With overseas team

Ricky Rubio, the 5th pick of the Minnesota Timberwolves in this year's draft, has agreed to terms on a contract with Regal Barcelona.

The Spanish team will pay a buyout of 3.7 million Euros, approximately $5.3 million, to Rubio's previous team, Joventut.

Rubio will sign a six-year agreement that contains an affordable buyout in 2011.

Notice it says..."will sign"
Could this be another attempt by RR"s people to try to get Kahn to trade his rights?

Donnie kept his cards, now lets see what Kahn is holding.

His problem is he is transparent.

Rubio's camp has played this very well creating demand, incentive and a sense of urgency.

Kahn only represents the will of his owner, not what he thinks.

Rubio wants to be in NY. I thought the League wants the kid in NY and thats why I thought it would happen.

Maybe these conspiricies really don't exist. Rubio is good business for the NBA if he is NY.

Im not saying we rape and fleece Minny, nor they us!

Just a good deal that kahn can sell to his city and one that pays off big time down the road. If the kid is the real deal, we can afford the price.

Even though it wasn't publicly stated we all know that Rubio does not want Minny (but who does?). We don't have much in the way of assets for Rubio, but I wonder if we could somehow get him from Minny without being raped? (Which Walsh would never do anyway.)

The longer this drags on the worse Hahn is looking. Minny fans say they have an asset but they are missing the point, Rubio doesn't want to play there. You can't just trade his rights cause he may not want to sign and that right there is hope for us. We can probably make a decent deal considering that. Rubio's value is not as high as Minny fans think because of the uncertainty of him playing for many teams.

You just know that Stern would love to get Rubio to NY (or another big market), just hope it can happen.

Yeah, this round of Poker is almost finished, let's see what Hahn is holding. Rubio is going to go to some NBA team in two years on a rookie salary but will be able to make triple that in Europe. Things don't exactly get easier.

Do you think Minny's owner told him to draft Rubio, or that Kahn sold his owner, saying he was best available, and even if he did not sign, he could be traded for value?

I guess Minny can wait to turn Rubio into something more valuable - but what happens if he stinks it up overseas this year, or gets hurt- I doubt we'd offer anything valuable up ourselves, no matter how Eurocrazed MDA is.

Minny traded Mike Miller and Foye for Rubio...How do they justify any trade to NY?

They need to be fined by the league just for being stupid. They drafted Flynn...Flynn is gonna be damn good by himself. They shoulda drafted Hill or a shooting guard with that Rubio pick. It's a damn shame....what adds insult to injury? they when on to draft a total of 5 point guards in the 2009 draft. Fine these bastards!!! Retract them!!! Nobody wants to play there. It's just a damn shame.

Well, in one sense, we could give Minny something now for Rubio since they know he will not be available for 2 years, but that means we have to wait on him. I think any Rubio trade is dead at this point.

If Rubio has not signed yet,

I think a core of Hill (just a few picks below the 5) and Nate is actually doable.

Or

DLee and we take back an expiring (if they have one) with rubio. Give them Nate if we must.

Or

Cheap contract Chandler with Nate.

No, not Gallo. Im not saying he is "untouchable" but we don't know if Rickey is a franchise player and Gallo's skill set for his size is intriging enough for me as a fan to see him play and what he can develope into. Since we can only profile him to other white guys I say Dirk at the top and Tony Kukoc on the bottom. Maybe a 6-11 Manu would be nice? I think we assume he will fill out and get bigger and more powerful but before that can he get stronger and quicker? Kid is only 20!

My point is If Ricky is Nash like (not MVP Caliber mind you), having a Gallo with Lebron might be pretty strong and very youthier!

As a fan, I am rooting for Gallo to have an upside! Same for Chandler. Im not over valuing them, just "hopeful"!

Its all werid, and I'm not sure it would have work out for us much better..I mean there's no getting by the 6 mill buy out..but if that idiot trades his rights, it says there's a more reasonable buy out, so concivable he may still come thru next season.

Thing is if the Knicks are trading Hill and Nate or Chandler and Nate for Rubio....Knicks have to take back salary. Knicks don't wanna do that.

