Utah Jazz coach Jerry Sloan is expected to hold a news conference on Thursday afternoon to discuss his future with the team, the Salt Lake Tribune reported, amid a separate media report that Sloan is about to announce his resignation.

Thought he said he just signed an extension for next year?

Man can always change his mind.

His assistant was going to get the gig when he left.

Times is a changing......

Shocking. Sounds like he either has irreconcilable differences with their GM..or maybe some kind of unforeseen health issue. Hopefully they hire Isiah Thomas to coach. Another reason for Deron Williams to walk away. Yesssss

Was just about to post this... an assistant is to follow him as well. This is nuts. Also good news. I want Jerry Sloan to coach the Knicks. I also think Deron Williams is the best PG in the league and would love to have him run the show in NY.

sounds like there was an incident. Two coaches are resigning over this. Sloan just signed a year extension too.

Why? I'd prefer Rick Adelman or Nate McMilan.

If Sloan has no health issues he will defenetally get one after coaching this Knicks.
It is hard to find players and owner so incompatible with what Sloan is.

Sloan might execute the best basketball program in the NBA. The Jazz seem to find some talent and Sloan seems to make it work. The Jazz don't exactly have the Knicks' resources, so I can only imagine what he could do here. He's a Hall of Fame coach whose teams do it all... helps that he's a PnR coach, so he won't drastically change the offense (just maybe get away from constant three point chucking) and focus on defense. He's a huge upgrade from but the team wouldn't have to blow all the coaching philosophy up if he goes. I don't think there's a better fit for this team out there, short of Coack K coming and bringing every Team USA free agent with him

From former editor of SLAM's twitter account:

RT @tribjazz: Everything from playing time, Sloan's system and rotations alienated key Jazz players, sources say.

From Kevin Pelton at Basketball Prospectus/ESPN:

Jerry Sloan is maybe the best coach in the NBA after Phil Jax. Only 1 losing season in his 23 with the Jazz is an unquestioned record of excellence.

I'd say Jackson and Popovich are the two best and Sloan is immediately behind. It's more like 1a, 1b, and 1c though

this "Sources say Sloan had lost team. One described situation as Deron Williams only staying if Sloan stepped down. " kind of ruins my theory that Williams will come ot the Knicks if Sloan does... seems crazy to me though. Maybe this is the Larry Brown thing where players hate him but then grow to respect and admire later on

I always knew Deron was a punk. Every pimple comes to the surface eventually.
