Just finished watching the NBA Board of Governors press conference on NBA TV. Anyone know how this impacts our ability to sign additional free agents in addition to two max guys?

Good news as we have about 21mil committed so that is nearly $2mil more than we need to sign 2 Max guys.

not sure it's that great news. The bigger the cap the better but...

At $54M, the max contract knicks could offer is $16.2, while at $56 the max is $16.8. So you sign 2 max guys and you the difference is you have $1M more to spend ($54 vs $56M).

so, is there REALLY a difference?

if you sign 1 Max guy, the diff is $1.5M. If you sign some extra guys at less than max, $2M.

means we have $38mm in cap space as opposed to the $34 many projected.

I have been telling people for 6 months that the $52mm cap number was bullsheet.

Same cap # as last year

Sweet. I expected a drop but I guess not.

Max deals are a percentage of the cap so this doesnt necessarily help us because the max guys with just eat more cap. It hurts us because now other teams will have more space to sign 2nd tier guys.

the difference is if we sign 1 max guy and fill out the roster with Lee, Walker, Livingston, Giddens, etc etc

You see the extra money in those scenarios

im lookin at 1 max guy (lebron, wade, bosh, amare) then a guy like gay and then filling in with the remaining money.

Stern said it was slightly lower than last year and he was unable to come up with a hard figure at the close of the presser. He also mentioned something about a decrease in luxury tax revenue, which I could care less about. But it sounds like the extra space won't have much of an affect on our ability to sign one more free agent player.

It's GREAT news to me because it means we can afford to keep Buffalo Bill Walker without hurting the cap.

Too bad we don't still have Lee's Bird rights. That would be an ideal situation.

It's good news because it now ensures that we have enough to offer 2 max slots.

If you remember correctly, a lot of people thought we would fall just short of having enough for that 2nd slot.

Of course, I've been saying for a long ass time now that the cap projections were being ultra conservative. Any one want to disagree now?

But anyway, Walsh can now officially slide two max contracts across the table to LeBron and Bosh and see how badly they want to play together.

We still have Lee's bird rights and we don't have to renounce those rights until we are about to use the cap space that it would open up.

Walsh doesn't have to renounce Lee's birds until the last minute. So if he sees that LeBron and Bosh isn't happening, he can still use Lee's bird rights to offer that 6th year. Of course, by the time that we find out what LeBron and Bosh are doing, Lee may have already signed with a different team. That is why Donnie has to be careful as hell this summer.

Yes, Max salary is a percentage. So if the cap is 2 mil more, the FA gets about $600,000 more. Times two free agents, we still have an extra $800,000.

generally speaking, I don't think you can resign Lee and get LeBron and Gay without one of those 3 taking a significant pay cut.

Haywood-Barron
Lee-Chandler
Gallo-Walker

Are you including the 10 million dollar caphold for Lee, and the fact that Gay might command more money than that? Watson too. Lee too for that matter.
