Popovich said "the Knicks are a good team, not a dangerous team, and there is a big difference." Mitch Lawrence seems to take that negatively, that Pop is saying we're still not there, that we're not strong enough yet.

But I understood it differently. Good teams are inherently dangerous, because if you're good it's dangerous to play you, I am in danger of losing to you because you are good. Being just a 'dangerous team' means, to me, that you can have a good game once in a while and have the potential of upsetting me, but you're not good enough to pose a constant threat.

Popovich was a little vague. How do you guys see it?

The Pop quote is at the bottom of this Abrams's article, http://www.nytimes.com/2011/01/05/sports/basketball/05knicks.html?partner=rssnyt&emc=rss

And Lawrence's stuff is here, http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/knicks/2011/01/05/2011-01-05_knicks_win_over_spurs_was_great_but_mike_dantonis_team_still_far_from_being_dang.html?r=sports%2Fbasketball%2Fknicks&utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+nydnrss%2Fsports%2Fbasketball%2Fknicks+%28Sports%2FBasketball%2FKnicks%29

Dangerous is a team that's not very good in the standings but could shock you.
Pop was saying the Knicks are better than that. They're beyond surprising people.

to me, pop meant it in a good way. the knicks last year under d'antoni were a "dangerous" team because of the style we played even though we sucked. now pop is saying we're a good team and that beating a team like the spurs shouldn't be all that much of a surprise.

That's what I'm saying. But Lawrence takes a different view on it. Interesting.

Mitch Lawrence got the intention wrong. Good > Dangerous to Pop.

i see it like this:

to refer to a team as dangerous in the context pop used it means that the team is not elite but can get lucky and win a few games on talent, shooting blitzes, etc.

a good team is just that. a cohesive unit that knows how to play a team game.

i believe the quote was a compliment to the knicks - my reasoning for that is that pop was nothing but complimentary to the effort the knicks put on them yesterday. nothing in his presser or persona would indicate it was a dig.

not sure what mitch lawrence was hearing/reading but what he said wasn't meant negatively and in the context of what everything Pop said about us it DEFINITELY isn't. Pop out of everyone we played this year really went out of his way to commend us not only on our play this game but so far this season.

Yeah Pop was paying some respect. He knows when he's looking at a good team and the way we played and have been playing has shown that despite our flaws, we can get it done. This is a tough part of our schedule and still even with injuries, we've managed to stay competitive. With very few exceptions this team has played consistently at this level and if anything the team is getting better.

Our execution was right on par with the Spurs and that's one reason that they had trouble with us. This system Mike has is a team oriented style of play and that makes it harder to stop than if we just relied on a star Guard or something. Sure we have to have a star player, but we don't get by only on that. The fact that Felton and Chandler have stepped up to another level may be a new development this season, but it's legit and gives us the ability to compete on a higher level. If Amar'e, Felton and Chandler can continue to lead the team and the rest of the players continue to fill in the gaps around them, who knows how this season may go. It's fun just watching and not really knowing what the ceiling is for this team.

If that doesn't put MDA's credibility in an envelope and stamps it, mails it to all of the coach's detractors, and they open it and read it and accept it as truth, then they are part of the blind, permanently unable to see.

A ringing endorsement of the entire Knicks team, players and coaches alike, from a living coaching legend, leader of the best team in the league, is no small matter. It is one of the highest compliments the current Knicks leadership has gotten since Donnie came to power.

The players have so adeptly put MDA's plans into practice that much props goes out to them, may they all some way be blessed with the NBA's awards and honors at season's end. And may Coach Mike receive the recognition he deserves for being the ideological leader of a resurgent Knicks team that's now only at the beginning of a potentially meteoric ascent to the elite echelon of the greatest basketball league in the solar system.

Pop and D'Antoni are great friends....

Pop has already said he is running 's system an O..... That's the ultimate sign of respect for another coach!!

He took his starters out with 3 minutes left and admitted defeat to us!!

Mitch is trying to find something that's not there!!

KNICKS on the way UP!!!

Pop is too much of a professional to have meant it negatively. What he had to have meant is a team that doesn't sneak up on you with an outstanding game but one you know is going to be tough and give you a tough game. No reason to think otherwise.

Actually listen to Pop, and he leaves very little doubt as to what he meant.

http://www.nba.com/video/games/knicks/2011/01/04/20110104_popovich_postgame.nba/index.html (Around 1:40)

"They're a very good basketball team. They're not a dangerous team, they're a GOOD team. And there's a big difference. A lot of teams, you know, they can be dangerous on a night, that sort of thing. But they're solid."

Meteors never ascend. They fall, crash and burn. Just sayin.
