Option 1. Banking our entire future on the hope that great championship level players will come in 1 free agency period, sure. What can possibly go wrong with that?

Option 2. Tank, get a high draft pick, and then sign someone to the team. In that way we can have two possibly championship level players at a relatively low cost. But oh no Option 1 is obviously the best way to go right

This thinking will backfire on us entirely this summer. We have a horrible team now and whoever wants to come here this summer is not going to be good enough to get us a championship. We are going to end up being perennial playoff losers... just like the Suns, just like the Pacers. But dont take my word for it. Watch as the next few years unfolds yet again into another disaster of team management, failed hopes, and horrible basketball. But hey everything is ok right?

It is better to be a realistic thinker than a lemming. Knicks fans have short memories and forgot how we ended up with Allan Houston eating up the whole cap for 500 years. And it looks like we are on our way there again. Meanwhile Dolan laughs all the way to the bank selling out the garden with a first-round exit team.

"Donnie Walsh has complete autonomy!"
"Everything Mike D'Antoni does is good!"

Fool me once, shame on me.
Fool me twice, shame on you.
Fool me 3,000 times with the same sh!t over and over again...just call me your standard Knicks fan, thank you sir.

Sub, we knew going into this that we had to give up either last year's or this year's #1 pick.

We also knew that we would have major capspace in 2010, and (assuming we don't trade Curry/Jeffries) again in 2011.

So, we take the pain that was necessary in clearing away Isaiah's mess, hope to pick up two max FA's by the offseason of 2011, and if not, we build going forward through the draft.

I think this is the only option we had, given the capspace hell we were in.

Not being difficult mark but I am just reposting what I had put up earlier just for the record:

Yes, and on the surface that seems ok. But here is the problem with that mark. If we do sign a marginal player we will not be "horrible" enough next year to get a good draft position. Without a good, low, draft position we will not be able to draft championship level talent. It will keep us in the middle of the road so to speak when what we really want is to either be completely to the left side of the road or all the way to the right. We want to either be championship winners or so bad that we have to get a good pick.

Again, Sub, I agree that this is a risk.

I just don't see what our other options are.

Yes, yes, we are so foolish for trying to start over properly. Definitely should have kept Zach and Craw and Marbs, recycled expirings, and thrown in picks. Other team malcontents on gigantic contracts should be stockpiled indefinitely until it works. MLEs are all we need to glue a team of overpaid misfits together. In Isiah We Trust.

Please...wake up people. We weren't meant to be good this year. This was the way to go. Tearing down a team is never pretty. It has to be done. Bitch and moan next year this time if you must. To do so today and call for changes, or wanting a do-over on tearing it down, just makes no sense at all. You've forgotten recent history then.

The Knicks roster isn't horrible despite Walsh's cap clearing moves. Gallo, TD, Chandler once he gets back, and Hill are all exciting young players. Lee, Nate, Al, and Hughes all have experienced alot of personal success in the league. Darko can definitely fill a role. The roster is not made up of knuckleheads. The only guy who is known as a malcontent is Hughes and that has not come up in NY. The Knicks should not be 1-9. They may not have a shot at the eigth seed but they should be playing much better and their results should be more positive. D'Antoni is a mess. He is inept and almost seems incompetent. His biggest asset at this point is that he is not a sociopath like the previous coach. His system is not working and he does not appear willing to change or modify it. The chance of him ever having three guys like Nash, Marion, and Stoudamire in their prime is not very good. I believe that Crispino or Clyde said that every Knick opponent has shot over fifty percent from the field. As a coach you have to recognize that your team does not have much of a chance to win if your opponent shoots fifty percent or higher from the field.

Kept Zach Craw and Marbs, recycled expirings, thrown in picks, in Isiah we trust?? Dude, did you even read what I posted? This isnt about doing things Isiah's way. If you remember correctly I was as much against Isiah as anybody. That is because he wanted to build this team through free agency which is in effect the same thing Walsh is trying to do now. The only difference is Walsh is trying to get under the cap to do it. I submit to you that this is the wrong way to start building a team. You have to start with the draft.

Building a contender through via free agency on a team like this is asking way, way too much.

At this point, I'd be satisfied if we acquired free agents that made us a perennial playoff team year after year.

The Knicks really are good I swear...

Try to watch the next Knicks game as if you were watching a college basketball where there isn't a draft/free agency/salary cap to keep things even. The tendency is to watch the Knicks with the assumption that they should be competitive because they're NBA players, but if you look at it objectively, before the teams even tip the ball we're basically beaten. We've got a tiny white dude at center who the announcers like to say plays a "cerebral" game. We've got a tiny shooting guard who tries real hard. We've got the Euro-kid with the great story and ties to the organization and the raw talent guys who might be able to show the big time schools a thing or two in three years. The other teams look like North Carolina if you take the blinders off. Just go man for man, how can Douglas possibly compete with Joe Johnson? How can Chandler possibly compete with Josh Smith? How can David Lee possibly compete with Al Horford? How can Gallo compete with Marvin Williams? Teague/NewCraw vs Duhon?

Honestly I'm surprised sometimes that we don't get beat by 50.

The talk of MikeD's system being flawed... that's really because the players are terribly skilled. He did an amazing job keeping us competitive last year. I think this year the chickens have finaly come home to roost.

Should he have more flexability? Sure... but what's the point? The players aren't even running the system as is, so its hard to even judge what's working and what's not.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

They are not saving all this cap space for Alan Houston type of player. If they are to spend there cap space it will be on a Lebron, Wade type of player. If they do sign someone it won't be someone that would eat up a lot of that cap so that we have a lot of room avaiable. Plus more cap coming off in 2011.

Having cap space isn't just about signing free agents.

We can make trades taking on salary and expiring contracts for draft picks. Jeff Foster, Marco Jaric, Morris Peterson, Dampier, Peja, Dalembert, Reggie Evans, Marcus Banks, Kenyon Martin etc.. are other players who fit this mold that we could take off teams hands for draft picks or prospects to build the team.

Say we took on Dalembert's contract for a Philly 2010 first rd pick and a future first. Giving Philly a 12mil trade exception and saving Philly from paying 24mil since they would be paying 12mil in luxury for his contract. If the salary cap is at 50mil, our projected cap is at 27.3 leaving us with 22.7. If the cap ends up being 53mil then we would have 25mil available. Under the 50mil cap restriction we would have 10mil left over in that Dalembert deal to do another deal like taking on Jeff Foster's contract from Indy. Foster makes 6.6mil. Indy is projected to be 12mil over the cap. We would save Indy about 13mil in luxury tax as well as give them a 6.6 trade exception. We could ask for there 2nd in 2010 and a future first.

Then in 2011 Dalembert, Foster, Curry, and Jeffries contracts would all expire giving us all our cap space back. Plus we keep our lottery pick that yr if we really suck as well as add draft picks or prospects to keep adding to the core of Gallo, Chandler, Hill, Douglas.

So even if NO big name free agent were to sign with us in 2010, the flexibility of having cap space opens up doors to stock piling more and more assets which fill eventually could be a team loaded with talent, star free agent pickup or not.

This thinking will backfire on us entirely this summer. We have a horrible team now and whoever wants to come here this summer is not going to be good enough to get us a championship. It's scary how everyone had way too much cool aid to see the truth. Any idiot could have seen Lebron James was not going to come hear. Any fool knows that trying to build a team first from free agency is the wrong plan to build a team with. How dumb of the Knicks to try this.

Congratulations to the Miami heat who have first started with the draft by getting Wade and then building around him to get a championship... and now doing by signing more free agents are able to now compete for more championships.
