It should have raised a few eyebrows when Amare Stoudemire tweeted a couple days ago that he was headed to Israel to "learn about it." Sure, Stoudemire's free to do whatever he wants on his own time, but Israel? Seems kind of random.

Unless ... it wasn't so random after all. Apparently, Stoudemire just learned that his mom is Jewish.

According to an Army Radio report, Stoudemire plans to spend time in Israel learning Hebrew, having recently learned he has a Jewish mother.

(It's worth noting that this is Amare's mom).


According to Jewish law, if your mother is Jewish, then you, by definition are also Jewish. Therefore, if true, Amare Stoudemire is ... well, I don't even need to say it, because you know. As a fellow member of the tribe, let me be the first to welcome Amare into our little club. Jordan Farmar and Omri Casspi say hello.

But wait, it gets better.

Star-divide

Not content with him being a member of the tribe, Israeli newspaper Ha'Aretz (which is normally the least tabloid-y paper in the Israeli press) is pushing for Amare to join the Israeli national team.

News of Stoudemire's trip quickly had Israeli basketball fans buzzing with speculation that they might one day see him playing alongside another Jewish NBA star, Israel's Omri Caspi, on the national team.

So far there is no indication as to whether Stoudemire is here to stay - although for the moment, Israel seems to be getting along just fine without him, beating Great Britain 86-82 in Tueday's training game.

Well that pretty much answers the question right there. Why even bother trying to get Amare to play for your team when you can beat Great Britain in a training game without him?


As a fellow Jew I have to say its pretty cool to hear he's a Knick the garden always has Jewish people there remember being there on Jewish night and they were playing the kings we lost but the ovation Caspi got was crazy .... the whole national team just sounds crazy.

Heard that Bosh and LeBron would not convert in order to be part of the "community," and that is why they couldn't work out an agreement with the Knicks.

it is a bit more complicated than this, because according to more strict versions of judaism (i.e. orthodox) female converts to less strict versions of judaism (i.e. reform), and her children will not be considered to be jewish.

My sister had to do some kind of conversion (Reformed, I think) in order to marry her husband so their kids could be "Jewish," and my nephew, who is a bit crazy, is now in Israel doing duty on a kibbutz in order to serve in the Israeli army. They had to go through a lot of stuff to get him qualified including a Hebrew language test.

So TELL Me Mary the mother of Jesus was in the davadic family line and that's how Jesus was Jewish, we all know her husband Joseph wasn't Jesus biological father. hmmm

The only thing I cannot get why this has any relevance to bbal and anything for this matter.

I was in Israel a lot and black Jews are a big group of population.
To be Jewish has nothing to do with color, fate, or national descent.
It is belonginess to great 4000+ years culture of winning all battles at the end without violence.

You won't be saying this when Amare refuses to play on the sabbath or one of the important Jewish holidays. The Knicks are also going to have a post-game Kosher spread for him in the MSG dressing room.
