The Portland Trail Blazers are working toward securing Marcus Camby to a contract extension, according to sources with knowledge of the talks.

Sources said Monday that the two sides had already been negotiating toward a new deal that would keep Camby off the free-agent market this summer.

One source said a deal, if completed, would likely span two years in excess of $20 million.

Camby teamed with Andre Miller to spark the Blazers to a 105-100 victory Sunday night over the third-seeded Phoenix Suns.

Portland acquired Camby before the trading deadline from the Los Angeles Clippers after losing centers Greg Oden and Joel Przybilla to season-ending knee injuries.

Although the Blazers remain hopeful that Oden can still have a productive career after missing the bulk of two of his first three NBA seasons, they have been pleased with Camby's immediate impact. According to sources, they're determined to lock him up before has the chance to become a free agent July 1.

One source said Monday that the Blazers have been hopeful of reaching an extension with Camby since acquiring him from the Clippers.

I guess we can scratch him off the list. No way would I expect Walsh to give Camby 10 million of 2010 cap space.

though hopefully donnie takes a good long look at what's NOT working for phoenix in that portland/phoenix playoffs series. d'antoni's system doesn't work in the playoffs.

I really wish he gives us a look.

I like Marcus Camby but he's not the long term solution at Center.

Nobody said he was, including Camby himself. That's why he's probably willing to accept a 2 year deal (If this is true) when in fact, it's really a 1 year deal b/c of the strike that will probably be occuring after next season.

I was in Portland two weeks ago (went to that awful Knicks loss) and when I was watching the local sports news Camby was saying how he has never loved playing anywhere more than Portland. How the fans took him in as one of their own from day 1 and that he was so thankful and grateful for being to play somewhere like Portland and that there was nowhere he'd rather be. It certainly didn't sound to me like he was going anywhere else.
"It was good," Curry said. "I killed Malik, Jerome. The usual suspects. It felt good."

That's the thing with free agency and everyone having it--it will bid everyone up. Some people pondered about getting Camby for 6mm and Portland is willing to go above 10mm. Look at all of these teams in the with multiple 6-11 guys starting on their frontlines.

Man. EVER SINCE, we traded Camby he has been doing his thing! What a shame.

37 is crazy old, but results are results. Camby is a beast in the blocks and tough as nails. He'd look good on this squad with Lebron (no lance bass)

What did Camby major in UMass? Public Relations? Dude is well spoken and always seems to make the right quote. I remember when he was traded for Oakley and people in NY was upset. He did not give anything to the tabloids. Marcus does not burn any bridges.

I don't think they go 20 million. That's a lot of cash with Miller, Roy, Larmcus all signed to nice deals and oden. But they do have cash.

And Mike's system was working fine for them in the playoffs. People really underestimate just how good Andre Miller is. He wins every place he goes. Denver, Philly, Portland and even had the cavs playing good ball back in the day. Portland has a lot of great talent out there, Batum being another piece.

Camby is one of the smarter players in the league and having him next to lee would have been nice.

Camby is more of a fallback option if we can't get someone else, so it's not the end of the world. Like Ewing and Mark Jackson, his trade was one I never agreed with.

eh..If you are a NYer I don't think that would bother you. He is still human and 9 out of 10 times he will say the politically correct thing.

Yeah. I dont get the sense that he's a big town kinda cat. It seems like he responds better in middle markets. Didnt seem like he played well for the Clips as well.

Ouch. 12M per is a little steep. Maybe for 1 year but not 2.

I live in Portland now and Management and the whole town seems to be in love with Camby. He had a good game against Oklahoma and at the end of the game they started a Camby chant which I'm sure made him feel like he's wanted along with these new extension talks. Camby has been a beast and then some this last month he's blocking shots, rebounding and scoring. Miller has helped make him look good by driving/slashing and dishing off to Camby for easy buckets so he's also been scoring. I guess 37 is the new 25...

Definitely didn't bother me. I actually agreed with him at the time, and even now. I'd love to have him back here.
