Steve Kerr will not return as president of basketball operations and general manager of the Phoenix Suns.

Kerr's contract expires June 30 but he had been expecting and hoping to return until negotiations for his contract and an opportunity to return to television as a NBA commentator prompted him to leave the organization after three years as its GM. Kerr could not be reached for comment.

Suns owner Robert Sarver wanted GM Steve Kerr to take a paycut in new contract, league source says.

Nash was on Mike and Mike this morning. He said he would do whatever he could to get Amare to stay and encourage other players to come to Phoenix.

Don't we need a Gm and eventually successor to Donnie? I'd love him on the Knicks... I love how Kerr reinvented the Suns when that roster was all but dead.

the only thing steve did was trade for shaq, fued with MDA, hire porter, then fire him. Im not sure he left anykind of stamp on the team at all, they having success before he got there.

He messed up the coaching change/style change, un-did his mess up, got Jason Richardson and Robin Lopez, while adding the likes of Grant Hill, Louis Amundson, and Channing Frye into the mix. I think he did a masterful job of breathing life into that team. He reshuffled the deck and built a more than solid team

how did he breath life into a team that was avg 58 wins with out him, i thought he did a respectful job, but no ones going to be banging down his door with offers..

Why would you leave a GM position for doug collins spot on TnT, that just seems retarded

Think about it, would you rather have a high-stress job, where you are always under the microscope and people are constantly challenging you and criticizing?

Or would you rather have a job where you get paid to have the best seat in the house for all the good NBA games of the week, and all you have to do is talk about basketball and run your mouth about your opinions? After the games you'll have no responsibilities and you can casually stroll to your hotel room, order some fine liq, and then bang out a groupie of your choice

I agree with this. He almost destroyed that team trading for shaq. He dug himself out of a hole and did alright, but it was clear he was way in over his head and he got out while the getting was good. Not bad.

I think Kerr was nothing more than hatchet man. He was brought in to clean house and build a more a defensive style of play. He blew that and got the opportunity to clean up his mess. Most GMs don't have that opportunity.

At best, you can say that Kerr leaves the Suns at the same level they were when he came in.

The messed up thing is that while Kerr was fumbling around, he let Nash lose 2 Seasons of his precious career as the the Suns dropped down with the Shaq Experiment and the Porter Fiasco, before he put something together that made sense. He tried to change up too much of what the team was, which is fine if you commit fully to a new style, but he went halfway adding Shaq while the rest of the roster was still made to run. Just getting back to where you were doesn't count as a positive when you have a team that is as close as his was to making the finals.

The Amare issue is more interesting. The more guys that hit the open market the better for us. We're a top 3 destination so if you put Bosh, Amare and Johnson out there as pretty sure bets to be looking to move it really helps our cause. It makes me wonder even more about what Dirk wants to do. As old as Dirk is i'd take him over Boozer in a micro second if we missed out on Bosh. Since he's more of a finesse player, he likely will be good another 4-5 years. I'd do a 5 yr contract with Dirk.