Another thing...why would they want Nate when they have Johnny Flyn???

I could see David Lee can't go to minnesota either cuz they have the Love Doctor over there along with Jefferson.

Situation is stupid...

anyway, Knicks could wait cuz regardless...Rubio is coming to the NBA to play under the rookie scale. Thats easy money to play with via trade. Why even study this anymore cuz right now it makes absolutely no sense.

Nice job Kahn. So you don't have your pick until at least 2011 and he can just re enter the draft, from everything I understand. If that was Donnie Walsh doing that, over here, he'd be fired so fast you couldn't blink.

no. if he plays professionally, including this spanish team he might sign with, minnesota holds on to his rights. if he takes a year off from any professional play he can re-enter the draft and minnesota loses his rights. minnesota will hold his rights if he signs this deal.

Report: Rubio Deal Not Done Yet

By: Jason Fleming Last Updated: 8/26/09 12:56 PM ET | 854 times read

Adjust font size:According to Marca.com (it's in Spanish, so you know before you click the link) Spanish point guard Ricky Rubio's contract with Joventut has been sold to Regal Barcelona for $5.3 million. As part of the deal Rubio will sign a six-year contract with Regal Barcelona. This new deal will not have an affordable buyout until after the 2011, which looks to be the earliest he will don a NBA uniform.

Rubio was the fifth overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves.

ESPN.com is reporting that a deal is not done yet:

The Spanish newspaper Marca said Regal FC Barcelona had agreed to pay Rubio's former team, DKV Joventut, 3.7 million Euros ($5.28 million) for the rights to the 18-year-old playmaker who was taken by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the fifth pick of last June's NBA draft.

"Ricky Rubio hasn't signed anything. Joventut hasn't accepted anything. It's not over yet," said the source, who was briefed early Wednesday on the ever-changing landscape of the protracted, trans-Atlantic Rubio saga.

Rubio's current contract with Joventut includes a 5.7 million Euro ($8.133 million) buyout clause for both this summer and next summer. The buyout drops to zero in the summer of 2011, and Timberwolves general manager David Kahn, who has traveled to Spain this summer to negotiate with Joventut officials, has said the club is willing to wait until then for Rubio to come to the NBA.

"Based on the information I have attained today, no team in any league has reached a deal with DKV Joventut concerning Ricky's buyout, which must be accomplished before Ricky is released from his contract with DKV Joventut," Kahn said in a statement released by the Wolves early Wednesday afternoon.

How me include Manu? Cuz the rooster got potential!!!! Maybe he turns into the "mad rooster!"

Lee and Love are different players altogether. They can co exist on the floor at the same time. A rotation of Lee-Jefferson-Love is formitable. THey are different and can either match up well with whats being thrown out to them or create problems.

You put Love at the 3 and it would be tough to stop him. Naturally your giving up lateral quickness on defense, but with jefferson you have some back up. Lee is quick enough to shift over. Its doable, thats all.

Nate if off the bench microwave.

Shoot, it ain't gonna happen but if it does than you can say Uncle Nalod said it. IM just looking at what Kahn can sell to the fans.

if Kahn doesn't work out a trade w/the Knicks or some other NBA team he should definitely be fired.

Im not so sure this is all on his head. Taylor the owner is very involved and I can't imagine this was done without his knowlege. Ricky is 18 and I while I would like him we have to understand he is not prime time ready for the rigors of the NBA. FLyn is a 4 year player and 22 or 23 so he is ready to go.

THey traded miller and Foye and basically got to dump salary for blount and Ricky Rights. Leaving him in Europe to season for two years is not done without the owners blessing or insistance. With a proactive owner and a rookie GM I doubt the Rookie is given the kind of clout to pull this.

If in Two years Rickey is a bust and it was at Kahns insistance you fire him if the team sucks. If Ricky sucks and the team is in the playoffs you write it off if flynn is a very good player. If both suck you gotta fire Kahn.

Incubating a player at no salary cost is not so stupid.

at #5 it's stupid. especially if you have a POS team that needs help now. you do that much later in the draft.
