The rolling stone that gathered lots of bad memories as it swelled for 10 years and crushed the dreams and hopes of a franchise began with a simple push, which Patrick Ewing feels remorseful for applying.

There are many who are far guiltier of creating the Decade of Disaster for the Knicks. Yet nobody feels worse about it than the one who unintentionally sent them careening.

"If I had it to do all over again," said Ewing. "I wouldn't have requested a trade."

"Everybody was talking about how the team was better off without me, so ... " he said, leaving you to finish the thought.

What a depressing article. :(

The big man was on the decline, but he did deserved to finish his career as a Knick. I still don't understand why no one has reached out to him in the organization and set aside a spot for him on the bench.

Patrick never made peace with the media and it bit him in the ass as he went on the decline.

This is a guy that did not yield a thing to anyone.

Dolan is a very loyal guy to his players. Ewing for years also held them hostage to his every demand and had Nellie run out of town when he tried to reduce Ewings role in 1996!

SO pay back is a bitch. Ewing is HOF, top 50 player and a millionaire manytimes over. Lets not feel too bad for him.

He could have said "one more year then Im gone. And Im gonna do a Wilt and be a defensive force and not worry about my touches.

He could have orchestrated a better strategy then what he did and would even be our head coach by now.

He got greedy.

NY fans are tough but he knew this from the beginning and could have made it work TO his advantage.

Its unfortunate for all. He gets a big plus in my book for stepping up and admitting after all these years. I thought he was silly to whine that he never got an interview for a head coaching job here. I never saw his resume as justifying for one.

I do hope he can get a good gig somwhere. Man has a big ego!

Tell me about it....Depressing indeed:

The top free agents look at the Knicks and just don't see enough talent to win. Maybe, had the Knicks drafted Brandon Jennings last summer, or traded up for Stephen Curry, they would've had a real shot at signing one of the free agent Big Three.

Instead ... Carlos Boozer, anybody?

Anyway...trading Ewing wasnt the problem, and really what we received back wasnt that bad. When we traded Rice for Eisley and Anderson, thats when all hell broke loose.

That trade was worse that the Curry deal. Both of those scrubs had murderous deals and they were beyond trash as players. The fukk was Layden thinkin?

I agree. He had to go. Duke was a warrior but he was also toxic and he had worn out his welcome. Its one thing to be a primadonna when you're scoring 25 a game, but people are going to lose patience fast when you're trying to pull that shyt while old, flabby, and sick.

The deal was fine, it was the subsequent deal after getting Rice which I already mentioned.

The original trade was also terrible. Glen Rice was signed to 4 years/$36M extension. Patrick Ewing was an expiring contract and more productive than Rice and that bum Luc Longley even at his age.

good points. I loved ewing, but the guy was stubborn at times.. Honestly, he was the reason nelson was run out of town and I think nelson had the right idea of how to use Ewing.. just came across in a way only nellie can and piss off players..

Announcers always criticized Ewing of wanting his touches when he could have been even more of a defensive force than he was..

in the end, we made a mistake trading him and he asking for a trade..

good post nalod.

Thats not a bad deal and Rice was still an alright player at that point. Just a few years prior he was like a top 15 player.

Trading him for Eisley and Anderson was just tragic.

The real plan was having, in prime a front line of Mutumbo, Vin Baker and glen rice. H20 in the back court.

In their prime or near it would have worked prett good.

Really Holfresh? That's the first time I heard that. I thought it was Chris Mullin that was the alchahalic.

Both were...Nellie was a massive alcoholic...So was Mullin...Yeah it was a big deal kept under wraps...

The NBA had to stop Donnie from drinking at post game interviews...They use to say he would have a beer or 6 at the post game interview...

Jimimou, I saved in the past the curse kicked in after that decision was made to let Ewing walk.

JAMES DOLAN on Isiah : He's a good friend of mine and of the organization and I will continue to solicit his views. He will always have strong ties to me and the team.

I agree that it wasn't just the fact they traded Ewing....it was every single move Layden made during his time as a Knicks Gm. best move was stern having a meeting making Dolan sit down and play his guitar while an OG like Donnie made over the entire situation. Cap is completely healthy now and the Knicks have 34-36 mil to sign the right guys.
