Why--I don't know. I think that you go play competitive basketball and earn it--not have it given to you.

New York Knicks president of basketball operations Donnie Walsh announced Thursday that the team has signed guard Andy Rautins, the 38th overall selection in the 2010 NBA Draft, to a player contract.

Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Rautins, 6-4, 194-pounds, played four seasons at Syracuse University and averaged 12.1 points and 4.9 assists as a senior in 2009-10

briggs, i know you and i disagree on rautins, but i have to think that if the team was absolutely unimpressed with rautins they wouldn't have signed him. i agree with you - he played horrible in summer league, but maybe they were asking him to work on certain things which led to his poor performance. obviously i don't know that, but i'm just sayin...

not fair... guy is a hard worker and was a good college player. They picked him because they liked him. He deserves more than 5 SL games before he gets bounced from the league

Obviously someone in the organization likes his play...I agree some what with KYK comments, they probably asked him to some certain task during summer leage that made him think more...I believe TD after the first game was instructed as well but thats one reason they have summer league and pre season and yes PRACTICE! We just have to wait for the drama to playout :)

He shouldn't have been picked at 38 and they should have at least waited to see if he had anything in training camp before committing to him. The Knicks are making news for all the wrong reasons lately.

Yes--no problem if he earns it in training camp playing against NBA players in preseason games or practice. Perhaps they did it to relax him--I just think he is more of a European type prospect than NBA and he had Demar Derozan footprint on his face to prove it:)

You have to go on your gut sometimes with certain players. Guys like Rautins may not look great in a free wheeling pick up game styled SL game. I think it's fair to give him a chance to work in Training camp with the Varsity and see how he does.

That is what this signing reminds me of. I am fearful that someone will blow away the pack in training camp but not be able to be signed because the Knicks have committed to Rautins.

right, sorry should have clarified it... i don't think he ever made the roster either... so i guess he wasn't signed after SL? shame, would've liked to see him get a shot w/this team.

would be nice but dunno how much playing time he'd be able to get in Orlando playing behind Rashard, Vince, Pietrus & Ryan Anderson... maybe Houston could use an athletic wing player now that they traded Ariza away... Battier won't be there much longer & he could be a decent backup for Chase.

I take it as a sign of significant progress for the Knicks roster when the vitriol is focused on the #38 pick with a non-guaranteed contract and what other scrub he will gain a spot over.........vs in previous years when the focus was on how bad the Knicks Lottery Draft Pick was.
