Jason Williams Will Meet With Grizzlies

Point guard Jason Williams, who is trying to return to the NBA after a self-imposed, one-year retirement, will be in Memphis this weekend for a meeting and a workout with the Grizzlies.

Williams, 33, is expected to formally clear waivers Thursday, making him an unrestricted free agent and available to any team in the league. The Clippers, who had signed him to a contract a year ago before he retired, waived their exclusive right to him last week.

The Knicks also have shown interest in Williams, according to NBA sources. Williams, who last played for the Miami Heat (2005-2008), has been working out in Orlando, where he makes his off-season home.

Williams was the starting point guard for the Heat when they won the 2006 NBA title.

Williams spent four seasons (2001-05) in Memphis, the last two when the Grizzlies reached the playoffs. His first season there may have been the best season of his 10-year NBA career when he averaged 14.8 points and 8 assists.

Williams signed his last NBA contract in August with the Clippers, only to change his mind, citing family reasons, and put himself on the league's voluntary retirement list. He forfeited his contract.

He asked for reinstatement last February, hoping to hook on with a contender, but failed to get the unanimous approval of all 30 teams that it would take to bypass the one-year requirement after retiring. Williams now will be eligible to play again on the one-year anniversary of his original retirement date, which was Sept. 26.

Williams averaged 11.4 points and 6.3 assists in his career, appearing in 53 playoff games. He came into the league with Sacramento and was named to the All-Rookie team in 1999, becoming one of the most popular players in the league because of his flashy style of play. Through the years, he toned down that style dramatically, particularly in Miami when he helped the Heat win a championship.

Duhon almost died last year because he was overworked. We need to find a PG to take some of those minutes away. Not knowing whether Douglas is ready it makes sense for us to do our due diligence and talk to a variety of different PG's. Now if they happen to find someone better then CD guess what, we just raised our talent level. If CD is your back up then you have a pretty solid PG rotation. If you find a vet that can play 15 minutes a game and give CD a rest it's good as well.

It all depends on the why and what kind of shape he's in. He's always struck me as a guy that loves to play, and through his career he made adjustments to become more substance and less style.

If he's in shape and wants to play 33 isnt that old. The year off could be a positive. I dont know... *IF* he's in shape a 2 year deal with the 2nd year being a TO would have some appeal to me.

It means our shooting guards are going to be 5'7 and 6'2 with Nate/Douglas I guess...

What are we doing here. Trying to find a crippled veteran to limp around the court? Hoping we can force Douglas to ride the pine?

We are chock full of backup players why are we trying to sign more backup players? We don't need them. We're a full roster as it is on a team that plays 8 guys any given night. What the HELL is Jason Williams going to do here other than act like the fool he is and stink it up because his body is done?

What the hell are we doing here talking to these clowns. Iverson. Sessions. Williams. What's going on?

Why not wait until after we sign an old beat up PG before you get outraged about it. I personally don't want Williams or Tinsley on this team. I"m with you. I want no more crippled vets trying to catch lightning in a bottle here in NY. Been there done that. I also understand that we need a talent upgrade and that our GM is doing his due diligence in talking to all these guys. First we had a problem with him "sleeping". Now we have a problem with him talking to everyone under the sun. I actually don't have a problem with this. I'm okay with him interviewing these guys and getting a feel for where they are and then presenting different opportunities to Mike to help him improve the team. If Mike feels that Tinsley or Jason can improve the team, I will 100% disagree with him, but the play on the court is the only determinant of who is right or wrong.

I won't wait because the mere thought of signing a washed up player let alone a malcontent so Toney Douglas can warm the bench makes me furious.

I am already furious because it's obvious with all these rumors flying that we will indeed sign some washed up moron to teach our kids what it's like to suck.

We're talking about known malcontents that nobody seems to want. Why is that? We're not 1 veteran away from the playoffs. These idiots won't take us to the playoffs. What they will do, if they're not spending half the season in a suit due to injury, is corrupt our youth and take their minutes from them.

We want Iverson and JWill out there chucking at a 12% clip while Chandler and Douglas sit on the bench in street clothes? Really?

Yeah, I'm pissed off at that notion, damn right, and frustrated that ANY fan thinks any of that is a good idea and actually believes it will result in 10 more wins and the playoffs next year - just so we can laugh at Utah for getting a 16th pick.

Jeez...what are we talking about here? I forget because I'm pissed off at any notion of brining in some washed up wanna be hoodlums so a good kid with skills in Douglas can sit on the bench and watch them **** everything up while also learning how to be a moron in the NBA night life.

Yep, tremendous idea! Let's do it!

Let's sign Spree, Iverson, Sheed, JWill, Marcus Williams, Marbury, Francis, and then bench all our kids. Yep, that'll take us to the playoffs. No doubt!

Chandler, Gallo, Douglas, and Hill are sure to learn how to be good players with those guys here! Get it done, Donnie!

I heard Dennis Rodman and Isiah Rider are available! They're vets with invaluable experience! Sign them! We'll push that Utah pick down to 20 before you know it!

Does my retarded rant ring any bell in your head, Bip, as to why it's a HORRIBLE idea to sign Jason Williams or the other garbage men listed on this forum as of late?

Cosmic: Don't let the media steer your emotions. Just because two guys talk does not mean they are in negotiations. We've spoken with about 75% of the available PG's this summer. We've spoken to PG's in Europe starting last year. We've spoken to everyone. To me this makes sense for a team that had a problem at the point and needs to raise their talent level. To me, it's just wise to do your due diligence. Instead of sitting on your arse, conduct some interviews and maybe you do find the right guy.

But until we sign Tinsley or JWill it's a waste of time to get upset about it. It's like getting mad and punching a friend because you thought he might punch you in the face.

Why even consider such players though? Why? What's wrong with Toney Douglas other than he's clean, smart, efficient, hard working, a leader, skilled, eager to learn, eager to be coached, and twice as good as his scouting report? WHY?

I know what you're saying, Bip, and maybe this is a GWB pre-emptive strike in the event we actually do sign one of these knuckleheads, but why even consider them? TO DO WHAT!?

Now answer me this, please, for my sanity which I am rapidly losing amidst the "LETS SIGN IVERSON" threads I'm reading on various Knick forums.

You're still rebuilding. 2009 is a known throw away year. You're not making the playoffs. No washed up veteran will help you make the playoffs. No backup castaway regardless of age will help you make the playoffs.

You just drafted a young kid full of fire, desire, skill, smarts, and already a big time leader on the court.

Why....why on earth are you looking at Ramon Sessions, Allen Iverson, Jason Williams, Marcus Williams, Jamaal Tinsley, etc? WHY!?!?!

To do WHAT!?

Teach Toney Douglas what it feels like to sit on a bench in street clothes? Teach him how to try to be a fake hoodlum, shoot guns, drink excessively, smoke weed, and suck on the court chucking up 45 footers while laughing about it because you're being paid millions to be a ****ing idiot?

WHY!?

WHO DOES THIS!

I thought Donnie Walsh was doing a nice job cleaning up Isiah's frat boy mess. Now he's considering bringing back in the same type of players he so quickly had to part ways with?

What the hell is going on here!

So, I ask you, given this teams situation as I laid it out, do you REALLY look to sign Sessions who SUCKS, or Iverson/Jwill, etc who are idiotic washed up malcontents, when you have a solid young prospect in Toney Douglas, all in a season where if you're LUCKY you win 35 games?

Would you?

I wouldn't. And even though we haven't I'm FURIOUS at the idea that we're actually considering it.
