Joe Johnson has agreed to terms with the Hawks on a maximum-salary contract.

Johnson had reportedly been hesitant to accept Atlanta's offer and the Knicks were one team that unsuccessfully tried to change his mind.

another Rashard Lewis-esque signing... i hope they're happy with his contract eating up a third of their payroll for the next 6 years

I couldn't imagine that he would've passed up that kind of money. Unlike someone like LeBron, Joe Johnson is basically unmarketable, so he needs to take as much contract dollars as he can, if that's his goal.
Wishing everyone well. I enjoyed posting here for a while, but as I matured I realized this forum isn't for me. We all evolve. Thanks for the memories everyone.

Screaming A. Smith thought Joe was key to bringing Lebron here. Thought Joe, Amare and Lebron would team up in NY. Of course Screamin' A has flip-flopped a ton since the FA period started so take it for what its worth.

What was Atlanta thinking? I like Joe Johnson but 119 mil for 6 years ? Did they not see the playoffs last year ? Oh well I didn't want Joe anyway. I just hope this doesn't mean we're signing Mike Miller.

Yeah, there's too many agendas going around. Screaming A has been really bad with the flip flopping, but so has the rest of the media. I think there's a lot of "sources" who simply have agendas, and nobody really knows that much. If the only consistency is inconsistency, it's a reasonable conclusion that there just isn't much real information.

No doubt about it. He can do a little more for a team than Lewis, but this is still a terrible contract. Atlanta has to do something significant on the court in the next 2 years or this is a team limiting contract of major proportions.

I lost faith in the Hawks organization when they drafted Sheldon Williams over Chris Paul, especially when they desperately needed a young point guard.

This move is just as retarded.

Its insane money for Joe but Atlanta basically had no where to go to maintain or improve their position except to bring back Joe and hope the thing got better organically around him.

I have no idea whats going through Atlanta's mind either- they really should have just let him walk- yeah, they'd miss the playoffs but they might do anyways, Bibby's almost finished, they can't afford to sign anyone else probably for the rest of the contract- Crawfords probably going to walk, and they went for the cheap option when picking a new coach. Didn't they draft Marvin Williams instead of Chris Paul and Deron that year when they really needed a point guard? I think Shelden Williams was a blunder form a different year where they made a promise to him ridiculously early in draft evaluating stages, a lot higher than he was forecast to go. Really they have only themselves to blame!

Mind you I think Joe Johnson made a mistake, as he may have got the extra money but i think he'll be miserable- he doesn't seem to like Atlanta and it's fans, and the rest of his career will be spent playing on an irrelevant team, achieving nothing. I'd rather take the $92million and play in a better a city on a better team, than take $120mil and be miserable and irrelevant.

Thankfully we didn't sign him though!

ALT can still trade him. Dallas would work.

Crazy money for Joe for sure........I think they felt if they don't stay as a playoff team they are doomed. They can trade Williams and bring back Josh from greece.

Not my problem.

if they are willing to carry and $80mm payroll to keep Hordord, Smith, JJ and Marvin around long term good for them. They cant carry that kind of payroll though.

Well, what's funny is in one year, Joe Johnson will be considered an unmoveable burden when they realize this. Hmm, maybe we should keep a few bad contracts after we fill up this offseason and then we have a shot at Joe Johnson.

these clowns are all about the money.. Joe can forget winning a ring with the hawks, they have no other means or chips to get that team to contender status... my buddy down here said he is not renewing his hawks season tickets.. he was hoping joe signed with NY.. rofl.. and this guy spends 15k a year on 5 seats on the floor.. a lot of fans are pissed....

I think Atlanta is going to move Marvin Williams and Bibby.

Plus you forget they can still move Johnson next summer if they want.

Would you turn down that kind of money? Look all the teams competing for these free-agents haven't won a title in the last decade so what should they do take a huge pay cut to play in Boston, SA, or LA?
