I have been very encouraged by the reaction of the professional sporting world. There were several baseball players who spoke out, and there has been talk that the MLB might relocate the All-Star game. Now the NBA is taking a stand. This is a good look.

There is a disassociation many have with racial profiling (i.e white folks), they've never really experienced it so it doesnt strike a cord. What they dont understand is that cops will use race-first, inductive reasoning to support harassment of all hispanic people. Thats just the way shyt goes --- legal or illegal. Its humiliating, demeaning, and completely un-american. All those folks hollering about Obama infringing on their rights are predictably giddy about a law that will severely infringe on the rights of many Americans.

Even though Bush was hispanic friendly, activism of any kind was treated with hostility by the powers that during his administration. Its good to see those days are long gone.

I've been less than encouraged by Black folks who seem to generally react with ambivalence when its some other group being put on the lynch tree --- whether it be gays, arabs, or hispanics. I guess we're just happy when the heat is taken off of us a little. Thats bitchassness

I am confused why illegal immigration problem is about Hispanic people and race.
Illegal immigrants are of all races and nations.
It is equally wrong and un-American to treat people based on race - if someone is not obey to the low he/she should be treated equally regardless of the race.
If Russians or Serbs are departed because they are illegal so Hispanics, Asian, of Africans should be departed same way.
Race should not be used to bring people down but it should not be an excuse for anything also.
And if somebody is dumb, lazy, or corrupt by generations of baggers their race is not an excuse.

What is the confusion? Do you think white guys will get pulled over by cops because of this law? That is where the question of race comes in doesn't it? This is blatant holier than thou type law that makes it OK for cops with racist predisposition to now profile people for no good reason other than they look mexican. This law will affect civil rights of people who have NOT done anything illegal, get it?

Al Sharpton is leading a march tomorrow in PHX. There are some who will act on behalf of anyone who is being mistreated. It doesn't always get as much press coverage.

i don't usually partake in political discussion here but i have been racially profiled and i don't mind it at all.

after 9/11, i've been pulled off lines many times to get frisked before entering a sporting/music event.

what does a terrorist look like? to the united states, the terrorist looks middle eastern/arab b/c that's who attacked the country.

am i middle eastern or arab? no...but i have no problems with being asked to show them what's in my bag b/c the guy 10 feet away from me, could have something in there.

it sucks. what can i say? but it's one way to increase safety.

right now, in arizona, the majority of the illegal immigrants are most likely mexican. so they have to ask people that "look mexican" for ID. illegal immigration is not good for this country so how do you crack down on it? is there any other way than racial profiling?

we have to deal with what situation we are presented with. after 9/11, middle eastern folks are what we associate as terrorists. mexicans are what we associate as illegal immigrants. it totally sucks but that's how it is in the united states right now.

what other proposed solution can work?

I like it when they pull the little old people out of line and frisk them instead of middle-eastern me. Bwahahaha i can't tell you how good that feels.

It is because of our huge border with Mexico, which has mainly Latino people. The few people who are here illegally from other parts of the world are not a problem for the Arizona "keep 'em out" crowd.

Biggups and much respect to Los Suns for making a statement. I agree that more teams should do this, especially in baseball which has a majority Latino player-base.

I lived in Jerusalem for a year after college. I am white and Jewish, but I was searched (incl. my bags) EVERY time I did any of the following (even by security guards who already knew me):

- enter any major building (library, bank, government offices, etc.)
- go to the movies
- go to the mall
- go anywhere near the PM's residence (I lived a block away)

It's an unfortunate fact of life when it comes to places with high risk for terrorism. And it sucks. Let's hope Arizona doesn't think all the folks coming here to mow lawns and work in restaurants are suicide bombers.

that was exactly my response. The great thing about this country is you get to speak up. You get to have a voice. You get to challenge the leaders and the law makers. You have various ways of saying something is unfair and fighting it. Various ways that can bring results.

What people fair to see is AZ did this as because the Fed Gov wont. Every law or initiative they have passed is soft and ineffective. Why do you think regular people have taken to guarding the borders?

