Knicks' Darko wants out of New York
By MARC BERMAN

Last Updated: 4:27 PM, January 13, 2010

PHILADELPHIA -- Center Darko Milicic told The Post he is hoping his agent can work out an agreement with the Knicks to be released.

Milicic said he doesn't want to leave money on the table, but feels it's best for him and the Knicks to part ways. Milicic said he doesn't want to play for another team, but rest for next season when he plans to return to Europe.

Milicic, the Serbian 7-1 enigma, hasn't dressed since Dec. 15 and hasn't played since mid-November.

"I'm just trying to find some kind of solution," Milicic told The Post. "I'm not just looking for a solution for my end, but a solution that would be good for them and me.

"We are talking to see what we're going to do," Milicic said. "Me traveling with the team and being in the locker room, I would be the happiest guy if I'm home with my baby. The situation is not going to change. We all know that."

"I think for the team, why am I taking someone's spot right now?," Milicic added. "Why am I traveling, taking a spot? I'm taking someone's spot when I know I'm never going to play. I understand them, they want to save money so they can get another player. I understand that. But I'm not going to leave any money."

Milicic is in the final year of his contract, making $7.5M.

"If it was just me, I'd say bleep the money," he said. "But I'm thinking about my wife and baby, and you never know what can happen tomorrow."

When informed of Milicic's remarks about being so miserable he wants a release, Donnie Walsh agreed it is time they talk.

The Knicks could use a roster spot to sign a young D-League player to a 10-day deal, which is now permissible, and look at him as a prospect for next season. With Cuttino Mobley still on the roster, the Knicks don't have a roster spot open. They also can use an open roster spot in case there is a 2-for-1 trade.

"He's ours until he's not ours," Walsh said. "But I agree he's not happy about not playing and contributing, I think it comes to a point you have to talk about it."

Agent Marc Cornstein said he's aware of Milicic's position and figures buyout talks ultimately will take place.

"There's probably a better solution for the Knicks and Darko than someone of his age sitting in street clothes," Cornstein said.

Milicic said he's so beaten down from a series of NBA snubs, he doesn't want to play elsewhere this season.

"I told my agent, I'm not mentally or physically ready to play in any other city, to play for any other team," Milicic said. "I want to start from the beginning, go home, clear my head and get ready for next year in Europe."

He just doesn't have the skill, fortitude, or fortune to succeed in the NBA.

Going back home is probably his best bet.

Dumars seemed like a genius during the Pistons flourishing years, but this pick and Detroit's current status have quickly crippled his shrewdness as a GM.

Darko bring home MULTIPLE championships in Europe. He is a STAR. Believe that. The NBA? Just wasn't a good suit for him.

i think he could have helped this team if given a chance, but apparently either his game or his attitude did not appeal to MDA... dunno that trading Q Rich for him made much sense if we were never going to play him to begin with, but i guess u can't predict these kinds of things

But just letting Brickardson go was a breath of fresh air.

i thought Q Rich was a nice player off the bench... was 1 of the few players that actually showed he gave a sh!t for much of last season to me... he wasn't consistent, none of our players were, but he did add some useful skills to our rotation & fit this system quite well... certainly a better option to have than Bender or Landry... Larry Hughes is able to fill that role now, but MDA doesn't wanna play him now for some reason... i'm done with trying to reason why MDA plays certain guys over other guys at this point.

You won't play me, and I don't want to play for anyone else, but I want all my money?

I still don't understand why we never paly him at all. Surely he is at least serviceable? Don't know anything about his attitude etc, but I really did think the guy would work out for us when we got him.
TKF on Melo ::....he is a punk, a jerk, a self absorbed out of shape, self aggrandizing, unprofessional, volume chucking coach killing playoff loser!!

I can't agree with you on him actually giving it his all. Richardson's conditioning was God awful during his Knick tenure, and then he decides to lose weight when he gets moved. That tells me he didn't care too much while playing for New York.

You and me both, brother. You're getting money for nothing. STFU. If you don't like it, make a counteroffer.
Otherwise, shut your damn pie hole.

true, i agree w/u, he didn't give it his all every time... not many Knicks did... but he did at least seem to give a crap when the team was playing poorly last year & he did have some good games for us... i definitely think he could have been of much more use to us than Darko, Bender or Landry.

I was pulling for him to succeed.

Darko is moody, lazy, arrogant and a locker room cancer of the first kind.

He had fresh start under a coach who freed him from being restricted to the post, and a golden opportunity to work his way into the rotation.

I cannot get the image of him standing perfectly still during pre game warmups out of my head. Darko never made a move when a stray basketball bounced his way. As he stood near the left corner of the free throw line, a ball hit him in the leg. He picked it up and casually passed it, without moving a step, to another player. That is something I have never seen at any level of basketball. Ever.

It is a credit to the other Knicks players that they ignored his boorish act.

I will never forget that game this season when he came in and went hard at his defender, two times in a row, for the most beautiful hook shots I've ever seen in my life. So much potential, he had so much fire then. Where did it all go, Darko??
