Knicks will sign Nate Robinson to one-year deal
September 23, 2009 By ALAN HAHN

The Knicks appear to have come to terms with at least one of their two restricted free agents less than a week before training camp opens in Saratoga.

Nate Robinson has accepted a one-year contract offer, a source told Newsday Wednesday morning. The contract is for more than Robinson's qualifying offer of $2.9 million and will include performance bonuses. Because it is a one-year deal, Robinson has a right to veto any trade.

The team is currently still in negotiations with its other restricted free agent, David Lee, who is also expected to take a one-year deal for above his qualifying offer of $2.6 million.

The 5-9 Robinson, who averaged a career-best 17.2 points per game last season and saw his popularity rise around the NBA after he captured his second Slam Dunk title, told Knicks president Donnie Walsh that he wanted to remain in New York and had no interest in seeking offer sheets from other teams. As a restricted free agent, the Knicks would have had seven days to match any offer made to Robinson.

He will be an unrestricted free agent next summer, but his salary will still have some impact on the Knicks' salary cap budget in 2010 because of an NBA stipulation known as a "cap hold". If his salary is more than half of the league average, Robinson is slotted into the 2010-11 budget at one-and-a-half times his salary until he signs a new deal or if the Knicks opt to waive his Larry Bird Rights, which allow a team to exceed the salary cap to resign a player.

Good job. Hopefully the salary is maybe 4 million or something like that, so that the stupid cap hold rule isn't in effect.

Is $4 mil the league average?
Alan Hahn: Nate Robinson has been on a ridonkulous scoring tear lately (remember when he couldn't hit Jerome James with a Big Mac in early January?)

It's usually somewhere between 4.5 and 5.5 or something like that, correct?

I figured give him just under and those performance incentives will help work things out for him, money wise.

basically, nate's cap hold will probably be 1.5 times what he signs at. but if he had taken the $2.9M QO, his cap hold would have been 3 times $2.9M, so either way, he's going to have a cap hold in the $6M to $8M range. hopefully if it's the 1.5 rule and he signs for around $4M, his cap hold will only be about $6M as i understand it. so, a smaller caphold this way. we'll still probably have to renounce him, unless we somehow wind up signing and trading for a free agent as Toronto did with Hedo.

Why be so quick to do that? Why not just go quickly after the big names first and if you get a bite, then renounce his rights. If not, then resign Nate and Lee.

Those free agents are most likely going to land deals within' a week or two, and maybe not even so it's not like there will be a waiting game for Lee and Nate.

That it, unless there is a rule that you have a deadline to decide whether you want to renounce their rights or not, which I have not heard of such a rule.

Either way, if you don't get a free agent next Summer, wait the next year to get Melo after Curry and JJ have been cleared.

very glad. Love the way his game is maturing. I think year 2 under MDA he's poised for a breakout season (if 17+ ppg for a backup isnt breakout).

I see him as the best backup PG and best offensive player off the bench. Great 6th man and his late game play won us several games

Even though it'd be the smallest backcourt in history, Nate and Douglas could seriously get up and down the court in a hurry.

Nate and Sun Yue would be interesting also. They could switch on defense allowing N8 to cover faster guards and Yue on bigger 2's

That's a point I was making in the Sun Yue thread. I'd keep him around just for the flexibility his game and size would give us. He doesn't have to be spectacular to have a role on this team. We already know he's got great passing and ball handling skills. So you could make the lineup less undersized by playin Sun and Nate. I hope he has improved enough to stick.

wilson can cover bigger SGs, too. there's no way Sun Yue makes this team.

Forget money wise, I hope the incentives helps him mature and he becomes a better ball player, cause the kid has an enormous amount of talent for his size he's (hands down) the most athletic player probably in the history of the league.

Hahn now saying a Robinson deal has been put on hold for the time being but seems imminent. Also it looks like they may have gotten Nate to waive that no trade right. Or maybe that's what's holding things up. If we can get Nate and maybe even Lee back on 1-yr. deal minus their veto power, that's a homerun.

I'm glad Nate is still a Knicks. Talent like us you don't give up on. Like fish said dude was doing like 17/4/4....mostly off the bench. Losing team or not he put in work and single handedly carried the knicks a lot on offense.

Anyway, I would kill to see these guys in practice. Competition must be crazy.
