best owner in all sports. I know he was a mental case in the 70s and 80s but I wouldnt trade him for any owner in pro sports.

As a Yankees fan, I loved George. Most other fans hated him because he was willing to spend to make a champion. As a YAnkees fan, that's the most you can ask for in an owner

Bob Sheppard and Steinbrenner in the same week is tough. Yanks lost a huge part of their history/culture.

yea really. Kind of the ying and yang of Yankee karma. Soft spoken gentile voice of the stadium and the owner who said phuck everyone, we are doing it my way and we are gonna win.

Im bummed. He was definitely the owner who was most concerned with winning in all of sports. For his eccentricities, a true NY Icon.

BEING A YANKEE FAN ALL OF MY LIFE , growing up not far from the stadium, I will tell you that george has been as big of a figure as any yankee player. From reggie, to jeter, to dave winfield. He will surely be missed. Outspoken , he had no problem telling you what was on his mind. what I love about george is that he did whatever it took to field a winner, and was as passionate about the sport and his team as us fans were. I bought into that passion and so did many other.. george changed the landscape of baseball in the American league... He made the American league the premier league in baseball if you ask me..

RIP george, we will miss you...

RIP George Steinbrenner. Thanks for everything. I'm glad he got to see that one last championship before he left us.

Very sad day.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

first the Voice of the Yankees, now the Boss of the Yankees... what a sad week.

Rest In Peace George... you were the best owner any Yankee fan could ever ask for.

This is too soon and very sad. I actually happened to admire the guy. Yet, whether you hated the guy or loved him, he was brilliant at what he did as an owner and a business man, and we can all learn something from him.

RIP George Steinbrenner.

my sentiments exactly. this is horrible news, george steinbrenner is the best owner in sports history and today is a very sad day.. he just turned 80 on the 4th of july. i know his family has been running things the last 2 years, but the yankees will NEVER be the same with him no longer around.

RIP to one of baseball's all-time greats.

he turned a $10 million dollar investment into a $2 billion dollar conglomerate & 7 world championships... dude deserves nothing but respect... most of the same people that booed this man know now he was always pushing for this franchise to succeed & have nothing but adoration for him for dedicating his life to bringing championships to our city... if there's an hour long special that deserves to be aired, it's 1 in honor of the greatest owner sports has ever known.

after 81, it was some bad times. had mlb probably not banned him, i always wondered if they woulda got it right cuz he was doing more harm then good to the product on the field. that last suspension probably was one of the best things to happen to him and the team.

the $$$ aspect is lost on most fans... most recall the winning above all else, and perhaps thats what it should be.

i agree, the winning should take precedence, but you don't create that kinda sports dynasty out of such a small comparative investment by accident... the man was a great business man & he put winning above all else... he deserves nothing but respect... even some of the tough years in the mid 80s & early 90s, he still spent the money to try & field the best team he could... & while you make a good point about maybe his temporary banishment being the best thing that may have happened to this franchise since he took over, the man still was responsible for landing some big fish that were key components of some championship winning ballclubs... we don't win 7 championships without George Steinbrenner, bottomline.
