Question on trade Exceptions, just heard chris sheridan saying that he thinks the knicks may have got a trade exception. He mentioned something along the lines that NY might be able to add another player around 11mil before the deadline for this year. Does anyone know exactly how that works?

Thanks
Mike

I was mistaken about this myself yesterday. Given the Knicks are taking back more salary than they are giving up (by a substantial margin) I don't see how this is possible.

DENVER will get the trade exception, from Minnesota, essentially for Curry.

would that depend on how the transaction went down? Or did this whole thing happen at once?

NY-Twolves first. Curry/AR/Brewer. NY Gets trade exception and is under cap.

NY-DEN second. the rest.

Trade the exception for Dalembert expiring contract in a year and a half ? That'd give us assets for an other big trade in 2012 or 2013. Otherwise, no way we get a 3rd star player.

it's because of the curry trade. we didn't take much salary back at all.

i forgot about that.

i expect us to use it in some form.

who are we gonna sign?

someone has to get cut from another team for us to use it, i think.

troy murphy? dalembert?

who else has a big deal ending this year that team's don't want.

yao? lol

Doesn't depend on the order of the transaction. Even if technically Minnesota sends the exception TO the Knicks for Curry, they then have to send it to Denver to take back Billups.

Minnesota is sending a exception to someone, that's for certain. But I don't see how it's possible the Knicks get it or get to keep it.

They'll be WELL over the cap with just the salaries they're taking on (somewhere close to $7m over the cap). I don't see how they could also get a trade exception too.

the trade exception HAS to be from the deal with the T'Wolves - all we took back was brewer and shipped off curry/ar. i wonder if any cash-strapped teams are lookign to dump players? i wonder if the clippers would accept a trade exception for kaman? or the kings for dalembert?

My take on what could have happened to make this work.

Curry trade with Minn nets them a trade exception and puts us under the cap. We use that cap space to complete the Billups/melo trade and take on more salary (due to our newfound cap space) and get a trade exception. Hard to tell without knowing how the trade went down.

This trade would be much easier to swallow if we got back both a pick and an exception. Trading it for Dalembert would be enormous.

I thought you had to use it in a trade.

you're right. but that just means we could use it in a deal for one of those players.

i guess, basically, we can trade guys who aren't worth as much $ for another player who is.

i guess we could use it for someone who makes too much $ for another team.

brandon roy? now that would be a layden/isiah move. oden?

rip hamilton? ugh.

how about nash? :)

No, the trade exception IS the cap space you created. They are technically one in the same. A trade exception is the mechanism created to allow teams to complete transaction.

A trade exception can't give you cap space, which you can then use and keep the exception. That is double-dipping.

I don't blame Sheriden for getting this wrong. I did too. The rules are hard to follow. But the Knicks CAN'T get a trade exception out of this. They are already taking back over $6m more than they are trading away.
