The Denver Nuggets have reportedly granted the New Jersey Nets permission to speak to All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony about recent trade proposalscarmelo-anthony and signing a contract extension. Posted by Ben Golliver.

NBA.com reports that the Denver Nuggets have taken an important step towards trading All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony, giving permission to the New Jersey Nets to speak directly with Anthony about the trade and about signing a three-year contract extension.

A league source said Sunday that the Denver Nuggets have granted the New Jersey Nets permission to speak directly with Carmelo Anthony about the proposed trade that would send Anthony to New Jersey, and about potentially signing the three-year extension that the Nets insist Anthony agree to before they agree to make the deal.

Under normal rules, direct contact with Anthony by Nets officials, up to and including majority owner Mikhail Prokhorov, would be tampering. But if Denver gives New Jersey permission to contact Anthony, the Nets can make their sales pitch to Anthony about their team without being subject to penalties.

This is an unusual move in the NBA, and it speaks to Anthony's unique strength in the long-running trade talks between the Nuggets and the Nets, which most recently included a three-team proposal that also involved the Detroit Pistons. Those talks slowed early last week when Anthony made statements to the effect that he didn't believe a trade was imminent.

The step is a very public sign from the Nuggets that they have not been able to convince Anthony to sign an extension that would keep him in Denver, which had long been assumed. It also appears to signal Anthony's continued reluctance to sign with New Jersey, as it has long been rumored that he wants to join the New York Knicks. Late last week, Anthony said in an interview that it would be his "ultimate dream" to return to play basketball in New York, the city in which he was born.

Now the heavy-duty sales pitch begins. Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov and GM Billy King are able to make their best case directly to Anthony without relying on media or agent intermediaries or worrying about being fined by the NBA league office for improper contact. And Yahoo! Sports reported Sunday that the Nets plan to meet Anthony "early in the week -- prior to Denver's next game on Wednesday."
New Jersey's pitch will likely include: using Anthony as the centerpiece of a team that will have cap space to attract additional top-end talent in the future, pairing him with promising big man Brook Lopez, moving the team to Brooklyn in the near future to achieve Anthony's goal of playing in front of a hometown crowd, and utilizing Prokhorov's vast fortune and international connections to turn Anthony into a truly global star. Also, rapper Jay-Z is a co-owner. He's pretty cool and appeals to everyone, including NBA All-Stars.

The Nets will also need to convince Anthony that he should be willing to endure a potentially tough stretch during the balance of the season, as the Nets have the second worst record in the Eastern Conference at 10-30, sport a roster that's short on talent and long on question marks, and will be sending a bunch of young talent and draft assets to the Nuggets in a deal that would land Anthony. Even if they landed Anthony tomorrow, it would be an uphill battle during the second half of the season to make the playoffs, even in the weaker Eastern Conference. Also, the Nets will also need to ensure Anthony is happy with new coach Avery Johnson, who is known for a demanding style.

These direct talks don't necessarily mean that a deal will get done, but it's a promising sign given that they come more than a month before the trade deadline. This development shows a professional commitment from all sides that hints that a trade will, eventually, take place.

this is how I am reading: Nuggets management have given up trying to convince Melo to sign extension so that 3-way Nets-Detroit-Nuggets trade can go down and have given permission for Nets to give it their best go.

Hold tight.

I'm thinking Melo has already told Denver management he won't sign an extension with the Nets.

My guess- This is a hail mary attempt; in order to get back the best possible package, by allowing the Nets to trying convincing him otherwise.

Once he shoots this down, we regain momentum.

that's how i read it too... Melo is obviously set on coming to the Knicks, so this is their last ditch effort to try & get this deal done w/NJ by letting NJ maybe offer him things on the side in terms of endorsement proposals & all the rest to put on their sales pitch to convince him to sign that extension.

now we'll really see if Melo REALLY wants to be a Knick or not...

From Nets Daily, this guy used to post on NJO forums all the time about 8 years ago but now writes for that site.

Shortly after 8 p.m. Sunday, David Aldridge told NBA TV's Vince Cellini that he had just been informed the Nuggets have given permission to the Nets to open negotiations on an extension with Carmelo Anthony. Aldridge, who said he believes the Nets have the best offer for the three-time All-Star, called the decision a "big plus" for the Nets in their attempt to get Melo.

"I was just told that the Nuggets have given the Nets permission to talk to Melo one on one," said Aldridge ".a big plus for them...Sources indicated last week that they believed the three-team deal would be consummated this week."

Adrian Wojnarowski added that the deal's "players mostly unchanged from original Denver-NJ-Detroit 3-way, but draft picks going to DEN for Melo still being worked out, sources tell Y." Still, Woj reported, "Nets elders, including Prokhorov and Jay-Z, working on meeting 'Melo early in week -- prior to Denver's next game on Wednesday, sources say." In Denver, Chris Tomasson tweeted Nuggets sources had told him nothing is "imminent."

The Nets needed the Nuggets permission to persuade Anthony to side the $64.47 million extension that would keep him in New Jersey (and Brooklyn) through 2015.

Very tough to predict. Melo could've definitely killed this a while ago but I'm sure in the long run it's in his best interest not to say no way to anything too far in advance.

My guess is that Denver has a good idea that he's not too hot on signing with NJ, but at least if he doesn't they can save face with the fan base and say they tried their best when they end up taking a lesser deal.

I don't think Melo is willing to wait 2 years to go to Brooklyn when he can play with STAT where he really want to be.

Melo wants to be traded to the Knicks, but he also wants to sign an extension now.... if he completely shuts the door on the Nets & the Knicks & Nuggets aren't able to work out a trade, that leaves him with the prospect of losing millions of dollars w/a new CBA... he said it's not about the money, but where he thinks he'll have the best chance to win a championship... we'll see if those are real or just empty words... Lebron, for as much of a douche as he was for going about it the way he did, at least he made the decision to go to the team where he thought he could win championships with & was willing to leave some money on the table to do it... let's see if Melo is willing to do the same.

This has been known for a couple of weeks now. And the conclusions were just as obvious then, but there's more to it. I generally like Carmelo, but all this latest talk doesn't mean anything.

If anything his latest quote about the ultimate being playing at home and specifically mentioning opening the Nets' new arena in Brooklyn...well that's far from subtle.

Too many conflicting stories. The Daily News reporting Denver has NOT given NJ permission to talk to Carmelo.

Melo's quotes seem to indicate Denver management is holding up potential deals not him. As I said before if he didnt want to go to NJ his agent could have EASILY made it crystal clear to NJ. Do people forget David Lee's agent killing a trade to Memphis?

Wow. NBATV just reported David Aldridge said that the Nets were planning to meet with Melo. I know Aldridge reported this earlier but they played an audio with DA right after showing highlights from the Spurs Nuggets game like it was breaking news. I don't blame melo for not wanting to go to NJ. He is better off in Denver and won't be hated because he went to a mediocre team.
