"greedy attention whore"
because there is absolutely no good reason why he should leave Clev for NY.

So if Walsh is unable to significantly increase the talent of this team between now and the summer 2010 I cannot imagine what good (basketball reason) he will have for leaving Clev in favor of NY. I really wish the issue of Clev being cheap and deciding to not pay Lebron was a factor but we all know that will not happen. Clev is a 50 win team that has the ability to make the NBA Finals.
So what's left if it isn't money or better basketball.

So basically if we get LeBron we should be mad because he's selfish.

Media spotlight, massive marketing potential, ability to establish his brand-identity in the biggest (post-basketball) market in the world and go global from there. Sure beats trying to launch his global brand from Cleveland, OH, dontcha think?

Trying to launch his global brand? Hasn't he already done that?

Cleveland is less than a 2 hour flight from NY. Business can actually be done in other parts of the country too now they got the telegraph Internet.

And there's something to be said about having friendly country where you can meditate on the next great idea... a retreat from when the media arrows are coming at you.

Less space, higher taxes, more scrutiny, and a fanbase that is an injury away from wanting nothing to do with you... that's also what we have to offer.

there is no doubt you can launch a global brand from anywhere in the world, but if you think it's as easy or has as much potential as in NYC, then you are delusional.

I'm not delusional. It could be a great leap forward for a number of players not named LeBron James... a Bosh or a Chris Paul or Carmelo Anthony or even Wade. Namedropped in hip-hop summer anthems, the whole city following your every move, on Letterman every other month. But we are talking about LeBron James here. He has the potential of being truly one of the greats who ever played the game. And that should be his focus: the game. All fame & fortune will follow his success in the team game of basketball. Bitty asks if there are basketball reasons to come here, the argument is strong that there aren't many, and won't be many for a man of his talents and success.

This ain't the 1960s anymore where dudes in suits on Madison Avenue rule the business world. Dowdy Scottish women are getting catapulted into superstardom via reality TV and YouTube. Sure LeBron stationed in NYC could be worth a few extra millions in his petty cash. I argue the potential pitfalls of being a New York-based athlete accompany those possible benefits. The world isn't completely flat, martin, but it's a hell of a lot different than even 10 years ago.

I am with Martin on this. There are too many die hard fans of the NY teams with disposable income to think that there will not be a positive impact on his income through marketing deals, shoe sales, jersey sales and simple publicity. NY is the world capital. You are delusional if you think there is no effect. Is Nate Robinson, a sixth man on the Knicks, the 10th highest selling jersey if he isn't in NY? I don't think it is likely.

If NY market is a big enough reason for players to come here why aren't more elite players demanding trades to NY? If market is truly that big of a factor then why haven't the Knicks been able to allure more bigger name players?

Launching a Global Brand has more to do with him as a player and his individual marketability versus the city he's playing in. NY has it's perks but not enough to completely change his money-making potential.

not saying i know the answer to this, but:

if derek jeter was part of a cleveland indians baseball dynasty, would his star shine as bright, brighter, or not as bright, as it does as a result of his contributions to the new york yankees 90's dynasty?

Everyone who is saying that I think it will have no effect is delusional themselves. I have never said that. I'm saying that in 2009, in the bigger picture, I'm not sure if it the effect is as great as other profess it is. The Cavs have Chinese backing right now. Why "go thru New York" when you can build a pipeline directly to a growth market?

And the point I'm really making is that the potential impact comes with risk. Right now the main risk is that the Knicks can't become a winner before LeBron is out of his prime.

Nate winning the slam dunk contest at his height is the reason why his jersey sells. If Nate did not win that slam dunk contest I doubt that he would be number 10 in sales. Nate has personality plus game. Nate also knows how to market himself. If it was just about playing in New York then Charlie Ward jerseys would have been selling through the roof.

Again if this is true then why aren't more elite players demanding trades here? Also how is playing in the World's capital working out for ARod? I'm not even a baseball fan but even I see how his personal life is splashed all over the papers.

Does anyone here honestly believe that if Lebron demanded more money from Nike that they wouldn't pay him?

New York jersey's are going to be in the top 10 because most folks love the name on the front, not the back. Lee's jersey is also in the top 10 too, and that's because to me he's the easiest to root for these last four years. I'll make an argument that it also helps that the last names "Robinson" and "Lee" rank as some of the most common surnames in the US.
