Latest Carmelo Anthony trade buzz
February, 17, 2011 Feb 175:59PM ETEmail Print Comments2 By Marc Stein
Archive The latest tidbits to dribble onto our radar from the Carmelo Anthony trade front:

• Although details of a formally scheduled meeting have yet to emerge, Denver officials are operating under the assumption that Melo and Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov will finally meet face-to-face during All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles, according to sources close to the process. The Nuggets encourage that meeting, sources say, because trading with New Jersey has always been more favorable to Denver than dealing with New York and because the Nuggets -- who still like New Jersey’s Derrick Favors better than any player who’s been made available to them in the months-long Melo trade saga -- know that the Nets remain unwilling to participate in a trade unless Anthony also commits to an extension in New Jersey.

• Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni and Knicks president Donnie Walsh are understandably hesitant to give up too much of New York’s depth to get Melo, as Chris Sheridan spelled out Wednesday night in this piece, but one source well acquainted with both teams’ strategies echoes the rising notion that Walsh might have no choice if Knicks owner James Dolan takes a Melo-at-all-costs stance, as many observers anticipate. The source said: “Don’t forget Donnie is still trying to get a contract extension.” Translation: Getting Melo now, no matter what the cost, might be the clincher to get that extension.

• Entering All-Star Weekend, New York and New Jersey are the only two teams seriously engaged with the Nuggets in Melo talks. Sources say that the Dallas Mavericks, long considered right there with Houston at the top of the list of teams willing to gamble on trading for Anthony without his signature on a contract extension, have been sufficiently convinced that Melo is so determined to ultimately get to New York that they’ve decided there’s no way they could include prized young guard Roddy Beaubois in a trade with Denver because keeping Anthony beyond this season will be so difficult.

• The Nuggets, sources insist, were the ones who called the Nets to resuscitate dialogue between the teams for the first time since Prokhorov publicly pulled his team out of the running on Jan. 19. Word is that Prokhorov made it a condition not to re-engage Denver unless the Nuggets made the initial call

If DEN's gonna give the Nets permission to talk to Anthony face to face then I want the same courtesy..After all, we're all suitors for this guy, right? DEN giving permission to one team and not another wouldn't be acceptable to me if I'm NY and is probably not in their best interest when you get right down to it..We're gonna need to make that fact known right away..In fact if I'm Melo, I'd request (more like demand) to sit down with the Knicks. Denver's gonna try their hardest to engineer this deal with Jersey, we all know that, but Melo still holds most of the cards as has been the case all along.. If I'm Carmelo I go out of my way to say I want a meeting with NY too---let them say no..That should give him a clear indication that they're not willing to work with him on this, as if he didn't know that already..I'd love for everything to be handled on an even playing field..Probably won't be the case and it's gonna piss me off..You know what then? Don't come crawling to us when Melo refuses to sign an extension with Jersey and that deal goes nowhere for a second time...How 'bout that? I'd love for Donnie and STAT to sit down with this guy at some point this weekend and really get him in the proper NY state of mind.

I get the feeling the only thing we're really gonna have to worry about here is Mark Cuban...Something tells me this guy just might be crazy enough to trade for Anthony even if he refuses to sign an extension there..He really might wanna get him regardless, team him up with Dirk, make a run and then try and convince him to stay afterward..I mean if that happens, we're screwed..Just how crazy is Cuban? Can anyone see something like this??

That is an amazing deal for the Nuggets if it is being reported accurately.

And Melo would agree to this why? He can get the money in Denver and his situation (team) just became worse. Plus he will be going to ateam with no firts round picks left.

I don't think he should agree to it but I can see why Denver is pushing the Jersey angle again. Those players plus 4 first rounders and taking back some contracts?

As I state in the other thread, Hahn reports that Prok's spokesman said that "Nothings changed and the Nets are not back in the mix for Melo."

Melo agreed to speak with the Nets; that we know for sure.

