Al Harrington, on the other hand, looked like he was ready to go. He even had a basketball at his table, ready to jump out of his seat and into a drill at a moment's notice. Big Al looks lean, but he says he actually gained eight pounds from last season. It's just been reconfigured. He comes in at 260 pounds after an offseason that involved something new to his trainig regimen.

"I never really lift weights, but I lifted weights this year eight straight weeks, no basketball," Harrington said.

He started in mid-June and went through July pumping iron in a two-a-day schedule. Now he finds himself far more explosive than he was last season and feeling quicker.

"It's crazy, I thought you had to lose weight to feel quicker," he said. "But I'm just stronger. I can't wait to get on the court."

I always thought he was in outstanding shape and even somewhat jacked. He never lifts? Or is he just underexhagerating and really meant "Yeah, I never really lifted THAT MUCH."

Crazy times.

Some people don't believe in weights and just go off the basketball conditioning drills they always did. Calisthenics, running, plyometrics.....

It is hard to believe al harrington didn't lift weights in the past though. Its also hard to believe how out Of shape eddy curry is. Anyway eddy curry should have trained with harrington this off season

It is great that he did some weightlifting. He is probably going to be playing alot of PF, so he needs to increase his strength.

Hersel Walker never lifted weights either. It doesnt mean he's not exercising.

Start a regimine of push ups, pull ups, sprints and hitting a heavy bag and do two a days and I promise you will get jacked too.

Al is naturally strong. He was giving it to dwight Howard this year. He does look like his legs give out on him when he drives. I expect him to finish stronger this year. Love to hear guys commiting theirselves

It may hurt it in the fact that he didn't shoot while lifting, so he may have an adjustment period, but having a strong upper body can only help your shot in the long run, if you were already a good shooter.

I need too. For one reason or another my booze consumption has painfully increased and my exercise level dropped. Gone are the days of resting for 4 months then hitting it hard in spring training. Too old now... got to stay lean and strong all year or its over

Walker had a legendary regimen of pushups and other calisthenics.

Maybe Al will be a banger this year. That would help us a lot if he had more of a high-low game.
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

Yeah... this is essentially the work out I used in New Orleans and I was in the best shape of my life.

My work out was:
Stretch
jog
3-9 simulated rounds (more as I got in better shape, simulated round meaning hit the bag as hard as possible for 3 minutes then one minute of rest--next round)
speed bag
double end
pull ups
push ups
sit ups
leg lifts
wall sit
wind sprints
bike

that's what worked for me and I started doing this after I read an article in SI about Kendall Gill's workout when he tried to make it as a boxer at 36+

Walker is also intriguing for being one of the few pro football players to become successful without the use of free weight training. Rather than a heavy weight room regimen, Walker used bodyweight exercise, calisthenics, and conditioning. He remains to this day an oddity in the pro football world. He has been said to do hundreds of pushups and situps daily, rather than lift weights, while maintining extremely low body fat.
