From recent Chad Ford article:

1. David Lee, Knicks (RFA)
Teams interested: Knicks, Blazers, Thunder
Salary range: $8-10 million per year

Lee is a double-double machine who has become a favorite among New York fans and coaches around the league. The Knicks have a goal of clearing cap space for 2010, meaning they might not be in a position to match a substantial offer sheet. So Lee is the rare top-notch restricted free agent whom an opposing team might be able to steal away. At least in theory. The Grizzlies flirted with making him an offer but then backed away. The Blazers tried to work out a sign-and-trade with the Knicks, but couldn't get New York to cooperate.

if not cooperating means taking junk contracts and players back so Lee can get paid then fine.. we shouldnt be cooperating.

Knicks are also not cooperating in signing DLee to a $10M+ per contract for 5-6 years. Life sucks.

This is old news. The Blazers wanted to talk sign-n-trade but didn't want to give up value. Reportedly the Knicks wanted to start the conversation with Rudy Fernandez and the Blazers cut the talks. Of course, if they want NY to trade him and not get value back, they won't cooperate.

Well, I can only speak for myself, but I'm certainly willing to cooperate.

What junk contract does Portland have to give back? They don't have any junk contracts.

Also they might not be offering anything. Lee would presumably be signed for close to 10mill, outside of Martell Webster, who I don't want, the Blazers don't have a whole lot of guys to make that deal work.

The chances of a sign and trade with Portland went out the window when they used their capspace for Andre Miller.

From 1050 ESPN:
Lee's agent: We've had deals but Knicks say no

August 10, 2009, 11:34 AM

The agent for David Lee tells me that there have been sign-and-trade opportunities that have worked for Lee, but the Knicks haven't liked the deals. Mark Bartlestein, Lee's agent, says Lee's first choice is still the Knicks. Bartlestein is still exploring sign and trade possibilities as well and has no timetable on a resolution.

From the start, Bartlestein has repeatedely told me that the sign-and-trade business is complicated so it could take a long time. I ended our conversation today by telling Mark that we will be talking about this in December.

Obviously, it will get done before then, but the Yankees might have the AL East wrapped before Lee has his name on a contract.

I wonder what the particulars were supposed to be in that S&T... I still think the Blazers are our best bet for a S&T. They want him - he's exactly what they need backing up Oden and Aldridge - and you would think we should have a chance to bring back a good young player like Bayless or Rudy Fernandez in return. I bet this is where they are right now with this: Donnie's probably being gunshy because Portland's insisting we take back Joel Przbilla (who's owed $7.45 mil. in 2010/2011 - so no way Pritchard) OR I betcha the Blazers are only willing to offer a combo. of 2 of these 3 - Blake, Webster, Outlaw. No Bayless or Fernandez. If Donnie even entertains taking back a sub-standard package like Blake/Outlaw (which isn't terrible but we'd then have to renegotiate Outlaw, he becomes a FA after this season - I don't think we'd then be able to offer LeBron the max. if we did so. Plus Outlaw would become obsolete with 'Bron now in the mix anyway) we gotta grab their 2010 1st rounder I would think no? You wanna hold onto Bayless or Fernandez Pritchard? Fine. Cough up your 1st rounder next year then. Blake & Outlaw + their 2010 1st round pick (which will probably wind up going in the mid-late 20s) for David Lee. I think that's fair. Pritchard would probably prefer we take back Webster instead of Outlaw, but Webster's semi-longterm deal impacts our 2010 FA plan too much.

How are you going to matchup the money? Most of those guys are making under 4 million and I don't want Webster and his 3 years.

any expirings plus a 1st rounder in 2010 is better than getting back nothing at all.

It all depends on fair value. Holding a player up by offering less $ than another team is how the Clippers operate. If there is a fair value deal and we are holding locks on Lee because we want him for one year isnt fair to the player nor is it good business for the team. If we dont pay him what other teams are willing means we don't value him as much. If we don't value him as much we should TRY to facilitate a trade where the team who wants him--would be willing send the Knicks fair compensation

That's the point, Briggs, fair compensation. We still don't know the type of deals Lee's agent had gotten. The article says they favor Lee, but there is a reason the Knicks have barked. We know the Blazers were an option, but what exactly did they offer? Outlaw and Blake was real? Is Rudy Fer really too much for Lee, if they want him so much?

You already knew that Donnie "Sleepy" Walsh was sitting on a Lee sign and trade deal?

I wonder what the Blazers really think of Jerryd Bayless. They act like he's an untouchable yet they go out and get Andre Miller and they still have Blake who they like, a guy they appear comfortable giving a lot of mins. to. Are they going to play Bayless meaningful mins. this year or are they content to give those mins. to Blake backing up Miller? I know Nate McMillian didn't really care for Sergio Rodriguez - I wonder if he doesn't like Bayless as well...
