Sources: D'Antoni Likes Johnson As Fallback Option
If the Knicks aren't able to sign LeBron James this summer, coach Mike D'Antoni likes Joe Johnson.

D'Antoni likes Johnson as a fallback option and considers him a nice piece to build around, sources told the New York Post.

Are they throwing this out there to see how much they will piss us off? Did we just trade Hill and our 2012 top pick so we could sign Joe J as our max guy? That would be some simple-minded shyte right there.

Whatever, I am not happy to read this shyte. Not one bit.

see how they're already setting the stage for possible failure to keep Knick fans' expectations low this summer?

Sure does seem like that. Testing the waters, so to speak, a typical PR ploy. Scary, if you ask me.

Joe Johnson is not a piece to build around... MDA has to be on drugs to even think it... the Suns built around Nash to have their success, not Joe Johnson... they freakin' traded this guy away for Boris Diaw & 2 future 1st round picks for crying out loud & they still won 54 games that year

Yeah, I imagine this how Pistons fans felt when they learned Dumars was targeting Ben Gordon last summer. I really don't see the point in wasting money if Joe Johnson is the best we can get. I'd rather wait for 2011's class. Carmelo or bust.

It's panic time at Christmas. When the store is about to close and you can't go home empty handed. You can't find what you really want but you have to grab something and run.

We can at least hope it's just spin, to make the FAs we actually want to sign (and their agents) a little nervous about our plans. At least I hope that's what it represents.

Fallback option meaning, if Lebron says no. So everyone here has come to the conclusion that Lebron probably aint coming to the big apple. What do you guys suggest we do when Lebron turns us down? Should the new slogan be Carmelo or bust 2011? And then he turns us down, Dwight or bust? and so on ans so forth....Instead of moaning and groaning why dont we offer some alternatives....

The new slogan could be "Everybody hates us."

Man remember Chicago in the late 90s. A lot of cap space, coming a championship and no one wanted their money but Ron Mercer.

Always trippin' on some 2010 crap. I think Joe Johnson is a baller and would be a nice piece to build around.

But the real question is: at what price?

I'm not sure he is worth max money, but he is a very good All-Star. But that will be up to the invisible hand of the FA market so to speak. Let's just hope Walsh is a steady negotiator.

And remember this is a TEAM game. Can we please stop obsessing with one or two players and think about building a frickin' team? You know, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole and whatnot?

I can't wait until we are talking about strongside/weakside, pick-n-roll, etc. instead of all this accounting crap.

Yeah and don't forget the Denver Nuggets with Kenyon Martin. Sometimes it just aint your day or night or year. The last thing you want to do is get stuck with the last call chick at the end of the bar.

Wasn't the 90's, it was like 2000-01 and the reason nobody wanted to sign there was because they had like Marcus Fizer and Bryce Drew starting for them. Their roster was beyond awful. I mean it was probably one of the worst rosters of all time. And back then I believe the Bulls only had space for 1 guy. They went after KG and came up empty and were close with McGrady until he chose Orlando.

i haven't come to the conclusion that Lebron's not coming... no one knows that answer yet except for Lebron if he even knows himself... but i'll tell u what my alternatives are if Lebron doesn't come to NY this summer:

1 - throw a tantrum on ultimateknicks.com that would make islesfan blush
2 - fire Donnie Walsh
3 - fire MDA
4 - hire a GM who won't mortgage our entire future on any 1 player to come here to be our savior
5 - hire a coach who will preach defense & an uptempo style offense predicated on ball movement & player movement w/o the ball rather than catching & shooting at will, & who won't play petty favorites in the lockerroom
6 - sign or trade for a PG who can run said offense using our cap space this summer if one is available
7 - sign or trade for a shotblocking, defensive C who can run the floor & finish
8 - go hard after Chris Bosh & sell him on the plan that he'll be "the man" in NY
9 - if Bosh says no, throw another tantrum on ultimateknicks.com
10 - shift my entire focus to baseball

Maybe Joe will get talked into taking less so they can bring a buddy. Suns 2.0 could be in the cards with him and Amare, and maybe they'll take a paycut to get some solid teammates on the squad 'cause they love themselves some . Seems more plausible that these under-the-radar guys be the ones to do that than the Great One Whose Name Shall Not Be Spoken.

Who knows. Just by replying to this thread I've proven I'm part of the problem anyway.

Um... you stole my ideas. The next GM should be on the phone with the Hornets as soon as Lebron shakes Ferry's hand. Get out there with Lee for some S&T talks particularly with the Thunder. I would add that I would target Camby no matter what.

See I don't see that. Why wouldn't he just take what Atlanta would be offering then.
