IMHO - Biggest need for this team if we continue to run the MDA offense...

... is a guy who can create his own shot from the wing.

that's how you score against a team like the lakers or the heat or the magic.

that's why Melo would be perfect here, but it seems the chances of him coming here are increasingly slim.

so what are the options for that type of player? because i feel like it's kind of a longshot that MDA will want to play a big center - even a deandre jordan type. it goes against all of his philosophies.

so, where does that leave us? what are the options?

here are a few, not in order of preference:

1) Acquire OJ Mayo - has not performed as well as people thought he could, but maybe a change of scenery and more structured offense that suits his skill set would benefit him. seems like he can create his own shot off the dribble, but can he learn to move the ball?

2) Develop Gallo - Gallo has shown flashes of being able to create his own shot. He's shown a better mix of drives and midrange jumpers to go with the long 3s this year... but can he become a legit second option?

3) Bring back Jamal - crazy, maybe, but he did thrive under MDA and is tailor made for this system. Free agent this summer, Atlanta seems on the downside, would he return to NY for less this summer?

what are the other options in this vein?

i'd still be completely in favor of acquiring a Deandre Jordan, Camby, Nene, Javale McGee type player this summer as well... but I'm wondering where the OTHER piece we all know we need comes from? I don't think it needs to be a superstar, it just needs to be a player who fits the team - a wing who can create his own shot alongside Ray and Amar'e.

One needs to be able to swing the ball and know a good shot from a bad one. Not sure where Jamal fits in there

have you seen him play in Atlanta?

and, okay, if Jamal isn't an option - who are the other ones? i'm having a real hard time thinking of anyone else.

personally i have my doubts that Jamal would be in DW's plans at all... personally i never got the sense that MDA much cared for Jamal's style of play for his system... he's too much of a freelancer & his shot selection has been very suspect over his career... MDA hates it when guys take bad shots in the flow of the offense... even tho i like Jamal's big shot making ability, my bet is MDA would much rather roll w/Fields at the SG position.

Iggy might make more sense because of his defensive skills & ability to create shots for his teammates, but you gotta figure we'd be looking at having to include Gallo or Fields in any trade for him... dunno if DW would do that.

Iggy makes zero sense as a guy who can create his own shot. Or create shots for others. He scores in transition and on horrible jumpers and we have plenty of guys who can do that for way less money.

he's averaging 5.5 assists this season.

okay - but i'm saying we need a guy who can create his own shot off the dribble when the defense collapses on amar'e and the outside shots aren't falling.

also, i don't trust stats as much when they come from guys on losing teams.

I've seen Iggy break his man down and get to the hole on many occasions. I just don't think he's the greatest guy for that tho. OJ Mayo is a very interesting guy tho. Outside of getting Melo, you really don't have many guys who specialize in creating their own shots. The way the offense is constructed you really don't want a lot of ISO stuff, except when it's absolutely necessary. So you don't want a guy that goes into that stuff every single time down. You want him to stay within the offense, but if it's needed, he can turn it on at anytime and get into the teeth of any defense. OJ Mayo seems like one of the few guys out there who could be available given how his team is using him right now.

exactly. they need a guy who can create his own shot if nothing else is working. but a guy who adheres to the ball movement our offense is built on in other scenarios.

i like Mayo for that.

it's a rare skill in the nba - lots of guys can hit open jumpers. a much smaller number can create their own shot against stiff defense.

i don't even know who else would be out there.

that stuff about Mayo getting into a fight with Tony Allen over a gambling debt raises some red flags with me... there has to be a reason why MEM has been trying to trade him for the past 2 years now... maybe there's some off the court issues to be concerned about... i'd sooner stay away from Mayo if this stuff is true:

We have a guy on our team name Shawn williams that had similar off court issue's, we employed a player that choked his coach, and thats just to name a couple of the many..

I thought chandler was developing into a nice wing man, both him and gallo.

I guess you want ready made

Mayo wouldn't be the alpha dog on this team, he'd fall in line behind Amar'e and Felton.

Also, from all the reports I read it sounded like Tony Allen threw most of the punches.

this article makes it seem like Mayo was antagonizing Tony Allen into this fight... i dunno what exactly happened just going off what i read... i never read anything negative about Tony Allen during his days in Boston other than the fact he was injury prone... during the postseason he was a very valuable role player for the Celtics... in contrast, the Grizzlies have been talking about trading OJ Mayo for the past 2 seasons & he's subsequently lost his starting job not due to physical injuries, but due to a lack of production... if there's anyone i'd give the benefit of the doubt to in this case, it would be Tony Allen until further information is brought to light

now i wouldn't mind getting Mayo if they're desperate to unload him for cheap, but no way do i think we should give up any of our top 3 young players to get him here... & if it were up to me i think i'd rather save AR to use in a trade to get us a starting C if possible rather than a 6th man scorer off the bench with baggage.

Yeah, Mayo is decent scorer at this point. But scoring isn't really a huge need for us at this point. I think our most immediate concern right now is a big man that feels comfortable using to soak up minutes. We need to find some ways to preserve Amar'e for the long haul. That guy can be a back-up big or a starting center, but we need to do something.

Mayo might have a rebirth being in a new environment with leaders and a winning mentality. It'd be worth a shot to see what he'd do in this offense. Sometimes guys just need to be in the right position and right team. This system rewards players with real NBA skills. Next to Melo he's at the top of my list of desirable guards that aren't loved by their current team. I don't know if Donnie is even thinking about Mayo, but he's the kind of player i'd be looking at.

A playmaking 2 guard would be almost unfair in this offense.

There are only a few out there who can make plays when asked and defend their position. You know all of them by their first names. Kobe, Dwyane, Tyreke.

There might be one 2 guard for every two teams that can make plays like that in general.

Crawford is one of them. I would like to have him back, but what's Atlanta's motivation since he's an expiring contract. He'd be a good get next year. He can't defend, but imagine him in place of TD. We'd score about 120 a game and he would demand attention in late game situations.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

I read that Mike is looking to try and play Timo again, cuz he feels that if he can get him right, that he'd be helpful by the playoffs. I really hope this kid can pull it together cuz we need someone to help out and he's got true C size. Donnie has to get rid of some of the dead weight and pick up some real help. You figure that he's gonna go for the Big man help if he can, but I wonder if he's thinking about a lowercase Melo. The SG with breakdown ability like Mayo off the bench would be very welcome, cuz I still feel we lose focus when Amar'e leaves the game. We have to have someone who can take over the scoring. Since it's unlikely we'll get Denver to deal Melo to us, then I think guys like Mayo or Jamal aren't totally out of the question.

MDA plans on playing a young kid to get him right? i thought it was up to Mozgov to get himself right & start playing the way MDA wants him to play before he should be given playing time? if he's gonna let Mozgov learn on the job, shouldn't he be doing the same for AR?

IMHO - Biggest need for this team if we continue to run the MDA offense...
