Fore! Knicks could be on 18th tee with 6-shot lead to win Carmelo
The news Saturday afternoon from Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov’s assistant that he has no plans to meet with Carmelo Anthony during All-Star Weekend can easily be perceived as great news for the Knicks.
So can the New York Times report that Anthony has told associates that he wouldn’t sign an extension with the Nets if the Nuggets traded him there.
Unless Denver has another team up its sleeve, it means the Knicks would essentially be bidding against themselves for Carmelo.
NBA TV is already reporting that, rather than Danilo Gallinari, the Nuggets may prefer rookies Landry Fields and Timofey Mozgov.
Believe Prokhorov (and, of course, he proved he wasn’t to be believed before when he “pulled out” of the Carmelo talks) and maybe the Knicks can tell the Nuggets, “You get Wilson Chandler, Eddy Curry’s contract, Raymond Felton and a number 1. And you’ll like it.”
Of course, they have to be diplomatic about this _ never exactly a strong suit at MSG. They can’t insult the Nuggets and make them walk away.
But unless Chicago, the Lakers or a rent-a-team jumps in the hunt with an offer that’ll pique the Nugs’ interest (and the Bulls have already suggested they’re not breaking up a good thing), the Knicks are on the final tee with a six-shot lead and only they can blow this.
Unless (and if you follow golf, you know the analogy) they turn into Jean van de Velde at the 1999 British Open
