Knicks make offer to Lakers' Brown
Posted on: July 29, 2010 3:36 pmScore: 186Log-in to rate:Log-in to rate: Log-in to rate: The Knicks have extended an offer to Shannon Brown and are waiting to hear whether the Lakers' free-agent guard will take it or wait for L.A. to make room to re-sign him by trading Sasha Vujacic, two people with knowledge of the situation told CBSSports.com Thursday.

Brown, 24, played all 82 games for the champion Lakers last season and is weighing whether to join Ray Felton in the Knicks' revamped backcourt or give the Lakers time to clear the room needed to re-sign him. The Lakers didn't give all of their mid-level exception to point guard Steve Blake, so some of it is left for Brown. But that's not really the issue. The Lakers, as usual, are well into the luxury tax. So moving Vujacic's $5.4 million salary for next season would ease the tax hit associated with keeping Brown.

Brown's electrifying transition game would be a huge asset in coach Mike D'Antoni's up-tempo system, and Brown would have a good chance of winning a starting job after starting only seven games for the Lakers last season.

Meanwhile, the Knicks continue to explore trade possibilities and remain interested in Blazers swingman Rudy Fernandez, who is actively being shopped. In their pursuit of a deal for Fernandez, or perhaps Chris Paul if and when the Hornets begin fielding serious trade inquiries, the Knicks have a few more assets to offer than commonly realized. According to two people familiar with how the David Lee sign-and-trade arrangement was structured, the Knicks do not have to wait the standard 60 days before combining Ronny Turiaf, Anthony Randolph or Kelenna Azubuike with other players in a trade. The Knicks were still under the salary cap when Lee was signed and traded, exempting them from the 60-day waiting period, which applies only to players acquired with a trade exception by teams that are over the cap.

agree - wish we could have pursued Anthony Morrow. Or even CJ Watson.

weird move.

i take it this means we're out of the Rudy Fernandez sweepstakes?

also, this part of the article deserves to be highlighted:

Other than the playoffs I have not watched a lot of Brown. He does put up good numbers when he gets minutes.

Depends on the deal.

If its a 1 year deal, then why not. He is an athletic 2 who is a decent 3 pt shooter (30% about).

More interestingly the article says that we don't have to wait 60 days to trade the returns of the Lee trade.

A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

do you understand the implications of having room for a max contract next year versus signing Morrow?

Morrow and CJ Watson both signed for about 4 million a year (Watson possibly closer to 3). Brown will likely be signed for much less.

Shannon Brown doesn't seem to have a good jumper. Bill Walker does. I don't understand this offer unless we are moving Walker and some others in a bigger trade.

Walker and Azebuke are both injury prone / question marks. Brown would be a good depth signing. If he is stuck behind healthy Walker and Azebuke and the contract is a good one, we can always trade him for a pick by the the deadline.
A glimmer of hope maybe?!?

Shannon Brown is GARBAGE. Why sign Amare? We could have had space for 2 max deals next year.

It's an exciting move. This is what I was looking for--a quality bench enhancement--they certainly are trying to put together an exciting teams for the fans. I really hope they get Brown and I give the Knicks management a lot of credit.

Hopefully we can get Amare and Felton to talk to him--we haev that credibility now. I think that if he does play for the Knicks--his future earnings potential could go much farther than going back to the Lakers.

Im not sold on the Turiaff starter gig. I wonder if he gets re-routed. And 2 other things If Azubike is healthy and 95% of what he was--hes easily over both Douglas and Walker--not even questioned. Also I think it would behoove us to go even 9-10 deep. I think we have the cogs to do it and I think it's a strategy that would really help the team long term to prevent injuries--one of the things w e have is depth and we should use it.

yup. even if it's for 1 year. Don't know why he would want to sit behind Kobe, Derek, Blake, Barnes.

Yeah martin--they signed right over his head. I think we have atleast 3mm to give out and maybe we can do 2/3 years with the team option like we did with Mozgov
