Thinking about dropping cable TV completely and using NBA League Pass online to watch the Knicks. Anyone who has used this can you share your experiences? Many thanks.

i think if you are in the NY area, they block out the online feed for the Knicks, Andrew. I've wanted to do this for years, but since I live within MSG's radius I think they block it out.

Might be worth checking before you make the switch.

edit: If this is not the case can someone let me know and I will sign up IMMEDIATELY.

here's what i was going by for blackout rules:

What determines a broadband blackout?

A broadband blackout is determined by the zip code location associated with your Internet Service Providers (ISP) account. Our system uses this information to confirm your location and to restrict access to regionally televised and national televised games.

For example: If a customer lives in California and purchased his subscription there; then traveled to Michigan, he would be blacked out in Michigan.

We do not support the use of VPN (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vpn), internet accelerators (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_accelerator), or proxies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy_server). VPNs, internet accelerators or proxies make users look like they are in a different location than they actually are. Note that the google web accelerator (http://webaccelerator.google.com/) is an example of a service which will result in incorrect blackouts,

You can verify your IP location by going to www.ip2location.com. Your location is listed in the middle of the page. If your internet service provider is using a proxy server, you could show up as being in another location, which would cause you to be blacked out.

i even thought about having my parents in Georgia sign up for Broadband League Pass, but apparently they IP check you and if your current IP is in NY, you get blacked out. i guess you might be able to mask your IP somehow? is that possible?

Pick a non-NY US server.

Rose is not the answer.

How can I determine how extensive the blackout area is? I'm in upstate NY.

I'd contact your ISP. Ask them to be specific. Make sure they put this inquiry in your file so you have some proof that this was a concern if you decide to get it.

Basically, if they offer MSG on your cable package, you will be blacked out, in my experience.

Thanks, this looks like an interesting possibility. Is it legal?

I'm 90% sure that's the case. If they offer MSG as part of your standard cable package, you get blacked out of Knicks games because it's looked at as competing with MSG's right to be the sole broadcaster of the games.

Funny, I just got the following email:

NBA LEAGUE PASS
Watch your Favorite Team from ANYWHERE

Fine print:
Dependent on package selection. Local and national market blackout rules apply based on location.

Aren't most people's Favorite Team's in their "Local market"? WTF?

Most playoff games on TNT-TBS-Espn package.

I looked into sattilite that has MSG but they black out games. I get YES on my cable, but no Games. No nets, no Yanks.

Thinking is it competes with league pass. I wanted it for the high def. Nope.

Satilite may have Hi def League pass but I got too many trees on the property and ajoining park.

I've had pretty good luck with this site.

I have league pass- not bad, but so many games seem to be blacked out. I use atdhe for the Knicks unless I'm at the girlfriends' house.

You can use a proxy server to get around the IP restriction.

Had it during college a couple of years ago and wasn't too happy because for the longest time, couldn't watch Knicks even though I was in MA (credit card had NY address and games were blacked out).

Was fixed during the end of season though and was pretty awesome when it worked like it was supposed to. Moved back to NY since then and haven't tried it again so not sure if games would be blacked out. My guess is that you would have some problems trying to watch Knick games like some of the others said if you live in NY.
