The Miami Heat have discussed a deal with the Dallas Mavericks to acquire big man Brendan Haywood, the Miami Herald reported, citing a player and a separate agent who have been directly involved in those discussions.

Miami would part with Heat free agent center Jermaine O'Neal or Michael Beasley — or both. The Heat has met with Mavericks free agent center Haywood already. It also has talked with the Utah Jazz and power forward Carlos Boozer.

It's possible the Heat would also seek a backup point guard from Dallas, with Rodrigue Beaubois and J.J. Barea both playing behind Jason Kidd.

Any potential sign-and-trade with Utah would certainly center on a O'Neal-for-Boozer swap, with free agent Jazz swingman Kyle Korver also a possible Heat target.

This is the long and the short of living and dieing by the draft: sometimes at pick #2 you get Durant and sometimes you get a player who is in discussion to be traded for Brendan Haywood.

Beasley has a lot of talent. I am not sure why the Heat are so quick to try and move him. He has had his struggles but for what it is worth his dad came out and said the Heat will regret letting him go. I think a dad should say that but I am surprised the Heat are so ready to move on already.

I am never good on the intricacies of contracts, caps, trades, free agency, etc, so could anyone tell me why can't Dallas just sign O'Neal if he is a FA? Why does Miami have to get involved?

because they're waaaaay over the cap. this trade prevents them from having to use their MLE. and it allows them to get some value for letting haywood walk.

i have no idea why dallas would want JO though. they're becoming a repository for all-stars past their prime. like an all-star old folks home.

And to think how close he was to being the #1 pick in the draft.

We have had fights around here regarding B. Lopez and Gallo, and whether we made a mistake on the pick, but the one team that really could have used a good center at the time was Miami. Lopez would have been a nice guy for Wade to play with. They would have also been better off taking Love or Gallinari, and think about a backcourt of Wade and Westbrook.

Beasley's case is a wakeup call for everyone who dismisses the character issue as irrelevant when looking at who to draft. If a team with a leader like Wade can't straighten Beasley out, who can?

I'll pat myself on the back... I got into some epic debates with folks around here as to why there was no way I would take him #1 over Rose and why Beasley was likely going to be a disappointment at the pros

Besides the character warnings (Remember the pot incident at rookie orientation? I think Beasley got away with that one.)I had my doubts about him when I realized that he was about 6'7" without shoes, and that he would never be a true PF in the NBA.

Very talented, and I think he can still make a name for himself as an offensive player, but what a waste of a pick.

Carmelo Anthony was caught with pot too and used to be the league young whipping boy.

Beasley has talent but that is Wade's team and he isnt be allowed to develop and make mistakes. If Miami was stupid enough to trade him to us for Chandler then I'd do it.

Community pick turned into a bust.

If you average 15 and 6 in Miami you are rumored to be traded for Haywood. If you average 15 and 5 in NY you are the guy that is going to be traded for Carmelo Anthony.

Cold. But, apples and oranges. Nice try.

Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

I have watched some Heat games where Beasley has been impressive. I don't see him as a throw away player. Maybe there is more to his problems that only his coach and teammates know about. If not I don't think you can discount what he has done just because you like a guy on the Knicks.

He is Delonte like. Lots of talent, but low in the "think tank".

Miami could have traded the pick but there was not much value in doing so.
