My attempt to consolidate all things Melo into one flowing conversation to keep redundancy at a minimum.

Melo to NY all depends on Melo only signing an extension with us.

That lowers the price.

As far as trade proposals go, thats all I can see that matters.

Melo wants the extension, then he goes to the highest bidder. Melo wants to play in NYC, then with all dues repects to the Briggy, its Wilson, Eddy, A no. 2 pick and 3 mil cash or NOTHING.

Thats what Denver has to decide if Melo is serious. Less than fair value or Nothing. Melo wants to hang with the Russian, the price goes up. Melo wants to be with Amare, Denver gets a taste. Not much more.

I assume no team will trade for him until he signs the Denver extension? So he can't get traded, then back out of signing with the new team? Is that right?

If you are still following the team and reading sites like this, there is nothing, short of your own demise, that is going to throw you off this train.

supposedly from a "knicks official", denver turned down our offer and we have no chance of trading for Carmelo. So this is good news, lets hope he plays out this season and we get him in FA next summer

From today's New York Times:
The Denver Nuggets are lending an open ear to N.B.A. suitors clamoring for Carmelo Anthony, a potentially distressing development for the Knicks in their efforts to land the three-time All-Star.

In preliminary conversations, the Nuggets have told the Knicks that they do not possess the assets they are seeking if they decide to trade Anthony, according to a Knicks official. The official did not want to be identified because he was describing private conversations between the teams.

For the moment, the Knicks are left hoping that Anthony remains in Denver through this season, which would allow his contract to expire. If that happens, the Knicks could then pursue him in free agency with cap room that will be created by the departure of Eddy Curry.

That possibility would allow the Knicks to sign Anthony while retaining several key players: Danilo Gallinari, Wilson Chandler and Amar’e Stoudemire.

The Knicks can also hope that Anthony declines to sign an extension with any team to which he is traded. That, too, would allow him to become a free agent next summer and put the Knicks back in the mix.

But if Anthony is traded to another team and that team persuades him to sign an extension, the Knicks will be out of luck.

And in a twist that will make the Knicks and their fans even more frustrated, the Houston Rockets are one of the teams aggressively pursuing Anthony. The Rockets are doing it in part by offering at least one of the draft picks they acquired from the Knicks last February when, in a three-way trade that also involved the Sacramento Kings, the Knicks cleared Jared Jeffries’s salary off this year’s payroll and landed Tracy McGrady’s expiring contract.

The Rockets obtained the right to swap first-round picks with the Knicks in 2011 in the deal, which allows them to offer whichever pick is better to the Nuggets.

They can also offer the Nuggets the Knicks’ 2012 first-round choice, which they also obtained in the trade.

The picks give Houston flexibility in trade talks with Denver that the Knicks do not have. N.B.A. rules prohibit a team from trading first-round picks in consecutive years. So with their 2012 pick gone, the Knicks cannot trade their 2013 first-round pick as part of any deal for Anthony. That could be one reason Denver may be uninterested in what they can offer.

Denver is believed to be seeking a combination of draft picks, expiring contracts and young players with low salaries, according to ESPN.

The Nets have emerged as a front-runner if there is an Anthony trade, according to ESPN, which said they would be willing to trade Derrick Favors, the third pick in the June draft, a future first-round pick and the expiring contracts of Troy Murphy and Kris Humphries.

Houston, meanwhile, is prepared to offer a package centered on the shooting guard Kevin Martin and the Knicks’ draft picks, according to an N.B.A. executive who has had discussions with the Nuggets.

That executive, who does not work for the Knicks, said Anthony would prefer to go to New York, suggesting he might refuse to sign an extension with other teams. But the executive also said the Nets could be intriguing to Anthony because they are headed to Brooklyn.

The same executive said the Chicago Bulls had dropped out of the running for Anthony because they refused to include center Joakim Noah in a proposal.

I wish we could have a do-over on the Fishlips trade. Shyte be coming back to bite us in the ass?

Yeah in hindsight since we only signed one FA anyway and it appears we never had a real shot at Bosh or Lebron or Wade.

ah well. spilled milk right?

We have room to take on Melo next summer free and clear.

While Melo can be intrigued by Nets its:

Two years until brooklyn and Roster is weakend pretty good.

Force the issue of no extentions might yield less money if CBA goes down big (Unlikely) but he can reduce the price knicks have to pay or outright sign here next summer and move into a really good team.

Here he can have Amare in his prime and two yoots that will get better. IN Jersey he likley loses Favors upside and He gets Lopez as the his top wing man. With Knicks he plays with Amare. Hmmmmmm.

Melo is not going to forfeit tens of millions, but he might with a few.

Then blow the bank to get Chris Paul or Deron Williams if they so desire to bolt.

With a good team Knicks become a destination for end of career guys like Jason Kidd or others who want to win a ring and can accept the senior role player status coming off the bench. Nash will be one soon enough.

Not saviors, but role players who CRAVE gold.

If we build it they will come.

No melo if you have to pay retail for him.

from hoops hype an hour ago. Brussard Tweets:
Chris Broussard: Neither NJ or Den been told Melo will re-sign w/NJ. Until then, Melo-to-NJ all speculation. One exec told me Melo won't sign w/NJ. Twitter

Chris Broussard: Melo would re-sign w/NYK for sure. Twitter

Melo plays hardball and has buy in with some sacrifice to join knicks earns my respect. Lebron took less to join Miami. Melo runs risk of Denver not helping him and having to play with injury risk with no extension and lockout looming. If he wants to be here and willing to put at risk to get it, that earns my respect.

Here's some food for thought on the value of adding Melo:

Having Melo on the team is akin to throwing away possessions. He stole the ball and rebounded more than he fouled and turned it over, netting 2 possessions. But last season, for every 10 shots he made, he missed nearly 12. Teams get about 25% of the offensive rebounds. Thus Melo threw away about 9 possessions a game with his shooting, for a total of 7 possessions lost each game.

For comparison, Lebron James netted 4 more steals and rebounds than turnovers and fouls. He missed 10 shots for every 10 he made. Considering offensive rebounding, that’s only 7.5 possessions a game that are lost via shooting, with a total of 3.5 possessions lost per game.

Lebron loses 3.5 possessions fewer every game than Carmelo. For a team getting 1 point per possesssion (not that great of an offense), that’s 3.5 points on the scoreboard. That’s often the difference between a win and a loss. In fact, last year the Rockets averaged only .3 points less than their opponents. Throwing away 7 possessions does not help close that gap.

Here are the total possessions lost for a few other SFs:

Paul Pierce: 4.3 possessions lost

Gerald Wallace: actually gains his team 1.8 possessions

Andrew Iguodala: 2 possessions lost

The difference in efficiency matters. Carmelo is a great athlete, yes, but just because his game seems good and powerful doesn’t mean it is.