So I would ask the people who think this is unfair and unjust what is your solution?

This law wasnt passed so cops can harass Mexicans. It was passed because other laws to police illegal immigration have failed.

Saw a little of the Phoenix and San Antonio game last night and I have a gut feeling Mike D'Antoni will beg him to sign Channing Frye.

This is a genuinely distressing post. The man got you trained real good.

Your acceptance of the proverbial foot on your neck is not pragmatism; dont do that to yourself or your family. Look, this country gained its independence in order to grant you, as an American citizen, basic unalienable rights. Civil liberties, individualism all that kind of shyt that they say is the foundation of this country and is granted to everybody --- not just white people.

When McVeigh blew up Oklahoma, when that fool recently flew a plane into the IRS building, and when there was a rash of violent incidents committed by right-wing fanatics tied to the anti-Obama contingent and inspired by the likes of Beck, Hannity, Rush, there was a call from the F.B.I and other organizations to better monitor right-wing extremism --- i.e white folks.

Well, when conservatives caught wind of this there was a huge outcry. Immediately they started sounding like Al Sharpton, recoiling at the horror that they would in any way find themselves profiled no matter what ramifications there were to the idea of collective "safety".

Not for one second would they stand for being lumped in based on beliefs or skin color. But for people of color, there is no problem to make every one of us representatives of the negative caricatures of our race.

Remember, people supposedly died in all of these wars to protect you from that kind of harassment.

This is about legal citizens of Mexican or Hispanic origin who will certainly find themselves harassed and oppressed. You cant tell who is of legal citizenship based on appearances, no more than you can tell somebody's personality based on their dress.

The measures being taken by Arizona is not rid us of illegal Canadian immigrants or Serbs...this is a full-frontal assault on the constitution because the rights of people of color are of little interest to those in power when it comes to political expediency.

There are better ways to combat the problem of illegal immigration than infringing on the rights of legal American citizens.

cop sees an extended cab pickup truck with 3 guys in the front seat, 4 guys in the back seat and 6 guys riding in the cab. He pulls them over. He says where you guys coming from. They say they work on the condo construction site 4 miles up the road. Cop says you boys got proper ID? 11 guys do, 2 don't. Cop says "rules say you need to have proper ID. Please make sure you do in the future."

where those guys harassed and oppressed?

I mean... what's the concern here? That the cops will use it as an excuse to pull over every hispanic driving through the nice white neighborhoods?

Is it just that cops have too much power now?

I think its fair to say those things but what's the solution? Its easy to say something is unfair or wrong, but its a weak argument if you don't have better suggestion.

The point of this law is to protect those who aren't breaking it. It may be ill conceived. I think much of it is a statement from a state to the federal gov saying you are leaving us very little choice. Thoughts?

Fishmike, the scenario that you posed would demand the attention of law enforcement regardless (Ur not allowed to ride in the bed of a truck). Its not fair to dream up extreme examples to justify what Arizona is trying to pull off.

This law is focusing on race, not the act of illegal immigration. This is giving cops a license to discriminate. I dont think that is resonating with many people because they haven't been on the receiving end of such harassment. Its designed to humiliate and create a second class citizenship environment.

We can renew our focus to secure our borders. We legitimately attack employers that hire immigrants (which is the real problem). We can also re-evaluate amnesty. There are plenty of other measures that focus on the problem rather than encouraging blatant discrimination. That should not be taken lightly. It would cement the fact that the idea of America is a lie if this gains traction.

I hear you. Sharpton is a rider, but remember he doesnt reflect all Black people. Generally speaking, I've been underwhelmed by the response of many Black people when it comes to civil liberty issues for those of other races. Just something I've observed.

Exactly. Thats why focusing on race is so flawed.

Oh, but acts of terrorism are committed by Muslims, so why dont we just profile them! First of all, thats complete bullshyt and second of all if we narrowly focus on race why wouldnt they just employ a white guy or another hue to do their bidding. Remember that John Walker Lihn (sp?) cat that was a Al Q sympathizer?
