Rubio trade with Knicks in the works?
Posted on August 31st, 2009 – 8:29 PM
By Jerry Zgoda
News just broke tonight that Ricky Rubio is poised to sign with Barcelona, but is that really it?

Might the Wolves be about to deal the Spanish point guard, perhaps to the New York Knicks, which Rubio’s parents and representatives have wanted all along?

A league source tells me there’s plenty of talk floating that the Knicks again are pushing hard to deal for Rubio — probably with an assist from agent Dan Fegan — and there’s word of a Rubio for restricted free agent David Lee, Nate Robinson and a No. 1 pick deal.

That’d give the Wolves three power forward types, wouldn’t it? But with David Kahn, anything could be possible.

Of course, the Wolves would have to give back some sizable salaries to make the deal work (with the Knicks signing and then trading Lee), but they do have Brian Cardinal and Mark Blount, to name two contracts that total $14 million plus.

The Rubio-to-Barcelona thing still may be just the latest threat to get Rubio to a market where endorsements presumably will pay most of that big buyout.

Stayed tuned.

Man, if that's true I guess you gotta do it. Get Rubio for Lee, Nate and a future #1? No Chandler, Hill, Gallo, etc..?? Wow. And we'd get two expiring deals in Cardinal & Blount to work with - so the plan to have the cap in order for 2010 & beyond is still intact. I tell ya, I haven't been that high on Rubio up to this point, but I'd really have to think long and hard about this one. I think you gotta do it. Getting a big pass-first PG talent like Rubio might really increase our chances of getting LeBron to come here...

I mean this can't be right, can it? For Minny, I really don't see how Lee fits in with Kevin Love there (and at around $9 mil. per)? Unless they consider him a good backup for Jefferson & Love where all 3 get big minutes and split the workload at the 4 & 5 (that actually is a nice 3-man rotation for the 2 big spots, even though there isn't a legit center among them)... I could see Nate as a little better fit (they really don't have a true 2-guard other than rookie Wayne Ellington right now). As for us, it's really a no-brainer -- we unload Lee and Nate, two players our own coach probably considers a bit overrated. Plus, we effectively replaced both with younger players (maybe even better players) with Hill & Douglas anyway. And if we ever got LeBron on board, that future 1st rounder won't be worth nearly as much...

I think it will Finestrg....It's clear Rubio wants to be here now.
Kahn tried calling his bluff and he lost.
Rubio has all the cards...he's young which is the most important so he has time to wait this out.
Kahn needs to trade this kid while he can.

Hope this is true!

If Rubio signs that 2 year deal, would there be a buyout involved so he can possibly not even play there?

Wow, did you guys read some of the Minnesota fans' comments that follow the article? I don't think they'd approve of that deal too much to say the least. Jesus, tell us what you really think of Lee and Nate fellas.. LOL!!

Hahn just shot the rumor down by saying he called 3 sources and they all shot it down.
My question is...did they say it won't happen or is it they just haven't heard about it yet?

Thank God for the Yankees playing great, the NFL about to start and even the Undertaker returning to SmackDown, because its been a no-show offseason for the Knicks. It may be for their best, but man has this been a boring offseason?

Don't forget now, say we pulled this trade off, now we'd have to come up with that buyout money, something David Kahn apparently wasn't able to do. Originally close to $8 million dollars, Rubio's former team, DKV Joventut, has now agreed to trade his rights to FC Barcelona and accept a lower buyout total of $5.8 million dollars. That's still a lot of money but doable for FC Barcelona as there doesn't seem to be any rules in place to prohibit such a transaction in that league. Well, that Europe. The NBA is a different ball game - the NBA only allows teams to spend $500,000 towards a player's buyout, then the player has to come up with the rest on his own somehow. It's all spelled out nicely in this ESPN article, including some creative ways Minnesota was trying to come up with the buyout money. My question is, if Minny couldn't do it, how could we? We'd have to structure something similar to what Kahn was gunning for, something involving revenue/endorsement givebacks. Check out the ESPN article & video on this topic here:

What Stern wants, he can arrange as far as making it worth DKV's while. The NBA has more hoops marketing muscle than any other entity. This rumor may not have leg, but I am not ready to give up on it yet.

Papabear Says
Minny knew that Rubio wanted no parts of them and 2 years from now Rubio won't come to Minny. He will make them trade him to New York but if I was the starting point guard for Minny right now i would ask to be traded because they are telling him that they are waiting for Rubio and he has no future in Minny after 2 years.

Raw is cool, but dont be staying at home on no friday nights to watch rasslin. Go out and have promiscuous sex or get robbed by knife point. There is a whole world out there, family!

As far as the thread, I'm getting tired of these stupid ass rumors dog. And just playing with the rumor who the hell are Minnesota fans to start getting all indignant about Lee and Nate. Rubio dont want to play for ya'll. Nobody wants to play for you. You suck. Lee and Nate are sure as hell better than nothing and outside of Al Jefferson they would be the two best players on the team. Timberfools fans trying to get all brave. haha.
