Timberwolves trading rights to Rubio

By Mark J. Miller

The Minnesota Timberwolves spent a lot of time and money trying to get Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio to come play for them after the team drafted him fifth overall this past summer. Team bigwig David Kahn flew over to Spain a few times and tried to work out some sort of crazy buyout but obviously nothing ever worked out and Rubio is now playing for FC Barcelona.

Rubio is still saying he wants to play in the NBA someday. Presumably that's what he intended when he declared himself for this year's draft, too, and that didn't seem to work out. The Wolves aren't bothering themselves to picture him in their jersey anytime soon and it appears that the team will try and trade the rights to the guard before next year's NBA draft, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

It isn't expected that the team would get much in return on such a deal since most teams that have any interest in Rubio (read: the New York Knicks) don't want to get involved in any long-term contract negotiations before the free-agent signing period starts next summer when the All-Star buffet opens up for NBA general managers.

I still really hope we get Rubio. Yeah, he's unproven, but I really like what I saw from him in the Olympics. I hope we can work this out.

If the Knicks feel that highly of him--offer a reasonable asset like Wilson Chandler--that's what they could've had for him anyway. That would also knock off two mm off the cap next year. But the Knicks wont do it--they'll offer them a 2nd round pick in 2019 for Rubio or think that Chandler is the second coming of Tracy Mcgrady when in reality he is a fair athletic player with reasonable skills and what looks like a poor basketball IQ. I'll be honest not one Knick fan would care if the Knicks traded Wilson C for Rubio and the Knicks wouldn't win any more or any less without him.

I say shake this thing up if they truly believe--follow your inclinations. Atleast there would be some hope that he would develop in two years.

This is such a hard team to root for recently--I mean 15 other teams went for cap space--it's like we are basking in the accomplishment of nothing. We have an old retread of a GM who won't take risks and retreads from Toronto and Orlando running this team.

We should not shake this thing up... It will be going to fall apart and disappear. What we will root for then - Nets?

The Wolves wanting to trade Rubio is about as obvious as Walsh wanting to get Lebron. Kahn took a gamble and it blew up in his face. Now they need to move Rubio and will probably get at least a 1st round pick for him. The Wolves do need a SF and we have plenty of those. I would scout Rubio this year and if he looks legit, I would trade Chandler for him. Unlike BRIGGS, I really like Chandler's game but a star PG is a star PG. If you have a chance to get one, you have to go for it.

pg?

can i again be on record as saying it is tiresome to see folks compare players based on race, nationality, and other stereotypes...

other the reasons listed, which aren't really much reasons as much as coincidence, rubio not being in the nba right now vs. vujanic are completely different situations.

we sure could use someone with his skills.

Almost anybody is better than Duhon. Johnny Flynn led his team from 16 pts back to a win in his first game playing against Devin Harris! Duhon gets schooled by Harris.

Duhon seems like he just doesn't want to anymore. That's going to be a problem all year.

Rubio... I don't see how we get him. Also, isn't his buyout clause for two years from now? We can't trade that pick either due to NBA rules.

It would have to be a Chandler for Rubio deal to make sense at all. Unfortunately with Walsh's botched picks, he's going to have to trade one of Isiah's to get a deal done.

Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

I'd do that trade right now.

Yes- it hurts us this year, but I can accept that & handing over a high pick to Utah, because we can pull out an Isiah - Rubio is like our 2010 draft pick.

It would be more like an extra 2011 draft pick. I don't think he has an option to leave Spain in 2010.

well, i dont think we can trade 2 1st round draft picks in as many consecutive years so we wont trade out 2011 pick for rubio. i dont know about chandler because i like him and think he will be a good player. but if rubio is going to be a legit all star pg, then we have no choice. that would also entice free agents in 2010 and 2011 to come here playing with great pgs because duhon isnt doing it. i picked him for my fantasy team because i needed assist but i think i made a mistake.

Chandler needs to show some serious signs of improvement to make him worth keeping if Rubio is on the table. Im starting to sour on the idea of him as a long term piece of this team moving forward

I think right now, we can probably get the pick with Wilson.
