I was really hoping he'd be available when the Knicks draft. I really feel that he's a perfect fit here at point, especially because refuses to play a center. he's big, can pass, and just gives a ****.

Hopefully the Knicks can move up to the early 20s and get him. Did anyone see the UMD/Duke game? (I DID!!!!!!!! Was on the Libyan tube... STOKED)

Maryland was unranked for a lot of this year and has been moving up because they're good. I also saw Greivis play in the States when I lived in DC. The thing about him is that he was always better than his surrounding parts, which makes it difficult to shine as a point.

Donnie, your scouting department sucks donkey balls. Listen to me!

Vasquez scores 41 points to lead Maryland to double overtime win over Virginia Tech
By Steve Yanda
Washington Post Staff Writer
Sunday, February 28, 2010; D01

BLACKSBURG, VA. -- Thirteen hours after his team first stepped on the court at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday, Maryland Coach Gary Williams sat at his postgame news conference, his forehead still damp with sweat. He could not categorize Saturday's affair -- a 104-100 double-overtime Terrapins triumph -- as merely another game or another road trip.

"This," Williams said, "is a chapter."

Senior guard Greivis Vasquez scored a career-high 41 points to help ensure that Maryland (21-7, 11-3) will earn no worse than the No. 2 seed in the upcoming ACC tournament. With the loss, Virginia Tech (21-7, 8-6) needs to win its two remaining regular season games and likely have a strong showing in the ACC tournament to nab an NCAA tournament berth.

But any and all exterior implications were lost amid the fervor of the final three periods of play.

Senior guard Eric Hayes drained a long two-point shot with 5.2 seconds left in regulation to put the Terrapins up by two. Williams said Hayes thought it was a three-point shot and, thus, did not defend the ensuing Virginia Tech inbounds play as vigorously as he otherwise would have.

Virginia Tech guard Malcolm Delaney raced the length of the court and scored a game-tying layup with 0.9 of a second on the game clock. Delaney tallied 14 of his team-high 27 points in the second half.

"If there's a better guard out there, I don't know who it is," Williams said of Delaney, the ACC's leading scorer.

Williams's own guard turned in quite a performance himself. Vasquez became the first Maryland player to tally more than 40 points in a game since Joe Smith in 1995 and the ninth ACC player ever to tally more than 40 points in a conference road game. En route, he passed Albert King for third place on Maryland's all-time scoring list.

Vasquez countered Virginia Tech's efforts to expand its lead early in the second half. Maryland trailed by eight just more than three minutes after the break before Vasquez scored eight points in 84 seconds. He later sank a three-pointer with 14 minutes 40 seconds remaining to push the Terrapins back in front, 53-52.

The back-and-forth affair included a surprisingly up-tempo pace, given Virginia Tech's preferred style of play. But Maryland's transition attack proved contagious as the two teams traded momentum throughout the final three periods. The lead changed hands 15 times in Blacksburg, where the Hokies previously were unbeaten this season.

"It was a heck of a game," Virginia Tech Coach Seth Greenberg said. "It was like a prize fight, with punches and counter-punches, teams getting knocked down and getting right back up."

With 45 seconds remaining in double overtime and the Hokies down two, Virginia Tech guard Dorenzo Hudson missed a transition layup. The ball went out of bounds off junior forward Dino Gregory, giving Virginia Tech another chance to tie the score. Delaney drew a foul on the ensuing inbounds play, but the 85 percent free throw shooter missed both shots.

Sophomore guard Sean Mosley then sank two free throws to provide the Terrapins a four-point lead, which came in handy when Virginia Tech forward Jeff Allen scored on a three-point play the old-fashioned way with 29.6 seconds left. Allen finished with 25 points and 15 rebounds.

"Virginia Tech gave it their all; we gave it our all," said Mosley, who registered 17 points. "And, you know, we poured it on down the stretch."

He paused to catch his breath after partaking in the highest-scoring ACC game since Wake Forest and North Carolina played to three overtimes in 2003.

"It's tough to win on the road, but then, you know, we had a little setback with the time of the game," Mosley continued. "But we just stayed focused and came out in the second half playing more hard."

