I'm not referring to his out of control forays into the paint followed by a bad pass to a shooter. I am talking about his utter lack of ability to shoot or finish what he starts. I would rather give TD the starting job right now and let Sergio back him up.
Shooting is BY FAR the EASIEST skill to improve on with work (see Trevor Ariza - possibly the worst shot of all time while with the Knicks).
You can't teach Sergio's vision, ability to get into the paint and passing ability.
He's 23 and far too young to call a finished product.
If he works really hard on his shot --- he could blossom.
Remember Lee couldn't knock down a shot outside of 12 feet when he came to NY -- now he knocks down 18-20 footers consistently and with confidence.
Sergio is 23 and needs both time on the court and time in the gym working on that shot.
I really like the kid and really want him to stick with us.
I envision him playing with better more forceful offensive players and with a inside defensive presense that helps us initiate fast breaks lead by Sergio. It would be fun to see him running and gunning with a full compliment of offensive talent around him.
