Im not going to cry--but there was concerning aspects of that game from coaching to shot selection PG play or lack there being physically manhandled by bigger players and spacing issues. While its nice that we played a JV team well---other than a quick start led by Wilson not missing--there were some scary signs. Cohesion will get better--but will everything else?

Berman needs to make sure his boyfriend Dinglebury looks better than Felton.

It's not Felton I'm worried about. Felton was fine and I loved how Douglas and Rautins played as well. These are the two things I am worried about:

1) Everyone has to make a better effort on the boards. Stoudemire needs to get his usual 9 to 10. Anthony Randolph needs to make an effort to get 8. Gallo and Chandler have to make better efforts. Mozgov has to get stronger. He gets boxed out VERY easily.

2) Gallo. Stop shooting so many damn 3s dammit! Why don't you have confidence in your ability to drive because you have all the ability in the world if you do it. Talent means nothing if you don't use it.

The defensive effort is there and it will get better. If those two things mentioned above don't improve though, then we might not be a winning team and the defensive effort will mean nothing. Gallo should be just as much of a go to scorer as Amar'e as well.

I remember when we signed allan Houston, Chris Childs and LJ and it took until the playoffs to 'gel' (ha, I remember all season long people talking about them needing time to 'gel')- this offseason has seen far more radical changes with no Patrick Ewing-Oakley-Starks core to anchor things, so I'm not suprised if we look bad for quite a while- Feltons hasn't played in this kind of system for 4 or 5 years, he's not going to adapt over night. AR, Turiaf and Azubuike haven't played properly in like almost a year- it's going to take them over a month (and thats being generous) to get it together.

The only thing worrying me is the rebounding- at least if we had that it would be easier to get over the turnovers and mistakes, thats what really helped the team in 97 while they were trying to figure things out (plus the defense)- it's a major, major problem. Amar'e has to make good on his claims and make the effort rebounding wise this year, and Anthony Randolph really needs to step up rebounding wise as soon as possible to give us a chance of making it this year, because outside of those two I we have no rebounders.

so true - it might take all season to get the chemistry right. we should still get enough wins to make the playoffs.

rebounding needs to be a team effort though - its the only way to run this offense (fast break) the right way.

Had enough Melo?

NYK3 - great thread.

The rush for grabby headlines is such that (cough) writers like Berman have devolved sports journalism into an abyss of false assumptions and third rate opinion.

Briggs - get real.

jazz74 - there is no problem if a negative statement has some grounding in facts or analytical thought. For example, if a player has a bad game, then put it into context and explain what may have caused it. Basketball is a team game. The parts rely upon each other to function as a cohesive whole. The idea that Ray Felton should be singled out under an amateurish headline says more about the half-assed effort that Berman puts into his writing.

Then again, it the New York Post.

Raptors 129, Suns 78
Associated Press

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Forward Linas Kleiza led all scorers with 20 points and the Toronto Raptors handled the Phoenix Suns 129-78 in an exhibition game on Wednesday night.

Kleiza added five rebounds and two steals. DeMar DeRozan scored 16 points, while Joey Dorsey added 13 points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

It was the first game of the exhibition for the Raptors, who wrapped up their six-day training camp in Vancouver before heading home to Toronto. Phoenix remained winless in the preseason.

Phoenix guard Steve Nash, a two-time league MVP from Victoria, British Columbia, was limited to nine points in just over two quarters.

The End Of Rupert Murdoch

Swishfm3 - according to Advertising Age the 79 year old Rupert Murdoch (Newscorp) is waging a war to get readers of online newspapers to pay up. The traffic at his two pay-walled newspapers in Europe - The Times and The Sunday Times - is way down. NewsCorp, which derives most of its revenue from its non-newspaper operations like 20th Century Fox (which distributed "Avatar") is fighting battles on several fronts. It's scandal-mongering newspapers like The News York Post are hemorrhaging money faster than you can say Neal Walk.

The hack writers will masquerade as new posters on sites like this or in an unemployment line near you.

Do Berman and his fellow panic merchants even understand why teams have summer league, then pick-up games, then training camp, then preseason, then the actual season with regular practice throughout the year? It's so players and teams can get better and improve their games- they work on this weird belief that the more you play and work on your game and the teams, the more you improve! It's not rocket science, it's not about excuses- it's a plain simple fact! His recent piece was the biggest load of ignorant c**p I've read in quite a while- does he think every team is at this stage (having played 1 or 2 pre-season games, half of which are against euro teams!)as good as it's going to get?! Should we cancel the rest of pre-season, heck why not even the regular season, and cut straight to the playoffs with teams assigned a spot based on their win/loss records so far?! Honestly- absolutely ridiculous- I can't believe someone gets paid money for writing such moronic pieces...