The rookie GM is proving why he is a rookie. The guy has no concept of how to negotiate but oddly enough he may make out like a bandit. And that's becuase he is peddling his wares in a system that overvalues "stars" at the cost of everything else. Just look a the russian's despration for proof. This is a sytemic problem that runs across the NBA, and it never ceases to amaze me.

i keep saying New Jersey and Denver are both the most desperate teams in the room.

But I don't know that Melo will want to go to a dismantled Nets team with Brook "i can't rebound" Lopez and Chauncey "I'm old" Bllups and little else.

The Nets might still be a lottery team. Those picks would be really good. This offer if true is ridiculous.

I agree. The only guys on their roster that I like that would be left are Humphries, Lopez and Farmar as a back up. I don't know if that makes them better than any of the bottom six teams in the east.

Do they think that since that traded three 1st round draft picks for K-Mart that Melo is at least worth four? WTF

New Jersey Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov has not changed his mind about the franchise’s pursuit of Carmelo Anthony. The Russian told team executives last month to end drawn-out trade talks for the Denver Nuggets All-Star forward and nothing has changed with the NBA trading deadline a week away, his spokeswoman said Thursday.

There were reports on Wednesday that the Nets and Nuggets had renewed talks about a deal for Anthony. However, Prokhorov spokeswoman Ellen Pinchuk said in an e-mail that the billionaire maintains his stance, despite the reports.

“Mikhail has not changed his mind,” Pinchuk wrote.

When asked if that meant Prokhorov does not want the Nets to reopen talks with Denver at this point, the spokeswoman said:

“What I said is what I said,” she insisted. “Not what you said.” Via Tommy Dee and nba.com

Loading …Nets negotiating framework of ‘Melo deal

By Adrian Wojnarowski, Yahoo! Sports

tweet0EmailPrintThe Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets are once again in advanced talks on the framework of a blockbuster trade for Carmelo Anthony(notes). And once again, Anthony must be sold on agreeing to a three-year, $65 million contract extension to push these long, winding negotiations to completion.

More From Adrian WojnarowskiNets resume talks for Anthony Feb 16, 2011 Anthony distances himself from Nuggets Feb 16, 2011 The Nets and Nuggets are discussing a deal that would send Anthony, Chauncey Billups(notes), Melvin Ely(notes), Renaldo Balkman(notes) and Shelden Williams(notes) to the Nets for Derrick Favors(notes), Devin Harris(notes), Troy Murphy(notes), Ben Uzoh(notes) and four first-round draft picks, a league source with knowledge of the talks told Yahoo! Sports on Thursday night.

Now, the pressure could be back on the New York Knicks to sweeten their offer and get Anthony before the Feb. 24 trade deadline. Knicks president Donnie Walsh has seemed willing to let Anthony go into free agency, when New York can try to sign him in the summer. The Knicks and Nuggets have negotiated steadily in recent weeks, but Denver has been frustrated with New York’s reluctance to part with key young players in a deal.

For the Nets, the next step would be for owner Mikhail Prokhorov to meet Anthony in Los Angeles during All-Star weekend and sell the Nuggets star on a future with the Nets. It’s still unclear whether such a meeting would happen. Prokhorov has continued to publicly say he’s no longer interested in trying to acquire Anthony.

“Mikhail has not changed his mind,” Prokhorov’s assistant, Ellen Pinchuk, told the Associated Press Thursday.

Sources said Anthony’s agents didn’t even know until Tuesday or Wednesday that the Nuggets and Nets had restarted talks. The teams resumed negotiations over a week ago when Denver called back the Nets in the aftermath of Prokhorov’s abrupt ending of talks on Jan. 19.

This is still a steep price for the Nets to pay for Anthony, and far more than the Knicks seem willing to give up. Among the draft picks the Nets are expected to give the Nuggets are their own 2011 first-round selection, the 2011 first-round pick they acquired from the Los Angeles Lakers, a future conditional first-rounder from the Golden State Warriors and another future first-rounder.
