We would have won a title by now. #1 The players we now see entertaining us with atheletisism is what nelly wanted. When he challenged Ewing to to move over so the offense wouldn't go thru him, possibly Pat would have wanted a trade earlier in his carear and we could have got some real talent and good picks and possibbly a young talent center in later drafts like a gasol. Who really knows what type of direction Nellie and his son would have taken this team. Dolan spends money just like Cuban and to me that is all Nellie needed to bring the knicks back to an exciting ball moving dominate team in the east. With Gundy on staff as an assistant to work on defense, this team would be the team we all crave for till this day. COMPETENT COACH COMPETENT ASSISTANTS, SUPERIOR TALENT.
JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

IF Nelson stuck then JVG would never have been an issue.

Nellie wanted to reduce Ewings role and Ewing let the revolt. Ewing basically played hardball that if JVG did not become coach, then he was leaving.

Checketts and Dolan panacked.

Ewing inabilty to see his himself with ability in decline and wanting the big money bought the team down. The rest is well documented.

Nellie wanted to rebuild the team. With Ewing not as the main player, but as a CORNERSTONE it could have worked. The run up in 1999 was part luck, but a franchise desire to WIN NOW.

JVG was the coach asked to keep it going. He left for burnout reasons, and the team sucked, needed to be rebuilt, and he was being held accountable for performance. Well under those cicumstances it stands to reason he should tell the team to shove it.

Playa, He kept the team propped up for a long time. To say he bought it down is plain stupid. The rockets are better this year, but the are not yet ready to challenge. Judging him any more than that is stupid.

Saying Knicks should not have made deal after 4 game win streak is short sighted. That was no knee jerk reaction. Whether he paid to much or not is a seperate issue.

Sorry but Ewing was in decline and for that reason he led the revolt by not being "THE MAN". Don Nelson in the east with Dolan pockets couldn't be nothing but success.

Nelson should have become the GM, not the coach. He was the only person back then who had a realistic view of the Knicks' personnel. If Grunfeld hadn't been able to get Sprewell at a bargain basement price, the team would have crashed and burned years earlier. Spewell's presence obscured the larger problems with the team.

IMO Nellie would not have worked out in NY. Dallas is a better fit for him. Isiah Thomas, on the other hand, suits the NY Style just fine.

I'm happy with Isiah, but the Knicks weren't in salary cap hell when Nellie was on board. The GM job was a lot easier back then.

That's why we would have exceled under him as coach. Nellie couldn't be a GM he's a coach and will always be a coach, not a tv guy.

WHAT HAS DON NELSON EVER WON AS A COACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WITH ALL THE TALENT HE HAS NOW, HE IS ONLY 21-16!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I AM SO TIRED OF THIS! THIS IS ALMOST 10 YEARS AGO NOW! GIVE IT A FU$$ING REST ALREADY!

JVG GOT THE JOB AND DID VERY WELL IN IT. NOW HE IS IN HOUSTON AND THE KNICKS STINK.

Speaking in your hypotheticals is just plain foolish!

Ernie was not a great GM (he merely looks decent because Layden was so incompetent), and Checketts made most of the basketball decisions anyway. Name one of their draft picks that made a big impact. There aren't any. More importantly, neither Grunfeld nor Checketts were able to get another star player to compliment Ewing while he was still in his prime.

I'm not a Don Nelson fan, but maybe this year with all the injuries and the showcase talent, he'll get a ring. Let's not forget Grunfeld set the stage with Spree and Camby. That Stage was set for Phil Jackson. But nooooo, somebody had to leak secret talks, sympathy took over good judgement and the fans out of desperation for a winner looked at Beetle Juice as the workingman's coach. And that all happen in a asterisk year ! At the end of VG's run this team went nowhere, we were bamboozled!

NY is the Mecca, Why settle for less

Elite, the deal is Ewing didn't fit. He stayed and we just treaded water under vandunce. Nellie new the pulse of where the NBA was going... Internationally GLOBAL. If we would have kept him here with vandefense as an assistant who knows how far and what kind of talent he would have plucked for our Beloved knicks!

Exactly where the Mavs are now and the Knicks were with JVG. Without a ring!!

That comment was irrelevant silver, stick with topic at hand, we would have never been looking this bad if we would have traded ewing and got other talent and draft picks for him while he was still worth something. Nellie would have done that, After we lost to Houston in Finals we should have dealt ewing. Nellie would have.
