FIU wants to open vs. Ohio State
By Dana O'Neil
ESPN.com

Florida International will pull out of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament unless tournament organizers allow FIU to open with Ohio State instead of North Carolina, as the Golden Panthers had expected.

FIU officials were equal parts incensed and stunned when they received an e-mailed press release of the Tar Heels' schedule, listing Florida International as the season opener. Athletic director Pete Garcia said the school had been approached by the Gazelle Group, the tourney organizers, about switching its opener from the Buckeyes to the defending national champions but refused.

"We knew nothing about this until the press release from North Carolina today," Garcia said. "We told them last week we would not change the game and had never agreed to this."

Gazelle Group president Rick Giles said that he has a contract, signed by Garcia, which stipulates that FIU would play either Ohio State or North Carolina, leaving the choice at the discretion of the Gazelle Group. He said that is the way his company has written contracts for 15 years and fully expects the school to honor its agreement.

"I would be stunned if Isiah Thomas' first act as a head coach was to break a contract," Giles said, although Thomas pointed out that the contract, signed in November 2008, was agreed upon before he arrived at FIU.

Florida International contends that though the original contract offered an either/or option, the school had agreed to open its season with Ohio State and had gone so far as to publicize that information. In an August AP report, new head coach Thomas is quoted about the opener with the Buckeyes.

"Big Ten country," he said. "If at some point and time you're going to be able to compete with the big boys, you might as well jump right into the fire and get started."

Thomas said he was completely caught off-guard by the switch.

"I had no idea," he said. "No one contacted me, our athletic director, no one. Maybe in 2010, 2011 we can play North Carolina, but not this year."

Steve Kirschner, North Carolina's associate athletic director for athletic communications, said: "We will play whoever they tell us to play.''

Kirschner said UNC contacted the Gazelle Group because there had been some discussion about the Tar Heels' opening opponent and questioned whether the schedule should read, "TBD.'' But the Gazelle Group told them to go ahead and release the opener as Florida International.

Garcia said if necessary the Golden Panthers would look for other teams to fill the hole in their schedule.

"We will not be bullied into a unilateral decision to play North Carolina after we already agreed to play Ohio State," Garcia said.

man, its going to be a long year for the F.I.U kids when this ESPN anti-Zeke agenda hits overdrive once the season begins. The scrutiny and cynicism will be oppressive and obnoxious.

How this story is Isiah's fault is beyond me. Guess they are just attempting to prepare for the season ahead and get their haterade in mid-season form.

It's not really that it's 'his fault' or anything so much as it's 'here we go again'.

When you get to a certain level of ineptitude, ineptitude becomes expected. And even seemingly minor mistakes will get blown up, or minor situations.

Yea, it will be a long yeaer for FIU, it will be a long era for as long as IT is there. This is exactly the reason why many of us said it was a bad signing.

This guy should just retire or lay low for, like, at least 5 years.

In fairness that's my slant more than ESPN's... there's an agreed upon contract between the school and the tournament. It's not like contracts get redone because there's a coaching change. He's up to more of his usual bullpoop to get the school's name in the media as well as throwing a hissy fit because his team has a better chance of winning versus OSU than North Carolina

Backing out of a tournament to raise awareness and money for cancer because you do not like the matchup you got is not a good way to start for someone with such a checkered past.

Again, guys, you need to read the article again. Where does the article suggest that this opposition to the schedule and pulling out of the tournament is Zeke's doing? It clearly states that FIU officials are incensed as well as the school as a whole. You cats are twisting the quote Giles made about Thomas for your own reasons.

ESPN knows what they're doing. They are trying to create a climate to rile up people who have an inherent bias against certain individuals. Its why there is constant heat on T.O and Zeke and little on Favre and Larry Brown.

Carolina loses 4 starters. Isiah is stupid!

He could splash by beating them or giving them a scare.

Instead he is scared cuz Carolina's famous alum, like mikey jordan and the juice card man himself, Larry brown will all conspire to embarass his sorry team.

FIU is lucky to be even relevent this early in the season!

Floridia is famous for the environment of con men and shysters in the state. He is perfect!

Personally he could drown in his own vomit in his sleep and I'd be sorry for his kids. Thats about it.

would this be news if it weren't thomas

It would be news if it were Larry Brown.

It would be news if any high profile NBA coaching/gm failure pulled this.

It would at least be NCAA news if ANY coach pulled that.

So, yeah, it's news regardless of Isiah. It's just magnified in New York because of his ties to the Knicks. It'd be the same in LA if it were Phil Jackson. The same in SA if it were POP.

So, nah, I don't see the idea that it's only news because it's Isiah and the NY media.

Seb: I actually agree with many here that this is news for a reason. Isiah is a high profile guy that had a high profile exit. When you are high profile people will watch everything you do. Don't forget when Larry Brown left here, we heard every "next move" he was going to make. Because it was a story that people are interested in. Not because of some inherent bias. Isiah earned the criticism he got and was in no way treated unfairly here.

Now as for Isiah in FIU. I think he should play Carolina but I understand why he's raising a stink. Isiah is standing up for a little University and sending the message that "we will not be pushed around". As a person that has built a program before I understand and respect that mentality. Add to this that Isiah has some commitments from some big name recruits that FIU would never have gotten before he got there and I'd have to say that so far the man has done a pretty good job. Let's just hope (or hope against, if you are a hater) that it's all on the up and up.
I just hope that people will like me
