Allen Iverson is already unhappy with his role in Memphis.

He made his season debut on Monday after missing time with a hamstring injury.

Iverson played 18 minutes in the team's overtime loss to the Kings, scoring 11 points.

"I had no problems (with the hamstring). I had a problem with my butt sitting on that bench for so long," Iverson told the Memphis Commercial Appeal.

When a reporter suggested that the Grizzlies' bench needed Iverson's scoring punch, he disagreed.

"No. I'm not a bench player. I'm not a sixth man," Iverson added. 'Look at my resume and that'll show I'm not a sixth man. I don't think it has anything to do with me being selfish. It's just who I am. I don't want to change what gave me all the success that I've had since I've been in this league. I'm not a sixth man. And that's that."

Chris Wallace proves again he's the worst GM in the league.

i think AI's right, he's not a 6th man... he still got game to start in this league... he signed for little money w/a team like MEM & i'm sure he thought he could get playing time there... Mike Conley is not better than AI, i'm sorry.

Sometime I wonder about these clubs and players...Did Ivo just sign a contract without asking what his role would be?? Did Memphis offer the contract without discussing what they expect from Iverson? This stuff happens way to often in Sports.

But I do agree with TMS...AI is still a talent and better than anyone they have in that team

Of course he's right, but Wallace had to know what his coaches intentions were in regards to AI. We all knew AI wouldnt accept a bench role so why'd the Grizz sign him?

or maybe he didn't know what his coaches' intentions were? i don't see any way he woulda signed AI knowing his coach had no intentions of starting him.

These guys are unbelievable. You got booted from Denver and they took off in the standings. You went to Detroit and they tanked. You got no action in the offseason, and now you're on one of the worst teams in the league, the one team that would give you a chance at redemption and this is your response after your first game back?

Some dudes will just keep shouting a falsehood just so that they don't have to accept the real truth.

AI... this is who you are. Embrace it.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

i'd embrace AI if he came to the Knicks... he's better than any of the guards we have.

Unless you're a Laker fan. Then he's awesome for running their farm system.

Yeah I don't understand. There is no way I sign iverson without either (a) getting his assurance he can accept coming off the bench or (b) getting assurances from the coach that iverson will start. There is no excuse for this to not already have been handled.

It's going to be so fun watching the Grizz implode this season.

They are actually looking good...Zach had 30/16 the other day and the rest of the crew has been really good too...Marc Gasol is actually one of the top fantasy guys early in the season....guys are playing some good ball.....why the hell did they sign Iverson???

Iverson deserves to start and he should start straight up, but Memphis already have Conley and OJ Mayo...no need for Iverson. Its just dumb....The Knicks don't need Iverson right now either unless he wanted to be the point guard and Iverson is too proud to change anything about his game...even though Iverson becoming Tiny Achibald makes more sense as for as the state of his career.....with that said I'd trade for Iverson only under those conditions.

Agreed, but there is no reason that Iverson can't keep his mouth shut and not use the press to spout off.

And I don't care how good he is- he is not going to be the future of that franchise, so I would not necessarily play him over Conley or take too much time away from Mayo. He is not the kind of player who will help a young team grow as a team. It would be better for Memphis to win 20-25 games, get a decent draft pick, and have Mayo and Conley get as much time together as possible, than to win about 35, not get as good of a pick while at the same time missing the playoffs, and retarding the growth of your younger players.

If it is a money thing- putting fannies in the seats, that is another thing altogether. If Memphis has to do that to survive, then Iverson should get more time, but you have to weigh the extra $$ against the negative influence his being in the lineup will have on other players.

he's a 1st ballot HOFer playing backup to Mike Conley... if i were him i'd be pissed about that too... i think it's fair to assume he didn't sign w/MEM thinking he'd be coming off the bench... if MEM didn't plan on making AI a featured part of their offense then they shouldn't have signed him... everyone knows that's the type of game he plays... if AI wanted to be a backup he woulda signed w/a championship contender like San Antonio to win a ring, but his priority right now is in raising his value again & signing 1 last contract deal... he can't do that on the bench.

i agree with Swish FM i mean, did AI not talk to the coach and mgmt to see what his role would be? this stuff is just comical at this point. i've always been an AI apologist and defended him, but he's writing a sad last chapter of his career. if he was who he says he was he would've signed a deal with san antonio or LA for the vet minimum and won a chip.

TMS, why does the guy need 1 last deal? he's made well over $100 million over the course of his career, his goal should be to win a championship, no? instead he signs with the grizzlies and literally game 1 he's already complaining. sad stuff. i honestly wouldn't be surprised if he retired at midseason and had enough.

usually these guys want to "win" and willing to come off the bench to get some ring. He wanted money and playing time. He said God told him to go to memphis. Problem is a winning team don't want him cuz he has not shown a game that can blend well with others.

He may have game, but I am really glad DW wasn't even a little bit tempted. The guy is still a prima-dona, even way past his prime.