The contest was delayed three hours because of a series of water main breaks on campus. But when Maryland's players took the floor at 9 a.m. Saturday morning for their pregame shootaround, it seemed like any other game day.

"We made a couple of mistakes there, but we didn't quit," Williams said. "And we had to battle back a couple other times. And so, to me, that's a great basketball team. Not how you look or whether it's pretty; it's just a great basketball team that won that game."/quote]

fter four years, Vasquez one of Maryland's all-time greats
Senior guard plays last game at Comcast Center tonight against Duke
March 03, 2010|By Jeff Barker | jeff.barker@baltsun.com
COLLEGE PARK — - Greivis Vasquez seemed to struggle with the question.

How, the animated guard was asked Tuesday, would he temper his emotions when he and fellow senior starters Landon Milbourne and Eric Hayes play the final home game of their careers tonight against No. 4 Duke? With a win, the 22nd-ranked Terps (21-7, 11-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) would tie the Blue Devils atop the conference standings with one game to play.

"It's a hard question to answer," Vasquez replied. "It's our last game. And it's hard. Tough."

For four years, Vasquez has been all about emotions. At times they have been his undoing, as when he shouted expletives at the Maryland student section last season after hearing a smattering of boos. He later apologized.

But more often than not, Vasquez has managed - particularly later in his career - to draw energy from his emotions. Like former tennis champion John McEnroe, Vasquez feeds on chaotic environments. But he has sharpened his focus on the court this season, saving his outbursts - such as a celebratory shoulder shimmy in front of taunting Florida State fans last month - for calculated moments.

"He always had the goal to be the best player he can be," said Maryland coach Gary Williams, who fought back his own emotions Tuesday when talking about Vasquez and the success of this season's senior-dominated team.

Williams said he knew Vasquez would be a unique personality when the player leaned into the coach's office on the first day of his freshman-season practice in 2006, saluted and said: "Reporting for duty, sir."

Vasquez enters the Duke game as an ACC Player of the Year candidate along with Duke's Jon Scheyer and Virginia Tech's Malcolm Delaney (Towson Catholic). Vasquez is third on Maryland's career scoring list behind Juan Dixon and Len Bias.

"Greivis is a sensational player," Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "He has talent and a great motor, and you have to love that about the kid."

There was a sense of passage as Vasquez, wearing a gray Maryland sweat shirt and black warm-up pants, sat in the Comcast Center media room Tuesday and reflected on his career.

"Playing four years and playing with my [Venezuelan] national team really got me more mature," he said. "Your decision-making is obviously way better. I feel more calm."

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Greivis Vasquez stood at the free-throw line -- his big shots already made, the win soundly secured -- and gazed at the crowd, the rim and the floor before going into his normal routine.

He bounced the ball three times, spun it once. Then he rose up, let it go, watched it fall through the net and started moving toward the other end of the court, where he would soon be surrounded by hundreds of fellow Maryland students, all of them celebrating a victory that created a first-place tie in the ACC standings.

Not all of Greivis Vasquez's crazy shots fall, but he'll be remembered for the clutch ones he makes on his Senior Night. (AP) "Unbelievable," Vasquez said. "It's just unbelievable."
Surely, there's a better word than unbelievable.

But unbelievable works.

So I'll just use unbelievable because it's absolutely unbelievable that Maryland won its sixth straight Wednesday night to create a tie with Duke atop the ACC, perfect that the 79-72 victory against the Blue Devils was clinched by one of Vasquez's ridiculous shots that always seem bad until they turn out awesome.

And, no, they don't always turn out awesome. But focusing on that would be to miss the point, because this ridiculous shot was awesome, and when you make awesome plays to win games on this stage -- particularly in March -- you and your shot-making ability deserve to be celebrated, not questioned.

"He didn't see anything wrong with it," said Maryland coach Gary Williams, a slight smile creeping through. "I'm with him."

That's why Williams is a Hall of Famer.

Smart choice.

It was fitting that Vasquez found himself with the ball in the final minute -- his Terps up 71-69, the ACC race still up for grabs -- because that was the only way for this game to end, with Vasquez either winning or losing it. A bad possession would allow Duke to tie or take the lead. So the stakes were high, the pressure intense. And what did Vasquez do? He ignored a ball screen, drove on Jon Scheyer, floated right, tossed the ball back left across his body and ... naturally ... watched it bounce and go in.

