Knicks' Fields, Clips' Griffin named Rookies of the Month

By Official Release
Posted Dec 1 2010 2:59PM

NEW YORK -- The New York Knicks' Landry Fields and the Los Angels Clippers' Blake Griffin today were named the Eastern and Western Conference T-Mobile Rookies of the Month, respectively, for games played from the start of the season (Oct. 26) through November.

Fields ranks fourth among rookies in scoring (10.8 ppg), second in rebounding (7.1 rpg), eighth in assists (1.6 apg) and second in field goal percentage (.544). He started all 19 games for the Knicks this season, leads all NBA guards in rebounds and is the only rookie in the top eight in scoring.

Griffin leads all rookies in scoring (20.2 ppg) and rebounding (11.6 rpg). He also ranks second in minutes per game (35.5 mpg), fourth in assists (2.6 apg) and third in field goal percentage (.520). On Nov. 20, Griffin scored 44 points, the most by a Clipper since Elton Brand scored that many in February, 2006. He also led the team with 15 rebounds and a season-high seven assists.

Here is a recap of the month for both Fields and Griffin:

LOVE That kid! Fields is just one of those guys that gets it done with no chest beating or fanfare. He's our new David Lee. Best thing is that he's doing it on D too.

he leads ALL guards in rebounding, and rebounding rate as well. All preseason we worried about this team's rebounding and Fields has basically fixed that problem.

This should really put him on the map... what a pickup in a player anyone could have had.

Walsh has made his draft mistakes but this is a coup.

Fields is a good rebounder because the dude is a converted PF, so his mentality has always been to go and get the rebound. What surprises me is that he can hold his own as a SG. Few players can transfer from being a PF to a SG, as most of them are too slow to make it work. Fields is just a unique talent in his understanding of his role and his own game and how he can help the team.

yea man... he played PF at school but what this tells you is his guy is a basketball player. One of the things I liked about the MDA Suns w/ Nash/Amare/Marion/Diaw/et all is they could all just play.

We shouldnt be suprised to see bigmen exibit fundamental BB skills like dribbling and shooting, yet we are.

This is what excites me about the Amare/Gallo/Fields/Chandler/AR/Turiaf/Mosgov group of non-PGs on our roster. They can all handle and do some simple BB stuff. Makes for good fastbreaks and ball movement. There is a reason we are #2 in the league in PPS

My favorite from the UK draft night thread:

AnubisADL wrote:
VDesai wrote:Talk about consistent- Fields lowest scoring game all year was 14 pts.

This guy isnt going to do a dam thing in the NBA. Why do people insist on talking themselves into hyping garbage picks.

These guys will not sniff the court.

I'm a lot older than many of you, and was not raised on internet access to the kind of info we can find almost instantly on the web. What I find amazing is that within the draft night thread I could go from wondering why we took Fields (and Rautins) when there were other players we might have chosen- thinking that we would could have gotten them after the draft, to actually deciding that he was worth taking a chance on based on everything I was able to read about him, or by him (his DraftExpress blog), during, or shortly after we picked him.

I also find it ironic to look at some of the guys who I and others wanted-

Hobson had major surgery (both hips, if I remember correctly)

Stephenson pushed a girl down the stairs and gets no play at all with the Pacers

Torrance had a major heart attack

Gallon couldn't even make his friend's team in Milwaukee

Varnado went to Italy to play ball.

Some who went after Fields have not played at all this season.

A great pick by Walsh and Co. of a good kid who deserves the recognition he is getting.

Well deserved ROM award for Landry.

One thing to keep an eye on however is his is 3pt shooting. 31% so far and 28% in November. He can stay at the 2 as long as he can guard which it has been passable if not solid so far. However his lack of range(in college, he wasn't that great from outside either) is a bit worrisome, if not expected and it's something he's going to need to improve upon.

If it never comes this season, especially against the better defensive teams, Amar'e is going to have a much harder time scoring.

It was clear that DW and MDA wanted High BB IQ and Team oriented players. That's what I said then and it's totally evident now. BB IQ along with talent is what Mike puts a premium on in his players. You can understand it when you see the BB IQ and high character of the players we have now and how it's translating on the court. Not all the players are high BB IQ guys but we have enough of them on the floor to improve the thinking level of the team. Mike said we weren't athletic enough nor big enough last year and now we've increase that dramatically. Fields plays his part as a big SG.

Just love how Fields is so cerebral about what he's doing out there. Can't imagine how he'll be down the line as he fully develops. I'd prefer to keep guys like him and look to improve without sending away good players like him.

This is becomes more magnified because Gallo has been so sporadic from the 3pt distance during our first 19 games.

nba.com's 'Rookie Ladder' lists Fields as the second best rookie in the league ahead of John Wall.

it should be fine if felton and Gallo can hit their shots. Fields by all accounts looks like he's a hard worker and should develop a shot over the offseason but the list of 2 guards who start in the NBA who shoot ~30% from 3 is very short and it's not a good list to be on.

i agree, DW deserves big props for finding this kid in the 2nd round... no one here ever even heard of the kid on draft night & he's turned out to be the steal of the draft by far.

I get the feeling that Field's assist numbers will improve.
