The only thing noteworthy in last night's 118-91 Sixers' victory over the depleted Knicks was Fields officially earning a rotation spot, Mike D'Antoni said after the game.
Fields, selected 39th in the second round and whom several teams did not view as "draftable," has earned his way into the top nine or 10 after another gritty 15-point, 6-of-12, three-rebound, three-assist performance.

"It means he's going to find some time," D'Antoni said. "I've got to find some time for him. He's played well. He's made the case."

With three starters out, Amar'e Stoudemire (resting), Danilo Gallinari (wrist) and Wilson Chandler (calf), the Knicks' blowout loss was meaningless except for Fields' showing.
"I heard that stuff [about possibly not being drafted] and you play with a chip on your shoulder," said the speedy Landry.

Fields' gain could be Anthony Randolph's loss. Randolph was put into the starting lineup and shot 2 of 8. Randolph's minutes could be slipping away, even if it's not politically correct with the Knicks looking to include him in a Carmelo Anthony trade.

"I didn't think he came out with any energy," D'Antoni said. "He's not that physically strong. I saw a weakness out there."

Now D'Antoni is telling the truth but that cant help Randolph's confidence.

Would he ever say this about Felton or Amar'e if they put up a dud performance or performances. Remember last year how he kept protecting Duhon chitty game after chitty game? Dude has more players to bounce off of this year and now can fully afford to firing shots without any concerns or repercussions. I can't wait until the day he's canned like some Pringles.

Probably not but Randolph has played like dog **** and he isn't a rookie. This is Randolph's 3rd year in the league and Fields decision making is superior to Randolph's.

I just dont want D'Antoni destroying Randolph's trade value like he did Hill's.

We cant afford to sit a 6-11 kid on this team. He's also done good things--he's got to step up. Roger mason's 16-20 minutes should be eradicated. Point blank we need Gallo and AR to step up their games--we need what they can bring.
MDA is terrible---it's not really a valid question--no defensive scheme and we know after two+ years he sits on 1-2 players. You know what--the old Knicks Checkettes and grunfeld wouldve had him out of here and Tom Tibadeu this offseason --thats when we were winners--when problems were identified and quickly changed. Id like to see Mark Jackson as coach

It's not Don Nelson or Mike D'Antoni's fault that Anthony Randolph has a terrible motor, takes horrible shots, doesn't rebound enough or block shots like he should. Randolph needs to play like a big man and not a freaking wannabe 6'11" guard.

Briggs: what do you think Jim Calhoun would have done to a guy that came out with no energy at uconn. No coach is going to let that go.

Dantoni has said a lot of great things about randolph and gallinari. He has also laid in to them when they have not put out maximum effort. He seems to call it the way he sees it and compliments when its due and calls oout lack of effort when its due. If he is the type of player that can only thrive when he hears good things and goes in the tank when he hears bad things then what is he going to do in the playoffa when the other team is talking trash to him after he makes a poor play? Go in the tank. If he's a true baller he takes the criticism and comes back tentimes as hard next game. If he goes in the tank because dantoni called him out then I will call it right now, he does not have the mental makeup to be a star

AR can't fall back on his fundamentals can he?

Rah rah feel good coaches can't sustain energy levels on players who don't have it. Maybe a few games, maybe in college were they only play 25 games.

YOung teams go thru this.

Pro coaches want pro players. Go in and do your job.

I remember JVG used to always make these little digs at players and the team in the media- nearly every day, but for some reason the players and the team would always respond to them and get better, or stop making the mistake he was getting at. For some reason, and I don't know whether it's just the current generation of players, or whether D'Antoni is just doing it badly, but his players have never responded to the criticism in a positive way- it just seems to p*** them off. I wish he'd realise this and stop doing it, because it's just not working.

I hope AR gets the message D'Antoni is trying to give him: play with more energy, strength and fire- thats what he needs to do, but I worry AR will just start to lose confidence and sulk. We really need him to turn it up come the actual season, and I'm still hoping its just the fact that it's pre-season thats to blame.

I doubt other GM's are reading blogs and forums to get info. They look at tape and see what they see.

Coach or GM quotes about players do litle to boost up or devalue a players value.

Here we go again, I got a bad feeling Randolph will be in the doghouse which is only going to hurt his trade value should we need to use him as trad bait.

I doubt that, he was in don nelson dog house and got traded with glowing reviews despite only playing 33 games..

he should play with a chip on his shoulders, not a brick

He is already there. He was the guy that had to endure D'Antoni's screaming fit in the first or second game. He is the guy getting blasted in the press. He is the perfect fit, young, talented, lacking some maturity, needing to be coached, mentored and taught. That hasn't happened so far in NY with D'Antoni.

Okay then the same can be said you can't build up any interest or trade value in Curry by big upping him in the papers?

I actually like MDA's candor at times, but this is a case where he should have used other words to express his concern.

Some players can take the criticism or doubts and use them as fuel, others don't react well and lose confidence. I think Randolph is in the second category.

I don't think he should have made the comments.

So a coach states the obvious and he is wrong?

was a pssy with his players last year and think it should only light a fire under
AR and Gallo's ass....

AR has been outplayed by Fields and that should not be happening....

AR missed a lot of time and has a new body so it will take time to adapt....

You can see he is a little slower and has yet to get his hops back but a little motivation
should be no big deal!!

Coach has the right to say his player needs to play better specially since its true!

This is actually a very good assessment. MDA is not showing good leadership skills or EQ in this case.

It's not as cut and dry as you make it out to be. That approach may work for some players and may not for others. The coach has to figure out who responds to what type of treatment and make sure he doesn't do anything that would cause more damage than good. AR's confidence is low right now and he needs encouragement and not open attacks on him right now. It's not so much what you say but how you say it that's being questioned.

Ok, some want a hard nosed no nonsense coach.

WHen MDA does that we don't like it cuz he undercuts trade value (like nobody scouts before a trade!!!!!)

Some want Buddy Mark Jax cuz his friendly TV manner would be effective warm and nice for the fragile "Camby" like athletic players.

Nellie was insane to have not played "KG2" but when MDA gets in his grill we are injurying AR?

Looks like the ship has sunk before it left the dock!

If Randolph thought Don Nelson was bad than what is D'Antoni?
