Hornets Interested In David Lee?

Apr 16, 2010 12:31 PM EST
A source tells Marc Berman that the Hornets are "in love with David Lee."

The Hornets will not have the cap room to sign David Lee this off-season so a sign-and-trade deal would need to be worked out.

Berman speculates that Chris Paul could be made available if the team believes he will bolt New Orleans in 2012. Also the large contract of Emeka Okafor would presumably be one that the Hornets have interest in shedding to gain financial relief.

I'm not sure how Omeka would fit as a center in this offense, but I'm willing to take the chance if Paul is included in the deal. But this is coming from Berman, so I shouldn't get my hopes up.

Pretty sure we'll have to include Wilson Chandler and Toney Douglas. We're talking Chris Paul here.

Done. We're giving them major cap relief. But we're also taking ourselves out of the running for a possible run at Melo.

This will probably be the first of 5,000 rumors swirling around the next, in the next few months.

More likely Gallo will have to be included unless you are telling me that Hornets are prepared to give him $14 million. Hornets are not in the Knicks position and have to have roster space so I don't see how they can take back 4 players and still have room for their draft pick. Chandler and Toney don't make enough to make that deal anywhere near possible. Which is lol because I posted this scenario before with a question about whether people were willing to give up Gallo for Paul.

Berman? LOL

Too funny. Odds of David Lee agreeing to play in New Orleans are slim too none.

Why? Isn't he from STL? I think he would have a problem because Paul and Okafor would be leaving in the deal.

He didnt want to go to Memphis so I doubt he wants to go to New Orleans.

Let me preface my comments by saying I think CP3 is overrated, he's only had one really good playoff run and he's often hurt. But with that being said he is still their franchise player. And trading him with your one viable center seems kind of nuts. Plus David West is already giving them good low-post production so why rebuilding your entire franchise just to get David Lee.

i think DLee for Collison/Okafor makes much more sense.

edit: in terms of a realistic deal for both teams.

Just a question, why would New Orleans trade their best player and big man for David Lee, when they can just sign him out right????

I'd love that deal.. CP3 in the Garden, That'd be great.. but i just cant see this happening.

Chris Paul could be an MVP in ANY system... IMO. (Best Point Guard in the Game, when healthy.)

New Orleans can't sign Lee outright. They're over the cap! The entire rumor is based on the fact that NO was over the cap last year and had to make a trade to get just under the Threshold. NExt year they won't be so lucky, due to salary increases and the threshold being a tad lower too. SO they either pay the 73 mil PLUS another 17 mil in luxury tax for a team that may not even make the playoffs, or they make a trade so they can start over in terms of their cap structure.

Rather than look at CP3 and say "why would they trade their best player" People need to realize that they can get a lot out of a much cheaper player like Collison, who has shown he can really play. NO thinking would be let's keep the cheaper PG even if he's not as good, but he's good enough that we can go ahead with him and get some other players to build a better team. This is exactly the kind of deal many of us have been saying the cap space gives us a chance to do. It's not a pipe dream, it's very possible.

CP3 getting hurt was a blessing in disguise for NO. They got a chance to see that Collison could step in and play well and this means they could survive without CP3 and restructure their team by sending him away now and gaining the cap space they crave so they can rebuild a bit with cheaper players.

Rather than look at CP3 and say "why wouldn't they trade him to the Knicks to unload his salary" People need to realize that they can get a lot more value than what the Knicks have to offer from other teams for a player like CP3, who has shown he is one of the best players in the NBA.

Most teams would have to match salary if they're near or over the cap. Plus how many of those teams would be so willing to take back salary in a cap clearing way as we would? Not many teams have that ability or willingness. How many teams would help their cap situation and not even blink?

We're saying OK we'll take that long Okafor contract off your hands and this way you can restructure your team in a more affordable way for your market. Understand that the Hornets were #23 in he league in attendance. They avg'd about 15,130 per game. They can't do that again plus pay 73 mil and the luxury tax which could be 90 mil for a mediocre team. We help solve their immediate problem more than an exchange of talent would.

I think CP3 would thrive in the MDA system. But if the trade required Lee/Curry AND Wilson, I'd rather resign Lee and trade Wilson for Rubio's rights. That way we still keep the expiring fatass deal to give ourselves back some cap room for 2011. While CP3 is a star, he is not on the level of Wade and Lebron. We just traded our 2012 first rounder, so we better have a damn good team after this summer. Otherwise we are in big trouble.
