"If you go back to the last time that we had significant (cap) room," said Riley, "we were able to sign Alonzo Mourning, Juwan Howard, P.J. Brown, Dan Majerle and Tim Hardaway, all in one year. Why do I want to take a big chunk of money and give it to one guy? Why wouldn't I want to spread it around to get two or three starters that fit better?"

Back we go, then, to the waiting game, which is so much tougher for a star to master than the game of basketball.

one one hand, you have the city of miami...one that has a franchise caliber talent in dwayne wade. they are putting all their eggs in the 2010 free agent market to add talent and get wade to re-sign.

on the other hand, you have the city of toronto...one that has a franchise caliber talent in chris bosh. they too need to re-sign their franchise player but they are not putting all their eggs in the 2010 free agent market.

it will be interesting to see what happens with both franchises next offseason as they are in diametric opposite ends of the 2010 spectrum...

Bosh signs with the Knicks, LeBron follows. Toronto falls.

I think it would play out a little better if both cities were equal attractions for free agents. TOR and CLE have to sign players now to convince their max players to stay, so it's a strategy born out of necessity rather than just 2 franchises choosing to build in completely opposite ways.

this is a fair point. miami is a prime free agent destination as there's no media/fan pressure, nice weather, nice women and low taxes.

I understand that Toronto has an extensive underground city system, with many shops, tunnels, and stuff. Or was it Montreal. Really, I would pick Montreal over Miami and Toronto. I've never been to Montreal, but I like the underground city idea.

That's what I've been saying all along. And neither is Amare, for the record.

These guys will be great role players on championship teams in 2018, but please, DW, don't bring any of them here as the #1 stars. Bosh isn't half the player Ewing was, and where did Patrick get us?

The only franchise players in the NBA:

Bryant
James
Wade
Howard
Roy
Paul (this one is arguable)

How is it ridiculous? Bosh, Amare are all extra-talented role players. They don't possess the mental fortitude or capacity to lead a team to victory.

I would cut down JrZhUstLa's list a little more-- taking Roy and Paul off.

It means they lack the winning brain. If they had winning brains, they would have shown this to be true already. They have not. They have floundered, like the fish, and now they expect HUGE contracts, and to be #1 go-to guys. Sorry Bosh and Amare, it doesn't work like that. It would, if Isiah was comissioner, but he's not. Prudent GMs will deny you your unearned fortunes.

Taxes in Toronto will deter FAs from signing with the Raptors. Miami is a diff animal. You have DWade, Riley and the Miami landscape to attract players. Although, Heat fans are a little fickle and does not really support their team regularly.

This is where cities like NY, LA, CHI and BOS have advantages over other NBA cities.

It's ridiculous by virtue of not including Duncan.

If ObamaCare passes, taxes in Toronto will seem like a joke.

No, I am. I mean, if i want private insurance, I can pay for it. But I still have to pay in ObamaCare. How is that fair? No thanks on keeping worthless individuals alive, the ones that don't contribute, but rather destroy, our society. Thank you, thank you very much. Keep that in mind.
