That's what Colin Cowherd just said about the Knicks on ESPN Radio just now... and I'm liable to to agree with him. If the Knicks has a quality defensive/rebounding big right now, we'd be well on our way to a Championship, I believe.

So with that said... of all the bigs who will be available this off-season. Who is the the #1 guy we need to get?

My pick is DeAndre Jordan...

IMHO, Knicks need at least 2 quality bigs to be really completive at the Elite level.

Turiaf a good second big off the bench at best.

QUALITY BIG... thats the key.

People here like to blame MDA for not playing centers more. That problem is our bigs are not good BB players. Turiaf is afraid to take a 10 foot jumper when he's wide open.

If I were Walsh I would hope Mosgov struggles in Denver and doesnt get off the bench. Then on draft day trade our pick, $3mm and the rights to Jerome Jordan for Mosgov. I think both teams make out good, we get a guy we like, fits great next to Amare and the coaching staff and players like and trust. Denver gets a pick, cash back and big prospect back. I think everyone is happy.

Mosgov/Amare/Melo is a very nice starting frontcourt.

we really don't have enough cap space to sign deandre jordan? is it that he will demand so much or that we won't have any space...

The problem is you can't just pick up any big....He needs to have some instincts, and ability to guard pick and rolls....I hate to admit it, but JJ is the best fit big man thats available.

He can guard all 5 positions better than the average big man....And this will help during those switches on pick and rolls....

JJ also has one great talent, and thats his defensive instincts....combine that with his long arms and lateral movement....It's pretty clear why likes him.

Grabbing any old big stiff will do nothing but get him a warm seat on the bench!

Unfortunately, Ronny Turiaf is brittle.

Jonas Valanciunas. Lithuania 6'11

Timofey Mozgov would be perfect.

you need a center who can rebound. anyone who rebounds well and has decent defensive instincts while being able to hit a 15 ft jumper...

tyson chandler would be a good fit but there's no way we can get him....

Barron is another big we need to pick up....from what I remember, he's coach-able, has legit center height (6'11), and can help spread the floor with his mid range jumper. I say release mason jr, and lets move on...These guys will be a major help come playoff time....

Just remember one thing...the bulls (championship years) didn't have an elite big....they had 4 rotational centers used to soak up fouls and take up space....We can follow that same philosophy.

Whoever the big is has to be able to score from the perimeter. We can't have three guys trying to score from the paint.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

If you remember, JJ developed a decent jumper, plus he moves around on offense...and Baron is a classic mid range jump shooter. But I agree, can't clog the middle like big Shaq would do...That will make both Amari and Melo into jump shooters.

Zach Randolph's contract expires this year. He can still put up big numbers and he was a good soldier the last time he was in NY. Randolph had nothing but nice things to say about his time here. If Zach would take a big pay cut to play here the Knicks would have someone to spell Stat or play along side of him at times. Bet Chancey would know how to make the most of his game.

He didn't turn out to be the black hole on offense that everyone thought he would be (including myself) he did a pretty good job of moving the ball around. We would still need another big who can defend and alter shots but Randolph's rebounding and scoring could be huge off the bench. Like I said he would have to agree take a pay cut to play for a contender but these new look Knicks might intrigue him.

He's not taking a pay cut...and he's not coming off the bench.

Plus, if he's not holding the ball, he's not as affective, in my opinion. Thats what gets him going, similar to Melo.

I doubt he would take a pay cut either but he can do things well without the ball like rebound.

Knicks have $36.7m committed between Stat and 'Melo.

Billups has a team option for $14.2m but can be declined at a buyout of $3.7m.

So they're at $50.9m with Billups, or $40.4M without him.

Bottom line is (look at the link) Knicks might would have a few dollars to spend IF they decline Billups option, but NONE if they exercise it.

So the question is, do you want to cut Billups loose for nothing on the chance you can both sign a RFA to an offer and AND their teams decline to match?

Give Shelden Williams an extended run just to see what we have first.

------------------

Go get me one of these guys WITHIN THE NEXT 24 HOURS:

Tier 1
Marcus Cousin
Troy Murphy (I'm not waiting on this guy though -- I'd come hard with the most money possible on a contract for the rest of the season PLUS a guarantee to start at center. Maybe even a guarantee to make next year's team if we can fit him in within the framework of what we plan to do for the future..I'd need an answer right away..Maybe the Heat/Celtics won't be willing to give him those guarantees..Make a top offer and ask for a decision -- it's not like he'd be coming to a terrible team too btw..The future's definitely a lot brighter here now -- if Troy doesn't want us, then I don't want him..I'm not wasting time with a bidding war..On to Plan B if that's the case.)
Earl Barron

Tier 2
Sean Williams
Dwayne Jones
Leon Powe if healthy (Amar'e would have to play 5)
Courtney Sims
Joe Alexander (Amar'e would have to play 5)
Vernon Goodridge (Amar'e at 5)

------------------

Realistic Draft Targets This Summer (BIGS):
Keith Benson
Jonas Valanciunas
Jordan Williams
Trey Thompkins
Kenny Faried
JaJuan Johnson
Marcus Morris
Markieff Morris
Rick Jackson

------------------

Intergrate Jerome Jordan into the mix even if he's still wet behind the ears..A fronline of Jerome Jordan/Amar'e/Melo is better than what we have right now and pretty damn solid looking on paper. I saw something written somewhere about a week ago saying the Knicks are confident they can reach a buyout agreement with Jordan's current European team to bring him over right now possibly).

And yes, I am interested in DeAndre Jordan if we can work something out..Doubtful the Clippers let him get away though. We won't have much cap room to sign him anyway but you definitely look into it. Maybe we can do some shuffling/juggling..

Time to go back to Russia!

This time for a guy with better hands and more awareness for rebounding.

Had enough Melo?
