Where I agree with Briggs:
- I like the idea of acquiring young assets/picks. Always has been my biggest thing. You won't find a guy out there more interested in the youth than me...That's how you build it back up IMO. Even at the expense of a guy like David Lee, who I really respect the hell out of btw for the way he's improved his game this year. Still, I'd entertain S&T ideas for him this off-season in a heartbeat. Absolutely...With enough quality young talent in tow, you then can go two ways as a franchise: (1) You eventually amass enough young talent where suddenly the pieces start falling into place and you have the foundation -- then you go ahead & add the big FA or two to the mix or (2) you amass enough quality youth to put yourself in position to execute big all-in trades like the one Ainge made with Minny for The Ticket. Either way, you don't get off the ground w/o assembling as much young talent as possible. There's never such a thing as adding "too much" when it comes to young players or picks if you ask me. Unless you're the Lakers (which is why I'm interested in purchasing their 1st rounder once again this year)...Plus watching young players develop is just more exciting anyway. With enough young talent that turns out well, now you're talking dynasty or close to it as opposed to a few year window and then that's it (Boston). Hey Boston went all in and got their championship so power to 'em, but if I had my choice, I'd rather remain patient a little longer & build it up going with choice #1. Just my personal preference. I get enough personal enjoyment watching the Yankees & college hoops where at this point, this late in the game, I'll remain patient and continue to wait this thing out here. No way do you scrap the whole thing now and go out and get guys like Carlos Boozer or Joe Johnson. That would ruin everything and be a colossal groundhog day of a failure. So I agree with some of you there as well..
- I would definitely see what I could get for Gallinari in a trade. I just don't think he's big-time at all guys. Sorry. Supposedly healthy now (I wasn't prepared to kick the guy in the teeth when he was down & out last year and thought people who chose to do so were nuts -- this season's a little different), this guy just hasn't shown me much this year other than being a spot up deep shooter. Not the big-time versatile player I expected to see or we were lead to believe. Not even close. As of right now until he starts to show me other dimensions on a consistent basis this guy's nothing more than a slightly better version of Steve Novak from Marquette in my eyes. Larry Bird, Hedo Turkoglu, Toni Kukoc, even Detlef Schrempf -- I just don't see any of these comparisons at all. He requires improvement in just about ever area -- both in terms of improving his physicality and his skills. He's got the quality deep shooting touch and he's shown a surprising little knack for trying to block a shot (ask yourselves though, is that really that surprising for a man who's 6'11" anyway?) but other than that...Come on honestly guys, he's weak, slow, is not the passer I expected (forget any previous talk of this guy as a point-forward in the NBA right now), doesn't play inside at all (and some of you guys see him as a regular PF in this league???), is awkward as sin taking the ball to the basket (all I kept thinking when he posed for the camera after driving & throwing that dunk down on Roy Hibbert at the Garden was OK, let me see you do that again young fella. And you know what? He hasn't.)... Anyone catch the small on-the-court interview Craig Sager had with Gallo before the rookie/sophomore game? Sager was asking him about his style of play and basically Gallo conceded that he's always been a perimeter player and that the rest of his game is one big work-in-progress--that they're working on the rest in practice. Honest to God, that's what he said. This kid's got a ways to go before fulfilling expectations (mine at least) and who knows if he'll ever get there. If someone like Don Nelson offered up the right package starting with a guy like Steph Curry, I deal Gallo outta town faster than you can say "on the release." You all wanna laugh, Kevin Pittsnogle has resurfaced in the D-League recently. If they ever dealt Gallo in the right trade and wanted to immediately replace what he currently brings to the table (which is a big man out on the perimeter stretching the defense & shooting 3s) they could go get this kid right now for peanuts. 6'11, 250 lb. with a great long-range touch and unlike Gallo, he also has the ability to bang and rebound inside a little. Can even post up a little bit as well from what I remember. This guy played pretty well for West Virgina. He was clutch and had a great stroke from deep. And he had a little toughness to him. I'd say his shooting touch is just as good as Gallinari's for a guy that big. Right on par. Just sayin'... Hey I'm a patient guy and I'll continue to be patient with Gallo as there's some good things he's got to work with but in the meantime, I say no harm in floating his name out there to see what you can get...
Where I respectfully disagree:
- I don't see it as LeBron or bust. Never did. There's plenty of other things they can do, like Bosh this summer, then maybe bring Melo home next year, etc. Together, those two alone would make for one hell of a Plan B. Let's see what happens here. All I ask is for LeBron to make a quick decision on NY when the time comes. Please 'Bron, don't let us dangle out in the wind when other options will still be available to us. They have to basically tell the man, look, you're our #1 guy, always have been, but we need an answer. Hopefully he'll understand and oblige..Just as long as they don't throw money at the next best thing like a Joe Johnson when the top guys are off the board, I think we'll be alright. I don't see Donnie doing that anyway. You don't come this far to throw it all away on second and 3rd tier guys who want 1st tier money. I have faith they understand this. Without LeBron this thing's gonna take a little while longer and to me, that's OK. Patience is virtue...
- Firing D'Antoni and Walsh on the spot isn't the right move. Lord knows MDA's pissed me off quite a few times but the bottom line is the team's horrible and he doesn't have nearly enough to work with yet. Still I agree, he should've put more of an effort into incorporating the young fellas into the mix than he's done so far. We would've been much better off right now. So would Hill & Douglas. I even would've found a way to give the kid Landry some time here as well. Up to this point, what's done is done I guess -- MDA felt an obligation to play the vets up to this point for a few reasons. Hopefully now though, the youngsters will become part of the rotation in this second half... I still think D'Antoni's presence alone could help us hook a FA or two when the time comes. Like him or not and despite the team's lack of success since he's been here, players around the league still love the man, love his style of play and want to play for him. That's got to count for something. It does for me until proven otherwise. That was the first positive I thought of when I heard we were bringing him in..We'll have to see this summer. And I still think Walsh, even though his drafting record as a Knick exec is a little suspect so far (Gallo who the hell knows if he'll ever be as good as advertised, but I still think Hill can play), deserves some credit for getting rid of Crawford and Zach Randolph when he did. Regardless of how well each guy has played this year & what Donnie got for them at the time, the fact remains this franchise would've remained stuck in quicksand for the foreseeable future if he hadn't unloaded these guys. We weren't winning anything substantial with those two guys here. Bottom line and that's all that matters. Randolph & Crawford together equaled a .500 team, maybe not even that good, with little or no room for improvement... For the greater good, they had to be moved and I'm glad they were. I give Walsh a ton of credit there - I know it probably wasn't easy. If not for those moves, we're not even discussing rebuilding & 2010 right now. Those moves started the road to recovery. I'll continue to be patient with both guys for the time being, minor mistakes and all, because the overall philosophy still continues to look sound to me..
