Magic Worried Howard Will Opt Out, Follow Other Stars

Feedback or Suggestions
Jan 16, 2011 10:51 AM EST
The Magic are concerned that Dwight Howard will opt out of his contract and follow the recent trend of stars aligning to form title contenders.

"At end of day, I think he wants to stay here and wants to win here," general manager Otis Smith told the Orlando Sentinel. "But with so many marquee guys moving, it's kind of hard for me not to have any angst about it.

"I'd be crazy if I didn't. Of course."

Orlando realizes that they could face a Carmelo Anthony situation if they aren't able to sign Howard to a contract extension before next season.

Howard has the ability to opt out of his deal after the 2011-12 season.

"I don't know what happens. My crystal ball is telling me Dwight wants to stay here," Smith said.

I tell you, I would not sleep on this. I think this has an inkling of truth and possibility to it. Pray for Orlando to suck as much as possible this year and next.

For some reason I don't think Amare and Howard would work well together. But yeah we need him and CP3 and then RayAllen for a two year rental.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

It will be interesting to see what happens to free agency when the next cba is negotiated. I can't imagine that the owners and Stern are ok with how things are going with the best players in the league. Maybe there will be a franchise tag or something to protect teams.

There was some article I read recently that said Donnie had already given up on Melo and his sights for 2012 were set on Dwight Howard, not Chris Paul.

I think Howard is a great fit for this team. He addresses there biggest needs, defense, rebounding and another post player. He's carried Orlando with only some nice complimentary players around him.

Dwight would be amazing. Probably our best option overall. Stoudemire and Howard would play fine together. Howard will anchor the defense and Stoudemire is still the first option on offense. His midrange game has developed so much that it will compliment Howard well, especially as he gets older and relies on it even more.

i would much rather have Dwight Howard than Melo, but who's to say Dwight even wants to leave Orlando? or even wants to come to the Knicks for that matter? & even if Dwight wanted to come here, do we have enough assets to offer Orlando in a trade to get him?

In this type of situation it wouldn't be so much which team had the assets but rather which team Howard would want to go to.

And Knicks got the Amare attraction and enough flexibility.

i guess i have a problem imagining that Dwight would rather go to a team where he has to share a frontcourt with another dominant frontcourt player like Amare over going someplace where he can share the court with an elite perimeter player... i would figure a bigman like him would prefer the latter... joining up with a team like the Thunder, for example, that already has 2 young studs in place to play with that can help spread the floor in Westbrook & Durant where he could step in & do his thing unhindered in the paint, & that would have some cheap young assets to offer up in return that can help Orlando rebuild with in Ibaka, Aldrich, Harden, Sefolosha, Maynor, White, Mullens, etc., as well as a talented up & coming player Jeff Green who has performed equal to the level that Gallo has in his time in the NBA... along with that i believe they own their own draft picks for the next 2 years as well.

when i think about who the Knicks would have to offer up a year down the road... Wilson C who is going to sign a lucrative extension this summer, Gallo who will be due for a lucrative extension next summer, AR who might not even be here anymore, Mozgov & Fields... plus the fact we play in the same conference as the Magic... i have to believe they would much rather deal w/a Western Conference team if things ever progressed to the point where they decided they had to trade their franchise guy... & when u factor in Wilson & Gallo's pending extensions, i don't think we have the flexibility you think we will next summer.

The man that wears a cape to an allstar dunk contest is not going to play in OKC. Dude wants a big market and to win. LA or NY IMHO.

IMO the Lakers would have a better shot at trading for Dwight than we do unless we have someone like Melo to offer up in a trade.

anyway, it's way premature to be talking about Dwight Howard trade scenarios when he hasn't even said he wants out.
