Before the big news tomorrow (tonight), wanted to get it on the record that no matter what happens, Donnie Walsh has done well in putting the franchise back on the road to respectability. He deserves our props - in two years he's done a lot:

  • Defined a plan that gives us the best chance/quickest route back to a championship, and through the years stuck to it
  • Moved three contracts thought unmoveable - Crawful, Randolph, and Jeffries
  • On this last one, had the foresight to realize that to be a player this year, two max slots was absolutely necessary. We wouldn't be in the conversation with just one slot. And Donnie deserves props for realizing this.
  • Drafted pretty well, esp Gallo and TD
  • Conducted Knicks business like a professional, helping rid the place of Isiah's stench

Kudos, no matter what happens with Lebron.

The new new core: Randle, RJ, IQ. Maybe Mitch. Future pick. Future trade. Future FA.

agreed. i was going to make a very similar thread.

i thought the amare signing was genius and really put us back in consideration. donnie has handled this whole thing with a lot of class and smarts.

the only complaint anyone could have is the draft in 2009. other than that, walsh has been top notch.

donnie has us in the top three for lebron up to the last minute. can't complain. the rest is up to lebron.

Been giving him props for a two years now, while oter teams are overpaying for Boozer and considering overpaying for Lee in last minute decisions to woo Lebron. Walsh never even left the wheelchair, due was ahead of the game all the way.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

agreed... i wanna see results... whether he gets Lebron or not, his mission is to get this team back to contention this year... that means there needs to be more moves made other than just Amare to get us there... if he's unable to land the biggest prize, i'm not gonna curse him as long as he makes other impactful moves to get this team back to contention in 2010... & when i say contention, i'm not talking about a 40 win roster that's just able to sneak into the playoffs as a #8 seed... i'm talking about top 5 seed at the very least... i think we've been waiting long enough & we've sacrificed enough assets to expect some real results this year... no more "next year"... it's put up or shut up time for this franchise.

So if Lebron signs elsewhere, you still expect us to gather enough talent to finish top 5 in a much tougher Eastern Conference?

Boston
Orlando
Miami
Chicago
Atlanta
Milwaukee

I dont see it. Even with Amare, those teams are more complet than we are and have played together longer. If we can pull the Randolph trade from GS, thats give us a really good young prospect at the PF position moving forward, at a good price.

we should be able to beat out Atlanta or Milwaukee with the right moves this summer... don't give me this stuff that Milwaukee is too tough to compete with, the Knicks this past season had every bit as much talent as they had... we have Amare, that's 1 important piece... if that's the only impactful player we get out of this summer, then i'm gonna be hugely disappointed... i'm sorry but if you're happy with just Amare & a buncha role players, then knock urself out.

Worst thing would be to overpay and sign longterm deals to achieve a 5 seed.

Sign a one year deal with a few guys and try to make the playoffs, then attempt FA again next year.

Jeff Green, Marc Gasol (rfa), Aaron Brooks (rfa), Douglas-Roberts (rfa)

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

i think they'll bank curry's contract for cap room and a run at tony parker or melo in 2011.

Never said I'll be happy, just being realistic. If we dont get Lebron, then what do you suppose we do? Everyone has their hopes up at this point and we'll all be hugely disappointed after being in it right up to the bizzer. But if we miss out, we cant get the draft picks so we have to move forward and use the cap-space wisely and try and improve the team. Not saying the Bucks are to tough, but realistically, Amare is the best player on both teams but after that Milwaukee certainly has the next 2 best players possibly 3.

i've said all along i don't wanna sacrifice longterm contracts on 3rd tier guys... if we miss out on Lebron i expect Donnie to pull of a sign & trade to land us another impact player we need to get this team to contention... a Tony Parker, even a Monta Ellis & Randolph swap would be fine by me... i never said to fill up the roster with guys like Ray Felton or Luke Ridnour.

The course was the right one when you consider what was at stake and in the end the risk wasn't that big. We sucked and the cap space pretty much assured we could improve the team and already you can see the many ways DW has to do that.

depending on who we get this summer that could quickly change... just because we miss out on Lebron (if that happens) it doesn't mean Donnie's off the hook in terms of looking to make other moves to improve this roster... his job is halfway finished... he landed us 1 bigname guy to build around... now it's time to land the second.

I'd rather his job be half finished this summer rather than overpay for 2nd and 3rd tier guys who will deplete our funds leaving us out of the running for possibly signing a max deal next summer. If San An and or Denver dont bite on trades this summer, I'll wait it out until the trade deadline and even into next summer. Why does the second player absolutely have to be this summer? I know what Walsh said, but things change. Plans change. I just wouldn't want him to pull a trade just for the sake of pulling a trade for the summer of 10. If he sees somehting better in '11, then I have no problem picking up a Randolph this summer and going hard after Melo or Parker next yr.

Donnie was right in saying that managing the cap is gonna be huge. We will have other opportunities to improve over the next season. He'll look to make smart moves like the Lee/AR trade.

you can still go hard after Melo or Parker next year as long as Curry's contract isn't used in any sign & trades now... that gives us at least $11M in cap space in 2011... 1 other trade to free up $5M & you have your cap space to land that other big fish in free agency... Wilson Chandler is more cap fodder that can be unloaded for extra cap space... i'm talking about using the cap space left over (we still have $20M in cap space right now) &/or a possible D Lee sign & trade to land that other player this summer.
