What was yours?

My top contenders:

1967 red sox losing to the cardinals in the ws during their “impossible dream” season (hey I grew up in new England, what do you want from me?)

1987 celtics losing to the lakers in the finals. F’g magic and that ”junior junior skyhook.” And that was the year the celtics would have had len bias.

1994 knicks lose finals to rockets. Ouch. horrible. Just f’g horrible. I flew to houston for game 1. loss. I went to 1 home game that series. Loss. Ugh.

But my worst most painful sports moment ever – ali losing to holmes. I tore up a hotel mens room after that.

charles smith 4 missed layups. i was in the building, section 408 and it felt like a morgue walking out. i went to 20+ knicks home games that season, and that was the only loss i witnessed that season...

I was at Game 7 against the Pacers in 1995... that damned fingerroll looked good

The entire Knicks team getting suspended after that fight with Miami.
That would have been the year.

Charles Smith, Reggie Miller's 20+ point 4th Q outburst (complete with the choke sign at Spike), Game 6 against Houston,Reggie Miller's 8 pts in however many seconds, Ewing's missed finger roll, Giants playoff debacle against 49ers in 2002, blowing 4 games in row to the Sox.

Thanks for making me relive the horrors of my life. Time to go refill the flask.

1982 Jets AFC Championship loss to Miami- the year that the Dolphins kept the tarp off and let the field get rained on so Freeman McNeil would not be able to have his usual game.

The Knicks losing to LA in the 71-72 finals after they had crushed them in game 1. I seem to remember that Debusschere got hurt in game 2 and was not himself the rest of the series.

The Mets loss to Oakland in 1973, after being up 3-2.

The Charles Smith game and the 1994 series loss to Houston were also terrible.

I think Game 7 Yankees vs Red Sox in the 2004 AL Championship... Yanks were up 3-0 and drop 4 straight games... the Yanks lloked like they were defeatd in the 2nd inning and played like it for 7 more innings...

You know I gonna spin wit it

pretty much the same for me..... the firsttwo really hurt... if not for the gonzalez bloop the yanks win 4 WS in a row and 5 in 6 years... LOL. talk about dominant.. Heck, three in a row and 4out of 5 was great, but 4 in a row in this modern era? wow!!

I would also like to add the night Bernard king went up to block Reggie theus( I think that's who it was) layup, tore his knee and the future of the knicks changed...

That's pretty much the list... but I'll add Ewing's big toe being on the court, the Giants fighting on the sidelines in 1997, and (I know I'm the one of three that cares about hockey) Mark Messier leaving the Rangers after the 97 playoffs

For me... Even though the Yankees had won 4 titles, when Mariano gave up that stupid ****ing BS bloop to Luis Gonzalez to end the 2001 World Series.

When I see the replays, I still to this day think that ball is going in and feel pain when it doesn't. Miller's choke artist comments had me wanting to kill him at the time. The whole '99 finals. The Layden Era(Error), The Thomas Era(Error). Two Words, Fredrick Weis.

Here's my top 10.

10. Yankees 2008 -- Summer of HGH. Andy Pettite admits using.

9. Giants 2001 -- getting they asses beat 34-7 by the Ravens in the Super Bowl.

8. Knicks 1984 -- after knocking off the Pistons, lose game 7 at Boston Garden. I was six years old and cried a lot. Boston easily beats the Bucks then beats LA for the chip.

7. Knicks 1997 -- PJ Brown flipping Charlie Ward, the ensuing ejections.

6. Knicks 1985 -- at the peak of his career, the great Bernard King suffers devastating ACL injury misses remainder of season and entire next season. Despite averaging 22.7 points per game during his first six games back, the New York Knicks to release him at the end of the 1987 season. However, King would have a very successful comeback with the Washington Bullets, improving his scoring average each year with the squad and returning to the All-Star Game

5. Giants 1989 -- losing in sudden death to the LA Rams in the first round of the playoffs at home after going 12-4

4. Yankees 2004 -- Red Sox become the first team in major league history to win a series after being down 3 games to none.

3. Knicks 1993 -- The Charles Smith game. No other words can describe it.

2. Yankees 2001 -- lose game 7 in the 9th inning in Arizona

1. Knicks 1994 -- Starks missing all those threes, Riley not substituting in Ro Blackmon.

lol @ being BANNED by Martin since 11/07/10 (for asking if Mr. Earl had a point). Really, Martin? C'mon. This is the internet. I've seen much worse on this site. By Earl himself. Drop the hypocrisy.

I can't believe I forgot ... the Reggie Miller game and that whole series in 1995 has to be up there in the top 5 or 6.

Jets being up 10-0 over Denver and proceeding to fumble 6 times in Denver's territory - one by their 10 that was destined to put us up 17-0 and probably give us the game....and knowing we, like Denver did, would have steamrolled the FALCONS. (this was my edit, i keep calling the Falcons the Hawks these days. Yeah, I've killed a few brain cells I probably need.)

Starks flaming out and Riley just watching as our NBA Finals went down the drain.

That Miami fight in...97?

Ewing shattering his wrist (thanks Andrew Lang - and wtf we go and sign the loser later on!) and tearing his achillies...we still had a real good shot with Ewing then.

I mean, those are really the big ones to me. Smith getting murdered by Scottie/Michael without a call - eh, what can you do about that. Was that game 3 of the Starks THE DUNK series? I can't remember.

See, things like the Charles Smith bit - and the Ewing Fingerolls - and the Ewing tough fallaway, rims out, dudley's tip won't go, knicks lose --- eh, to me they're annoying at the time but now, that's just basketball.

The other events I feel were avoidable in some way - except Ewing getting hurt? I dunno, that was freak.

Good job guys. I was also pissed when Ewing got injured and was out for the season. That was the year that Ewing playing like the best center in the league. From Shaq to Hakeem no one was stopping Ewing.
