"Donnie Walsh gave Danilo Gallinari a 30-minute DVD of highlights from Larry Bird's career intended to inspire the Knicks' young forward.

Gallinari watched the video more than 10 times, mesmerized by each play, pass and rebound.

In the Knicks' win over the Bobcats Thursday, Gallinari nailed a key three-point field goal in the closing seconds from two steps behind the top of the arc."

Via New York Times

Larry Bird was more than just his plays, passes and rebounds. He was driven like very few human beings, and there was a certain mental imbalance to him that I feel propelled him to inhuman levels. But he did play with Parish, McHale, Dennis Johnson, so who knows. But still, imagine? I'd be happy with a new Dirk Nowitzki, but imagine Gallo became the next Larry Bird. Well, you can always dream.

I don't care what people think. People are stupid. - Charles Barkley

A few weeks ago, I made a comment in one a post that Gallinari should not be traded because he could be the next Larry Bird. More than a few people commented back to me saying Gallo is not in Bird's class. Obviously right now he is not. Bird is a Legend. He carried Indiana State and The Celitcs for many years. My point was and still is, that Gallinari has a very similar skill set. Whether or not he can take it to Bird's level is to be seen. However, in the glimpses we have seen, we cannot say that he cannot. He knows how to play the game, he can shoot, he can pass, he can defend and he seems to have a killer instinct too.

Bird was a legend in his first NBA season. He was also 23. Gallinari is 21. He was a leader as a teenager and one a top Euro teen. I would be very happy to see him be a Dirk or a Bird. His game reminds me of Bird's game. Obviously he needs to step it up some more but I am not sure if that is him not being able to or if he is doing what he is told to do.

I was one of the first to liken Gallo to Bird and has nicknamed Gallo as Bird Lite. He might even exceed my expectations and become a Bird Medium

I just clicked the link to the fromthebaseline article, and they have a highlight vid of Bird. Have to admit its the first time i've seen him, and its shocking how similar Gallo and Bird are moving. Both have that lanky, stiff dribbling and running. Funny thing for shure

man, what is scary is that where he hit that last three from, remember? that's within his casual range. that means you gotta be on him 5 feet behind the line, that's 5 extra feet of being out of the red zone.

The only other player right now in the league that has the same consistent range as Gallo from 3pt range is Jesus Shuttleworth. Gallo can drain the 3 from anywhere.

Bird was like 23 in the famous NCAA final game. Gallo is still 2 years younger. Imagine him in college now with a mid-major? Kid would be lighing it up for 40 a nite!

Before we bukkake our pants i'd put wish his ceiling at Ginobli type player who really is/was a special player on championship teams.

Bird was a special player but what made him special was he did it on the biggest stages and the most critical times. LEading teams in college and in the pro's to championships is really what sets him apart. Injury aside, Larry was not that much better than KVH but Larry got the job done at most critical times. "BIrd stole the ball, bird stole the ball" was epic! Bird was not athletic like KVH or many many others but had crazy fundamentals to execute. He made the game look easy. Gallo in fact looks to be more athletic even at this early age but his (and all young players) career will really take off as his fundamentals keep getting better.

They are giving him the ball now and not hiding him in the corner like the beginning of the season.

Okay....I root for Gallo as much as anyone on this board, but comparing him to Bird, who is one of the 10 best players to ever play the game is a bit much. This is why players turn out to be busts in the eyes of most because we overrate very good players and compare them to alltimers.

In his peak years, Bird was putting up 28 pts 10 RBS and 6 asst . Basically, Bird was putting up Lebron numbers on a nightly bases and we all know he wasn't nearly as athletic as Lebron. Beyond the stats, Bird had that special drive that only the elite athletes have. Hard to say if Gallo has that but that trait is very rare. Its what seperates the alltimers, from the good players. Bird essetially was point forward, other than Lebron, never saw a better passing forward and he was a monster on the boards. Bird had an off the charts BB IQ. For those who never seen Bird, I suggest you try to get your hands on actual games....highlights barely scratch the surface of the things Birds did for his team. He also made the Jared Jeffries plays for his team...the little plays that dont show up in the stat sheets. I can go on and on about Bird...And keep in mind, I grew up a Knick fan and hated Boston, but I admired the way he played.

I watched Bird growing up too. I hated the Celtics but rooted for Bird. He was a likable assassin.

What I see in the video and remember is that Bird was much more aggressive than Gallinari is now. If Gallinari can up that intensity level and NOT settle for standing in the corner and getting looked off, then he can be great. As great as Bird? No. Bird is one of a kind, but he can be Bird-like. The potential lies with him. If he works hard and improves like Lee has worked to improve, then Gallo will be fine.

Yehhh... not romatic movie material... but will be good for porn.
Seriously Bird is one of the greats which used as measuring stick for upcoming talents.
Anybody (and Galo included) who has a glimpse of Birds game is already an asset and a promise.
