You're not rubbing anything in my face. I'm a Knicks fan. Grow up.

We beat a team (by 6 points mind you) that is 22-35 with 8 road victories, has a center who is a shell of himself and a PF who is injured.

Yes, the team just got together- without a single practice, but folks my be a bit to giddy over this victory.

Arguments against the trade also centered about the longer term success of the franchise, with many believing that we would become an Atlanta Hawks type team- perpetual playoffs with no ultimate payoff.

Nothing taken from this game confirms anything about the trade's ultimate success or failure.

It was a bad trade. Melo rocks for sure, but this team has major flaws which may not be exposed by playing the Mighty Bucks. We'll win games like this which we would have won before. We'll be dangerous for any team to play against us. But you can't seriously expect a win over the Bucks at home to impress alot.

let me wave from the west coast tonight an 'lol' on this one...

one win don't mean a whole lot, but it certainly don't necessarily indicate it was a 'bad trade.'

anyway, i wasn't able to see the game (stuck in l.a. traffic) but the jury on this trade is not out yet, by any means.

i wouldn't call it a coup or a bad trade. i generally supported such a move all season, and the 'we got totally schooled by prokhorov' notion is a bit strong, since word is that the knicks may have not had the pieces to make such a deal with utah. in other words, if we wanted melo, who we could get, there was little chance we could get him for less than the max nets deal, because they had pieces folks liked more. we were always operating from a disadvantage, other than melo had us as his first choice (not the only choice).

You can lol all you want. I don't see why you would though. How a win would indicate it was a bad trade I don't understand...Even a loss tonight should not be taken heavily given the newness of the team. It was a bad trade on its own merits. We gave up the farm and didn't address our core weaknesses. We have a good team mind you. So it's absolutely retarded for people to make these kind of threads after wins against mediocre teams. Noone said we suddenly suck. To the contrary I think we added a few wins onto this season.

sc was making the thread, i am gathering, in general, because of the rampant raging about how bad the deal is from some fans from the moment it was made, and even before...

i mean, if before the end of last season started you said we'd have melo and amar'e and we had to give up the same pieces i don't believe so many of us would be mad.

anyway, this is never going to end for the time being...the disagreements about valuation of players we had vs. got.

i think gallo has been a disappointment this year. wilson improved, but ceiling limted. mozgov, possibly good, but no superstar. melo, not as bad as the advanced stats folks (who i am often highly supportive of, sometimes mistakenly so...read: zach randolph and his amazing outside shooting for a big man) have suggested is likely. (why so-called objective stats have to be taken into qualitative context, and some quant folks may be less impressed with).

anyway, we've been over some of the other points, wilson gone anyway if want melo as a fa, the cba paradox, not having the pieces the nets had so always at their mercy, melo wanting to be paid now, amar'e an injury risk/? mark in a few years with his knee, etc. etc. as why i supported a get melo now approach.

anyway, s'all good...this is our team 4 better of 4 worse...4 now...we'll see how it pans out...

For me the problem is, even if we DID improve the team (marginally), we are now locked into this team, with little upside, little to no draft picks, and much less salary flexibility. How are we going to make this into a championship contender?

The comparisons to Atlanta are appropriate... except Atlanta has a stud named Josh Smith who rebounds and blocks shots like a beast. We don't even have that.

Rose is not the answer.

I agree that the flexibility is limited, but if we don't trade for Carmelo, then we're still worse and there's not chance to get a perimeter star in the off-season, which the team would have needed. On top of that, New York didn't have a shot-blocker/rebounder before they made this deal and Carmelo and Billups are better than Felton and Gallinari by more than a marginal amount anyway. New York doesn't have a lot of salary flexibility, but they still have a 1st round pick next year to fill the void at backup PG or big man, and can find a vet or make a trade to fill the other spot.

As the game was finishing up last night I was thinking that the pre-trade Knicks would have lost it, what with Milwaukee shooting so many threes. Last night was a nice first game, and Knick fans can be especially thrilled about having a guy like Chauncey Billups at the helm.

The only real thing we lost in the trade was Timmy M. Shawne Williams can pick up some of Gallo's 3pt shooting. Melo can take over the driving role that Chandler and Gallo filled, and guys like Walker and Douglas can play a bigger role. This team went 12 deep, so losing Chandler and Gallo will not kill us. What we will miss is our 7 foot developing center. IMO that is the only thing we should not have given up. However, if Walsh signs Barron and he can play as well as he did last year, we should be okay. This team is definitely better than it was, and I think that is due primarily to Billups more than Melo. Billups is the type of heady floor general this team has needed for the past 10 years.

If we lost by 20 pts last nite you can't take anything away from that game.

It took 21 games for Felton and Amare to create chemestry and that was with the benefit of a full preseason together.

AMare looked like he did in those first games.

MDA when he got Shaq on the Suns had a hard time the rest of the season and they got bounced which lead to his exit.

For MDA haters out there Im sure your looking for a similar thing. Logic (not an MSG trait) would dictate MDA did have a winning record with his team this year (good record after 8-13) and the team came together. This is MDA's third roster overhaul in three years. He gets a pass for the rest of the season.

I'm just glad the Knicks won because it means Briggs wont make any "Doomsday" threads today.

(I'll be surprised if he even posts today)

I agree. MDA has not had any stability in his roster these past 3 years. The Godfather in each of the 3 years has executed a mass trade like the movie(mass hits). Anything we do this year is gravy. The true test will be next year when Donnie gets him more parts. We still need rebounding/defensive center. We might have a backup point in Anthony Carter so we just need to get a couple of big bodies here that can serve as Amare's bodyguard.
