Kevin Love will become a restricted free agent after next season, unless he signs an extension between July 1 and Oct. 31. Charley Walters of the Pioneer Press reports the Wolves don't want Love on the market in 2012 and plan to offer him a max contract.

Walters writes: "Love can look forward to a contract extension offer of five years in the $70 million range once a new NBA labor deal is reached, a little birdie says. The NBA's collective bargaining agreement expires June 30. Love, 22, can become a restricted free agent after next season. The Wolves have no intention of letting him get that far."

The new collective bargaining agreement, as Walters points out, will determine the length and amount that max contracts will be worth. There is a very good chance that the actual max offer will be less than the five-year, $70 million projection.

Either way, the Wolves will do whatever it takes to keep Love in Minnesota long-term.

Sucks to be a Minnesota fan. Kevin Love gets stats but they are still a lottery team.

Kevin Love is one of the best players in the NBA, who happens to play for one of the worst franchises. They had, what, one decent season when KG was there? He's a great three point shot and an elite rebounder... nice combo. Not to mention his outlet passing

He has been frequently injured and doesn't play defense.

Kevin Love is the best rebounder in the league since Ben Wallace, and he has the potential to be an elite offensive player too. I think based on what he's doing this year and his age, he almost has to be max (given the NBA payout system).

what is wrong with giving love the max? the guy isn't a goto scorer but he makes a great second option for a chamopionship team and the guy is easily the best rebounder in the league - it's not even close. does his defense leave something to be desired? yes, but he makes up for it tenfold on the offensive end. you put a defensive center next to him and you have a hell of a frontline.

he has a shot at the Rodman zone... Dude's getting 15 a game right now. Man, with his passing***, boarding and shooting would he look GOOD on our squad

He deserves it. He pads his stats sure... but he's a player

Love has shown he's a lot more valuable than Beasley and Beas has had a good year. I think this should tell the OP a lot since they have given Beas props beyond. If Love isn't worth Max then Beas isn't worth Travis OutLaw money.

Beasley isnt worth the max either. Im just saying Minny blowing the max on Kevin Love is pretty foolish. He is a great rebounder but he sacrifices defense to get those boards as well as takes rebounds from teammates.

Every player has flaws in their games. Blake Griffin doesn't play good defense either. I'm not saying Love doesn't need to address some things and maybe the Wolves should put something in his contract heavily incentive based concerning defense but he's as much worthy for Max as any recent rookie coming off their rookie scale contract. I said Beasley isn't worth $35mil not Max going by your criteria

Carmelo isn't worth $20mil plus multiple assets he doesn't play D and yet we're talking about a young player who's improving his game all around making far less.