That bucket made it 73-69 with 38.6 seconds left.

Duke never did get a shot to tie.

"I was going to take the shot -- and the credit if I made it, and the hit if I missed it," said Vasquez, who finished with 20 points, five assists and four rebounds. "I was going to go for it. I was going to take that risk, and I got it in, and we won the game."

Like I said, perfect. I mean, what's better than the ultimate risk-reward player having his final game at the Comcast Center determined by the ultimate risk-reward play? The dynamic guard has spent four years developing a reputation as a guy whose explosive enough to beat anybody but reckless enough to cost you, as a guy colorful enough to inspire but too emotional for his own good. That's Vasquez.

Often, all of those characteristics show themselves in the same game, sometimes in the same half. But on this night -- his Senior Night -- only the positives were on display, and it all culminated at the free-throw line with 0.4 seconds remaining.

If you're into higher powers -- and Vasquez repeatedly reminded us that he is -- it's not a stretch to suggest the clock was stopped with so little time left just to let Vasquez soak it all in, to take a deep breath and long stare and truly grasp what he'd just done, i.e., led a team that was unranked in the preseason to a victory against fourth-ranked Duke, put a team that was unranked in the preseason in a position where a victory at Virginia this weekend will ensure at least a share of the ACC title.

And he did it with a ridiculous shot.

On national television.

Then he sat in the media room and talked about it all -- about coming from Venezuela, about his chances at ACC Player of the Year, about his love for his coach and university, about that shot and the celebration and everything that ran through his mind. Vasquez was loud and he was joking, and he was quick, engaging and full of energy.

Only once did he ever seem at a loss for words, and that came when somebody asked if this night -- his Senior Night -- could've gone any more perfectly.

"I don't think so," Vasquez said after a long pause. "This is a dream."

saw the highlights on ESPN last night... pretty crazy shot he made... seems like he plays with a lot of emotion, but how much substance is there to his game? is he just Sergio meets Nate in a 6'6" body, or can he really orchestrate an offense & play under control?

if we had a coach who would... coach, he will listen. kid wants to win and is willing to do stuff to make it happen. not sure how his game will translate to the pros. the least he will bring is some leadership, pride, desire to improve, will to win.

i don't think our coach is willing to develop anyone at the PG position... he wants a ready made star to lead this offense.

Finally got around to watching a replay of Maryland/Duke from the other night -- what can I say man, I just love this kid. Can't say enough good things about him...He's been one of my favorite college players to watch the past few years...To answer your question TMS, I think there's a ton of substance to his game. A TON....Very multi-faceted, multi-dimensional player. He contributes in every area. He's a big guard at 6'6" that can absolutely run the point in the NBA, even if asked to do it on a full-time basis right away as a rookie. No question in my mind..Excellent passer and very unselfish. He can create his own offense off the dribble and this year, finally, he's become a much more efficient outside shooter (career high 38% from 3 -- he's always had a good-looking stroke, just never connected on a good percentage until now)...Shoots FTs at an 85% clip, solid PG's handle, passes it, scores, rebounds, adequate defensively (he's a bigger guard but by no means slow and that plus size will only help him), a natural leader - he's really put it all together this year....Just a tremendous, diverse package of skills. And yeah, ya gotta love the emotion he plays with along with the little bit of flair he shows from time to time, occasionally throwing a nice no-look pass, etc.. (almost all of his passes are always right on the money). I wonder what coach K thinks of him -- Krzyzewski once raved about how underrated Mardy Collins was -- this kid Vasquez is similar to Collins, only better and he should be a better pro...I think he should be the ACC player of the year and a 1st rounder in next summer's draft for sure (Even as a lower 1st rounder, he's got very good value. EXCELLENT value if he falls to the 2nd round)...The Knicks need so much help in the backcourt at both positions -- I think they'd be crazy if they didn't look hard at this kid, and they'll probably have to move up into the 1st round to get him. MDA and the Garden crowd would love him. Absolutely love him. He's gonna make for one heck of a backcourt glue guy - the type of kid any NBA coach/GM should want in their foxhole with them...Gonna go see if I can find a replay of his 41-pt. game against VA Tech...
