Most of us know the Trent Tucker Rule and how you can't catch and shoot with less than .3 seconds on the clock. With .3 seconds though, you can get a shot off. This is a basic rule that most basketball fans are aware of. It's a shame that the head coach of the New York Knicks has no clue. This is what he said after tonight's game:

"Three-tenths of a second, all you can do is throw it to the hole and try to get somebody to tip it in. You can't catch and shoot, so we tried to do [a lob]," said coach Mike D'Antoni.

Really Mike?

If it didn’t work in Phoenix with Nash and Stoutamire... it’s just not a winning formula. It’s an entertaining formula, but not a winning one. - Derek Harper talking about D'Antoni's System

He could have been briefed on the exchanges Melo had with Effries or mentioned how wide open Melo was at the top of the key. If he was speaking on this of his own well he's loading the chambers, that's all.

I didn't realize he said that. Good Lord. So much wrong with that play. The Dynastic Fishlips Vessel inbounding? Why not Billups? Why isn't Shawne Williams in there? And like you said, why no shot attempt?

It's still kinda hard to realistically do.. Lob was probably the best chance..

picking Jared Jeffries to execute the game winning play was sheer brilliance on his part.

i'm actually shocked he didn't pull out his old standby of lobbing the ball to Bill Walker on the wrong side of the basket.

nope.

All those numbers live amid the millions of others in the NBA Register. But Trent Tucker’s true legacy is found on page 55 of the NBA Rule Book: Heading, “Comments on the Rules”, subhead, “Expiration of Time”:

“The game clock must show :00.3 or more in order for a player to secure possession of the ball on a rebound or throw-in to attempt a field goal... The only type of field goal which may be scored if the game clock is at :00.2 or :00.1 is a `tip-in’ or `high lob’.
“A tip-in is defined as any action in which the ball is deflected, not controlled, by a player and then enters the basket ring. This type of action shall be deemed legal if :00.1 or more remains in the period. A high lob is defined as a pass which is tipped by an offensive player while in mid-air, and if followed instantaneously by a field goal attempt.”

Either way it was a prayer if it went in and we shouldn't have been in that situation to begin with.

Holy crap, that was that long ago? Where does the time go?

Yea I would have thought everyone has ".03" engrained in their minds, and what the hell are you paying Melo for if not for that instance.

EDIT: yea, shouldn't have come down to it. But nice to see Knick fans rubbing MJ's nose in it in that vid.

Carmelo has a very quick release and he was wide open I was shaking my head , Chauncy should have been inbounding the ball.
No layups!

Exactly right..And the only reason Amar'e's 3 against the Celtics didn't count was because he took too long to get that shot off --what pissed me off that game against the Celtics was that after Pierce hit his shot, there was clearly more than .4 secs left on the clock. Amar'e's shot should've been with about .8, .9 left on the clock, not .4.

My guess is that when Melo suddenly sprung loose tonight top of the key, he wouldn't have taken nearly as long as Amar'e did to get a shot off, but who's to say? I'm no fan of Jared Jeffries AT ALL but to be fair (and I ripped him for it on the game thread which may not have been fair), when Melo was first wide open right at the 3 pt line, Jeffries was still looking down low to see if the play Mike drew up was gonna materialize or not---then it looked like Melo retreated even further back, now some 30-35' away, which would've made that shot next to impossible---for that to even have been close, Jeffries would've had to hit Melo right away at the top of the key the moment he popped open)...Guys said it on the game thread --- it shouldn't have come down to that anyway..

your right.

Isles welcome back. Just in time to comment on Melo barking at JJ after that play. It reminded me of when Marbury used to scowl at Nazr for not defending whoever he would let into the paint.

Its just like old times! Knicks stink, people here actually think the problem is with the coach and our newest "star" is looking toxic and his old team is doing nothing but win.

I think I am going to listen to "Im coming home" a few times

its .3 "offically"

Lets keep blaming the coach. Its his fault Tyler Handbrough scored 50+ on us last two games right?

Can we blame Karl for not teaching Melo how to play defense while we are at it?

In 2004 Derek Fisher hit a game winning jumper against the Spurs in the playoffs with .3 secs left
